Under the right conditions, and with a little encouragement, Carp can be individually targetted and taken at the surface by employing the simplest of tackle rigs and cheapest of baits. Here Graeme Pullen gives a demonstration of freelining Carp from Zyg Gregoreks Anglers Paradise with nothing more complicated that a hook on the end of his line baited with either dog biscuits or bread.

Its all about selling tackle and other stuff .You are so right. But everyone likes to be in with the "crowd" and have matching stuff, which automatically makes me want to be different ! I don't want to be a sheep. Better to be an individual. Especially if you are enjoying your fishing as well. I sit in an old folding deckchair by my rods. Why would I want an overpriced low level thingy when all I'm doing is sitting. My son bought a camouflage bait bin recently. Why ? The fish will never see it !

I use this method every summer, freelining with a size 10 hook and 6lb line. I landed a 31lb Common, along with a 22 and a 24, just over a week ago, taken 4 feet from the bank with dog biscuits.

After living in Germany for 14 years, and paying for permits for day permits to fish between here and there, only where they told me to stay. I AM SO GLAD I'M BACK IN THE STATES WHERE THAT SHIT DON'T EXIST. i TOOK THE 6 MONTH LONG CLASSES AND SCHOOLING ON FISHING, HABITAT, AND ALL THAT AND I'M HAPPY I DID. That part I wwish they had here in the States to teach people important things about all species. But paying 20 germark marks to fish a lake and the control store for the area to fish.

I forwarded you query to Graeme and his comments are as follows..... Freelining works anywhere,but better on lakes as the bait stays in one place.If you baited a river it would be better to make sure the bait sinks and stays on the bottom,rather than use bread that will float away on the surface.Carp tend to take off the lake surface better than on a river.Still worth a try though.

Carp Anglers stalk and use these methods all the time, there is nothing new here, but for those who are not carp anglers this is a cool representation of surface fishing. It isn't water craft as some have said, its having the experience and knowledge that in hot weather Carp surface or look for shaded areas under Lillies or within Reeds, under trees anywhere where there is shade that cools the water, aswell as patrol the surface, its more knowledge of carp behaviour than water craft. In these conditions I have had 40+ Carp ranging all sizes within 3 hours off the surface, So water craft it isn't, as you can visibly see the fish on the surface in most cases, and if you don't see them on the surface, try and feed to see if they will rise up, especially round trees and shaded areas, as shown in the video. This is normal on all waters as its fundimental carp behaviour in hot weather. But if you want to catch Carp in all weathers other methods are required that are more complicated than this, and more water craft as some have called it comes into play which is experience based and learnt over time, which also requires more gear and are the methods taken up by most carp anglers. I share the view though that many are what I call tackle tarts, and concerntrate too much on new rigs and setups, I have tried all rig types for Carp and have gone back to a basic hair rig, so I can see it from both sides, but will argue there is nothing wrong with innovation within fishing, anything that boost enjoyment and floats your boat is fine with me. I started as a match angler from the age of 9, but once i experienced Carp angling there was no turning back and have done nothing but since my early 20's, and am now 46. People need to see this for what it is, a person willing to take time out to share what knowledge he has gained within something that he loves to do. No matter how experienced you are you will take something from everything no matter how small as people fish in there own unique way based round the fundimentals. Anything that informs others is a cool thing, you can just take the advice or leave it, its simple. I like your attitude regarding the size of fish even though we all like to catch the big guy, and is the main reason I carp fish, we should appreciate the fish whatever size. And I agree, I love the fact that you see the bait being taken the closer I am to the take the better, epsecially when your bait is half sat on a lilly and watch the carp part all the lillies to get to it. Great video, good advice for surface fishing in hot weather conditions, had to smile when you used the crust as the hook bait especially when you rotated it and re hooked it, been doing it that way for years. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to try and balance the comments you have had. Good fishing, and tight lines.

@hibs02 The rod is just an Avon Rod (Ryobi) about 1 1/4 lb test curve. The reel is a Shimano Aero match reel, shallow spool. As long as it takes 150yards of about 5lb line it should be all you need.
@colster71
@colster71 12 жыл бұрын
@bram9333 an avon rod is a rod of 11 or 12 feet long with a through action. It was designed for river fishing ( the river Avon ) and has both an ordinary top section and an interchangeable top section with quiver tips. The quiver tips are used for bomb or feeder fishing and the other is used for float fishing for chub etc or, in this case, carp fishing. The test curve is between 1lb and 1.75lb depending on the design.

Yes, hot weather is the right time to be trying floating baits, but early morning or better, late evening are the times to be about. Look for features,overhangs,weedbeds etc. The carp will want to be near cover/shade.

It's been quite some time since we were there. What I can say is that we caught them in maybe half a dozen different lakes, some of which certainly were amongst the closest to the main buildings, Sorry I can't be more specific but some of the lakes are sign posted as Carp waters, and if you throw some pieces of bread in off the opposite bank, if they're in surface feeding mood, they'll soon be up there sucking them in.

I only use an Avon rod,1 1/4lb test curve for the same reason.I hate over-heavy tackle.With 6 lb line and a small fixed spool reel I catch pretty much everything I want.That's up to 20lbs in the carp range,though I've never had a thirty on it.Should be fun though.

Shane Claire, years ago when we were learning about catching carp we used big hooks with barbs, fair enough I don't like barbed hooks do glad they are not used. We needed big hooks for using baits like par boiled potatoes. Carp don't get their mouths ripped out on soft Avon rods like poker stiff modern rods out now. I use same rods Graeme used and love them I've had carp to 24lbs no problem. And we unhooked carp on grass, and bet lots of those carp are still around. It's about trend now days.

I do believe that fish see color, they have very developed eyes and most animals with bright colors can see color. Also if they can't see color they lures with different colors would not matter which I know is false because some days they will only bite one color.

Couple of things, 1. Use a mat i dont care if your stalking or its on grass, use a mat! 2. Are you off your head, sorry if i miss hear you but a size 2 hook for carp give me a break, 3. That fish when it was in the bushes people like you are what damages there lips, you yanking it as hard as you can, you need to play it and slowly bring it out just dont give it line it right by your feet.

long grass can have hidden sticks and twigs that will damage a carp or any fish. This fool had a mat when he caught the first few fish then later does not use it !!! So I don't condone such practice and nor should you excuse this way of handling fish. I don't agree that unhooking mats are a new thing, been around for ages, so another excuse. If this guy is giving advice then it must be fish safe.
