Join us as we construct a simple yet functional milking shed for our beloved cow, Astrid, on our self-sufficient property in Western Australia. We'll take you through the process and have a look at how we've designed the shed to fit our (and Astrid's) needs. Plus, we popped in a segment featuring our fishing and 4WD trip to the beach, highlighting the beauty of living in this stunning part of the world.

Here is a love affair between a cow and a human... Completely understandable. When I was a kid 70 years ago, we always had a leg rope for the cow, mainly to keep her near side leg slightly back, and to stop her putting her hoof in the bucket and spoiling the milk or even tipping the bucket over. Later a similar system was used with the milking goat - not a leg rope tied to the leg as it was with the cow, but simply a rope tied across the bale behind the goat so she couldn't walk backwards - it went across the bale about top of udder height.

Nice. I have seen a rope around the leg to stop movement. It takes time for change. I really enjoyed watching .

Marvellous! The fact that you are a master of many engineering trades, animal husbandry, agriculture. That you can do some magic out of a few and rare resources that speak of your various skills. Your approach sometimes we Indians say "Jugad". Fantastic.

Great job. Astrid is going to love it, especially in foul weather and I'm pretty sure you will too.

I've dug a few post holes in hard soil. We filled them with water and let it soak in and then we made some progress.

Those dunes are fabulous. Great place to go fishing and just to enjoy the scenery from the dunes and on the beach. I visited there first back in the mid 70's. Even took my 2004 Outback up on top of the dunes years later but not to the beach as it would be still there today 🤣.

We trimmed it up like we did with Spanish Mackerel, and it was delicious. I don't wonder crafty kiwis have been enjoying kahawai, while us Aussies have been tossing them back!

I am at a bit of wonder regarding the milking technique in Australia. Here in the States, we milk on the cow's right side, whereas I see you folks milking on the cow's left side. We mount horses from their left side. Still, it gets the job done, it just looks strange from my experience!!!
@FreeRangeLiving
@FreeRangeLiving 3 ай бұрын
I milk from that side so my dominant hand (right) is the one dealing with the difficult rear teats. I'm not one to buck tradition, but there isn't really a preferred side here in Oz.

Love this channel. BUT as I have a hearing disability I could not understand what was being said because of the silly jangley music over the speech. I cannot separate music and speech so it is very difficult when creators do this. Music is ok if it is very low over speaking parts and fine anywhere no one is speaking. ATB regards from the UK

You just walked off with a skillet on the stove top with the fire on high. Not a nice way to end your career as a farmer.

Do you guys have a longer range plan or a trust fund? Soon the realities of your “hobby” farm will become obvious. Your KZfaq revenue will decline and none of your farming projects will be found to be sustainable in the long term as the cost of production far exceeds the ability to produce revenue, be it cows, pigs, chickens or goats. Your garden while beautiful is overly costly in terms of time required and resources. So what is your plan for the future? In advance, I apologize, I’m just an old economist of the dismal variety.

A trust fund? Thanks for discounting the possibility that we might invest for the future.
