Bionic limbs keep getting better. This prosthetic leg is a robot you can walk on - and it makes decisions so you don’t have to. Subscribe for more Superhuman episodes: freeth.ink/instant-sub-emergi...
Alec was a football coach who got hit by an out-of-control, speeding car while he was on the side of the road. Miraculously, he lived - and now he’s testing a bionic leg on the cutting edge of biotechnology. It uses AI (Artificial Intelligence) to help amputees walk naturally, in ways that are impossible with rigid prosthetics.
In this video, we went to Salt Lake City, Utah, and met Alec and the University of Utah’s Bionic Engineering Lab that is developing the device. It’s the latest episode of Freethink original series Superhuman, telling the stories from the front lines of medical innovation.
In this season, we’re focusing on amazing, inspiring advances in medical technology that are enabling paraplegic individuals to overcome paralysis or move in unprecedented ways. What do you think the future holds? Let us know in the comments and subscribe to Freethink for more incredible tech news and advances bringing us into the future.

Reminds me of the film Alita! So stoked that this isn't just science fiction, but an innovation that will help so many people in real life!

Absolutely fabulous the work that these folks are doing and the collaboration with Alec is just wondrous! As a military veteran, I see this as an opportunity to help so many with service-related injuries.

Seems more logical to do this then try to hook directly to the brain being that we don’t have a full understanding of it.

Time to put a camera and lidar under the knee joint to help the leg see and adapt before user's input.

Do you have to do a lot of PT or strength training to be able to walk on this leg?

I routinely lose my balance an fall because one of my legs, or both, suddenly goes limp at a random height off the ground which causes me to fall because my leg just suddenly isn't supporting me anymore. I sometimes wish I had my legs removed and replaced with prosthetics because at least then the balance issue would match up.
