While #France is still Europe's agricultural powerhouse, the number of #farmers is steadily falling, by almost 2 percent every year. Worse, an ageing workforce and a lack of new blood mean that around 15 percent of the current contingent is set to retire within the next five years, leaving many a homestead with no one to take over. But training schools have adapted to the times and are now prepping would-be farmers with a tasty combination of high-tech and old-school organic methods. We take a closer look and meet one young organic farmer.

This is becoming a worldwide problem. The family farms are being replaced by industrial farming which is purely economic. Time for Universal Basic Income for farmers. No one else deserves that. Where else can you work from sun up to sun down and not make a cent?

There needs to be an increase in tree crops, developing new varieties esp. to create weather resistant starchy crops.

The idea of farm 'abandonment' is misleading- the primary problem is decreasing farmgate prices as an effect of rising productivity per worker. Almost all of this increase however, is created by the introduction of capital intensive machinery/technology, so that there is no *actual* increase in net profit, only the same net profit spread over fewer operators/laborers. To add harm to injury, these new, highly capitalized farms- earning even less net profit per amount invested- become exceedingly difficult to transfer, except to those organizations large enough to be competing for the benefits of 'market share' (producer discounts, rebate schemes, lender relationships) rather than to remain individually owned and operated. This is the stage of Capitalism where it devours every intangible social and political good in the name of 'efficiency', returning only greater output and/or less cost to the individual consumer. The essential sickness observed in this process is our learned helplessness in accepting it as an inevitability- economic laws are *not* natural ones, and we have choices available to us- even in a predominantly capitalistic system.

Young blood is what is needed, as we need a totally different way to grow food to make the earth more sustainable, which currently, it isn't.
