My house sits on one of the oldest French home settlements on the Gulf Coast. The old place where my house sits was built around 1712 by an admiral that sailed on d'Iberville's second voyage to the Gulf Coast in 1700. I have just started metal detecting around the house and have found some cool artifacts including french handmade bricks from the big house that was destroyed by a hurricane in 1726. Lots of large iron plates and long nails. I am planning to rent a ground penetrating sonar machine in the winter when the mosquitos are gone to map out what else is around. The house across the street from me was built in the mid 1700's and the graveyard beside my house has a lot of graves in French from the 1700's and early 1800's. Love this history!

After studying all different realms of history through high school, college, and free time, my favorite arena by far is the colonial era, with New France undoubtedly taking the cake. Especially living in the Illinois-Wisconsin area all my life, it’s so fascinating being able to attach this incredible, frontiersman, unique piece of history to actual places that I’ve been in and lived near. I’ve always been incredibly interested by the couriers du bois, the fur traders, and the whole French diplomatic approach to interacting with and trading with Indians. It’s incredible to try and imagine Louis Jolliet or Jean Nicolet traveling down my region’s rivers in a canoe with a band of Frenchmen and Indians, being the first Europeans to ever lay eyes on this land. Great stuff, great video.

I know what you mean. I've lived in Montreal all of my 50 yrs and I'm into collecting antique maps of Montreal and surrounding areas. I live at the foot of Mount Royal too, so I have a lot of similar thoughts and feelings. Funny to here LaSalle pronounced as La-sol. I like this channel's style of recounting history.
@scygnius3 жыл бұрын
@@Mattypantaloons yeah caught me off guard too. As an American I’m used to hearing “a” in “Salle” to rhyme with the “a” in a Midwestern-accent “cat.” There’s even a town called LaSalle near where I live in Illinois.

To underline what you mention about french military tradition around the 8:00 mark, it's worth noticing that almost the entire military vocabulary is french in origin. Ranks: caporal, sergeant, leutenant, capitaine, major, colonel, général, marechal are all french. Different types of troops: cavallerie, infanterie, artillerie, all french. Troop contingents: peloton, compagnie, bataillon, division, armée, all french. I could go on, but you get the general idea as to how infuential France has been in the entire field of western military organisation.

Great comprehensive. Easy to get one’s mind around. But I think St. Louis,MO was not named after a French King named Louis. I believe it was named after the Catholic saint, St. Louis.

Yes, it was the slaughtering of French Protestants (Huguenots) by the Catholics. Not an ‘incident.’

You are Scottish and the way Edinburgh is so quiet says something about the atmosphere, is it the Grendel? Quiet has that library feel so the concentration is key to your mental health and the art you all had stopped making was cause your first paintings may have been laughed at and you took the Vatican to have It all to yourself make your own paintings and had been vain that you all began chopping heads off the Nazi was afraid of Hyndrek excuse my spelling but they must've had him killed once he began showing his murderous ability shooting Jews in the head without a problem going one at a time head shot that got blood on Gobbles face he was sickened.
