I like this ship, however, I think it's a mistake to place two quadruple turrets at the front like this. If a bomb or a shell explodes in this area, it may neutralize the main artillery. The turrets arrangement is better on the New Jersey class battleships, i think. Greetings from France

Yes she was very advanced. Even the Iowa could not reload without the main batteries coming to neutral position. One of my favorite battleships. I think she would have been a tough opponent for the Bismarck or Tirpitz.

Nevertheless, regarding what was authorized before the war, I'm not sure their choice was so bad. He was designed like an interceptor with an higher topspeed than direct opponents and an advanced submarine defense to go through escorts.

+Rowhider RC & Racing Except that the system desinged to load shells at whatever angle the guns were never worked properly, shelles kept being jammed at angles higher than 50 degrees... Same goes for secondarie batteries which were never satisfactory in their anti aircraft role because of their slowlyness in traverse and low rate of fire. The reloading system was too complex and often jammed it self or was being repaired. As for the security of the main batteries, their casemate were heavily armored and those quad turrets were in fact twin double turrets with an armor plate between each half to reduce probability of damage to both halves of the turret at the same time, the two turrets were quite far from each other too, farther than in Nelson class Battleships. The engineering section was the most technically advanced for turbine engines (not diesel), the ultra heat boilers could muster an tremendous power and allow the ship to go 30 kts with smaller boilers than in other BBs which made the Power/Mass ration excellent. The main down side of the ship was clearely its AA defenses in spite of advanced prototypes of semi automatic firing autocanons, firing about 200 rounds per minute; those types of 100 mm guns became standard for years on many ships in many nations, including Russia and USA (with improvements on detection and fire control such as radar) This ship had interesting ideas. It sure was the best compromise between an ordinary battleship and too extreme Nelson class battleships before the new era of US and Japanese modern fast battleships. Two things US engineers liked about Richelieu: the main guns fire control and the aircraft service facilities which were well designed. Fire control had to be good because twin double turrets set up caused a great dispersion in the half turrets salvoes that could go up to 1000 meters at maximum range ! The problem was due to the proximity of each barrel on a half turret from one another. The shell trails were interfeering with eachother and causing dispersion. The solution is quite simple and was implemented post war: delay the fire of the second half turret gun from 60 milliseconds to give time to the first trail to dissipate before firing the second gun, and dispersion was reduced by 50 percent !

Being a U-2, it wasn’t visible from the ground but they kept on pinging on French radar. The French demanded the US to stop but the US denied everything, it wasn’t until a French mirage iii managed to intercept a U-2 and take a picture of it using a civilian camera. (In fact, they nearly crashed). It also didn’t help that the US funded the Viet Congress during the indochina war and the various groups in North Africa that fought against the French (Americans did some pretty messed up stuff during the Cold War)

When you consider that Augusta will go on to command the US force at Operation Overlord and Sitka Force at Operation Dragoon, it worked out for the best given the circumstances despite Jean Bart doing her damndest to sink her outside Casablanca.

Richelieu was way more than just a cardinal. He was pretty much de facto ruler of France under Louis XIII, and strengthened french positions in the 30 years war. In addition he was also commander of the Siege of La Rochelle.

Her sister ship Jean Bart showed herself well getting bombarded by Massachusetts and Ranger despite having a limited ability to fight back at Casablanca. And her accuracy against Augusta two days later was nothing to disparage.

Complete bullshit. Richelieu fired numerous broadside when she operated with the Eastern fleet. Not a single one damaged her. If you're referring to that one incident in Dakar, it was solely because of a faulty hoist, nothing to do with the design itself. The gun layout was indeed slightly worst than a conventional one in a fleeing situation, but the firing angles of the guns would've been more than enough to be able to retaliate while keeping the distance. Don't forget that Richelieu was also the 2nd fastest battleship in history, cape le of steaming at 32 knots, which greatly help. Also, the all-forward layout is much better than a conventional one in case of a chase. The Richelieu class was All around an excellent treaty battleship design. You better get your facts straight before posting nonsense on the internet.

The Marine National stopped building dreadnaught hotels with these ships - they could out run anything they could not out gun and had ample fire power to destroy any smaller faster ships (Cruisers/Destroyers) in numbers . They were bad ass before Radar and AA added by USA which made them likely superior to Bismarck and equal to Tirpitz - both near if not virtually bling at night w/out moonlight as (meraculously) German radar sucked - and its own guns took out range finding from percusion of 1st salvo vs Hood. . RN didn't finish Vanguard until war near over which had old design 15" guns. So what would / could England had built for France? They could only put 14" guns in KGV class - granted 10 of them. French MN BB and BC were fast and BB's very well armored for treaty accelerated ship. They were designed to out duel Hipper Vlass HC and Pansa ships and Italian's 3 Roma class BB's. I think if Italions had US Radar and AA, and they didn't suck at manufacturing powder and shells - they had em all beat except Iowa's and Yamatos - but thats a big if. If Japanese steel didn't suck of course Yamato superior to Iowas..... Really the US radar and range finding was most critical - after dark its - USA owned the night.

What do you think the quadruple turrets were for? In fact, it is never mentionned anywhere in John Jordan's "French Battleships 1922-1956" (which is THE biggest reference in the matter) or even in the Navweap page for the french 380mm gun that these turrets were only capable of firing 2 guns at a time. During the period of the monarchy the flag was first repeating gold fleur-de-lis on a blue background, and later on a white. White, you see, is the color of purity and royal authority in the flag-language of the time. This got thrown out during the Revolution, but when the Bourbon monarchs came back, they dispensed with the fleur-de-lis and just had a pure white flag for maximum royal authority.
