We lived in Spanaway one summer when my husband was stationed at Ft. Lewis. We loved that beautiful lake. We also had a neighborhood Ridgeback when we moved to our forever home. The little poem for window box is filler, spiller, thriller. You definitely have the spiller and the thriller. I like to add garden architecture pieces too such as a bird house or small metal obelisk, especially with my fall and winter window box decorations. Have fun 😊

Yes, Silver Falls Dichondra is lovely!... Wire vine is another soft looking, unique spiller. SO many beautiful options...depending on your shade/sun conditions. One thing I always add to my pots and ground soil during my planting process, is a time released granular fertilizer. Then water in with a water soluable fertilizer right away, and every week or two thereafter. And my plants love it... You have a beautiful creative eye Sarah...thank you for all your lovely channel content! 💗 I learn so much from you!

My fern on my porch does really well because it only gets a little sun and then mostly shade . The other thing that makes it grow well ….it is misted every morning… Pull the fern leaves up and mist the back side too. Mine is double the size when I bought it in April .

That turned out so nice! I'm sorry the foundation turned out to need so much work! As for ferns in containers, they like more water than most things. I've never over-watered one, but I have definitely underwatered them. If you still have your Silver Moon Hyacinth Bean Vine Seeds, you might try planting 2 seeds at the base of each tuteur. There might still be enough time this summer for some pretty things to happen with those.

We've been in the throws of a major home repair for four months. There's not a room in our house that hasn't been impacted by the work that had to be done to correct damage from a hidden water leak. It's been a much larger repair than we initially thought and much more expensive. Another difficulty has been finding trustworthy labor after having lived close to many friends in the trades for decades, and we're now at the mercy of strangers running companies who have more work than they care to take on. There's so much new construction here in the panhandle of Florida that most companies don't want to fool with renovations of existing older homes. If they do agree to take on the work, they're charging outrageous prices. I miss being close to family and friends I trust and who would joyfully help us through this.

The side porch and gardening is beautiful Sarah. Nala is adorable, she's a little stinker. ☺️ I've had several ferns in hanging baskets over the years and just give them a little water every so often. This year I added one to the front of the house and set it in garden tricycle that has a wagon type box on the back. It turned out adorable as the fronds lay over the tricycle and wagon. Hi Sarah, your porch is cute as always! I have to say, as someone who has gardened in the PCN for nearly 40 years, I actually cringed when you transplanted your hydrangeas in the heat of summer, ooooh girl, I hope they make it!!! Hahaha! Keep them well watered. I hope you are not offended by me saying I wouldn't recommend doing that. The times to transplant are early spring and fall because of the stress on the roots; well you probably know all about it. Shrubs of that size are so darn expensive if you have to replace them, believe me, I've been there! I love how well your puppy gets along with your older dog. It's just adorable. oxJulia

It is a nice place for you to be outside, while things are a mess on the front porch! I think it looks beautiful❣️ I put out lemon thyme last summer and it makes a great edging in a landscape. I got a puppy the Monday before Thanksgiving, 2023. Lucy is her name. A lot of work, but I love her.🥰

Puppy love is real! Your kitchen porch looks cozy and welcoming. I do enjoy white geraniums with ferns. Such a pretty combination. I'll often buy small plants and my yard becomes a plant nursery. It's fun to move plants around the yard as they mature. You are so clever to make your own pillow covers!

Hi Sarah! You are so smart to create a haven away from the reno chaos. Your porch looks lovely. I live not far from you in Portland and have been gardening here for 25 years. I have two plant boxes on my front porch railing. I love to play with something different every year. This year I bought 2 autumn ferns for each box, used some hosta from my garden that needed to be divided and then layered in some impatiens and begonias. Everything is so expensive in the garden stores so I needed a new strategy. I will plant the autumn ferns in my woodland garden space in the fall. Last year I used Maidenhair fern in the boxes and this year they are happily thriving in the garden. Think perennial ferns. We are lucky in the PNW to have many perennial ferns. Thanks for all your design advice over the years. I am happy to give you some gardening advice. Be Well!!!

Hi Sarah, I like my Tassel and Autumn ferns. They are planted on the north side flower bed and love it there. I’ve bought them so I have greens with my cut flowers. You might want to take that little pot of paint to the paint store while it’s got fresh paint in it so they can color match it. Good luck with the Reno, it will be worth it!

Well, doncha know I ran right out and bought those blue star creepers!!! Thanks for the idea Sarah! I plan to use them in the little front plot of soil, where the sun shines all day, after 11 am! I still LOVE that green paint on the inside of your porch cabinet. I forget the name.. Everything pulled together nicely, and yes please to anyone who has tips for growing ferns! I also bought two at the beginning of Summer, love them but have no idea how to care for them over time. ❤😊 (love the hazmat suits-- so funny!!)

There are actually ferns that are sun tolerant. That is what I get. They are very hardy and grow quite full and lovely. If you miss a day or two of watering they will survive. Usually I water them every day and fertilize with Miracle Grow every other week. I have found them at our local Walmart but originally bought them at a local nursery. The were orginally about $30 but Walmart carries them now for $20. They are worth the investment to me. They go fast in the spring. May be too late in the season now, but next year…..Go in late April to check. Everything looks lovely Sarah!

So many good take-aways from this video Sarah! Making the best of a season of chaos and disruptions ... and dirt! A beautiful oasis in the middle of a construction project is a grand idea! My ferns thrive on Fertilome All Purpose Water Soluble Plant Food 20-20-20 - they have all doubled, if not tripled in size this season! They are super happy! Ferns seem to do best if there is a drainage hole on your pot or container - they like to be watered until the water runs out - every other day in heat of summer - less often when the temps are cooler. They do not do well if they get waterlogged. You might have gotten away with one fern per container since they really will fill out quickly and they don't do as well when crowded. My current favorite fern is Miss Fluffy Ruffles - oh my she's pretty! All of my ferns are happiest with indirect light - about 6 hours a day is plenty. I hope yours truly thrive - they are so so pretty!

Loved this project of the kitchen side porch. I finally went with black for most of my garden boxes, trim, and etc. as white is so hard to keep white here in PNW. ( Whidbey Island) The mold and algae keep it from ever looking a clean white. I live in the woods and just go dig up any ferns I need, there are different types to choose from. Same with moss, although I usually let it sit out for a day and inspect for baby slugs etc. not wanting to sabotage myself by giving the slugs a ready made smorgasboard! lol! i am planning to have that same type of self watering windowbox too, very time saving idea. Enjoy all you do.

I have one large Boston fern in an antique wagon. Not where I would usually have one but trying to save the wagon from toddler grandchildren getting in it and pulling the sides off 😆 So far it has worked! It only gets morning sun and spends the rest of the day in dappled sun and shade. I keep the soil moist but not wet. It is on the east side of my house. Michigan zone 5b.

You made great plant choices! Main suggestion for ferns is don’t over water them! Check the soil and if it’s moist, you don’t need to water….but don’t let them get too dry either - it’s a bit of a dance but over time, you’ll get a feel for how often they need watering. Other loves of mine are Delphiniums, snap dragons, salvia and daylilies. Dahlias are super easy to grow from seed and so many varieties! Love your summer porch - everything looks beautiful!

The porch looks great. Your hydrangea may need some time released fertilizer Osmocote is great! Snip the leggy one back. Cosmos get pretty tall.

Asparagus ferns in the window box will thrive. I give them a trim and pot them & bring inside for greenery in the winter - then back outside after the last frost in the spring. I cut them in half and have several now.

I love ferns and have them in many places in my gardens: at the base of my clematis trellis, under my maple trees, in the shade garden between us and out neighbors, and in my hydrangea garden. Check to see if yours are hardy in your zone. If so, they can winter over for you and will spread.🦋🦋🦋

You said it is ok to buy smaller plants as they will grow. I agree. I plant a lot of pots each summer with annuals. The plants starts small, so I think of it as planting a promise of color and beauty. And the promise comes to fruition in just a few weeks.

Tip about dogs and plants....my dogs are attracted to certain plant amendments like bone meal and fish fertilizer. Makes sense of course! But when I use those types of products, I am very careful to make sure my dogs can't get to the area 😊.

Sarah, The white cosmos look darling in the widow boxes now while they are small but unfortunately they will grow up to 3 feet tall and bush out considerably in the later summer months making them less ideal for window boxes. I suggest using low growing annuals in window boxes. Annuals like petunias will produce a show all season long. A particular favorite of mine is white petunias. They will thrive in sunny windows and will spill over the edges of your window box if planted densely.

Hi Sarah! Love your channel. I’m not an expert, but it looks like your hydrangeas are suffering from chlorosis (light leaf with dark green veins). It’s treatable with liquid iron. I’m not sure but thought I’d comment. ❤
