According to Ian McDonald's Revolution in the Head, the track may have been varispeeded, meaning that Civil played it in a slightly lower key. But it's still high, no doubt.

Thank you. We attend the Mountain West Basketball tournament every year in Las Vegas, and this year (last week) we noticed that the Fresno State Pep Band employed a French Horn. We started looking at every band's brass section and they were the only ones utilizing one. I don't know what pieces they play that would need one, but we immediately started thinking of French horns used in pop songs. Two immediately came to mind: The opening of "Didn't I Blow Your Mind" by the Delfonics, and Roger Whittaker's beautiful song "Last Farewell", where it is prominently used. Sam Cooke's "Cupid" uses it extensively also. A beautiful instrument it is, and as I've stated elsewhere, it's akin to the caviar spoon of a table setting. One to be appreciated by the most experienced and discerning of palates. :)

Marvelous. I like this warm sound of the horn, and that was really good played on this difficult instrument. I salute you for it. One more songs with the horn is Wonderful Land from Mike Oldfield. The original from The Shadows has a horn too, but it's more in the backround. And maybe, I'm not sure, Shine Silently from Nils Lofgren. What I like "Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Plays Prince - Diamond And Pearls". The Horns stands more in the foreground than in other "classical" pop covers. As we say in Germany "They are bearing elements". :-)

Hi Marc! Love your videos- I've been watching them since I started horn! :) Would you consider Frank Sinatra's music jazz or pop? If pop, then we could add some Vince DeRosa songs to your list of horn solos in pop songs! Also I think I saw a horn player playing on a Lone Bellow live performance video, but I'll comment with the link if I can find it!

Very nice! How often/long do you recommend to practice per week? Every day for a short time or longer sessions but not so often? I wanna build up such a nice high register aswell! Very good job :D
@Marc_Papeghin
@Marc_Papeghin 5 жыл бұрын
Mmmh, truth is I couldn't give you a true answer for that cause I haven't really "practiced" in years ^^ I do play a LOT though ! I developped my high range by playing stuff that wasn't written for the horn ( like violin, piano concertos, guitar solos etc ) When you try and play stuff that isn't part of the horn repertoire, you get out of your comfort zone and your technique will have to evolve in order to play those new pieces ! At least that's how it worked for me ;)
@SensesTaker
@SensesTaker 4 жыл бұрын
@@Marc_Papeghin I learned so many new techniques when I rewrote duets for horn and trombone. Trying to match the sounds was incredibly hard, but we practiced so much, I ended up sounding more like a trombone and he sounded more like the french horn, haha. My high range was not as powerful as yours sounds. I'm impressed!
