I understand why Spanish for some states but Maine would make a lot of sense for French

They did it in Ma. too. My grandfather was born in 1900. He spoke French at home, church, and school. My father was born in 1925. He only spoke French at home. There was a lot of shame and mockery of Quebec French speakers. I was born in 1960 and was not taught French. My grandfather died when I was 5. But I have memories of him talking funny to neighbors. There are French names all over Ma. But few speak it anymore. I started learning 4 years ago. It's hard in your 50s to learn. But I am very close to being fluent now. I can read it with ease. I live near Louisiana and enjoy talking to Cajun French speakers from time to time.

French is the international language of diplomacy, etc. If the French had won the French and Indian War, most of North America would be speaking French instead of English.

In Main it would make sense to teach French in schools. There were many French speakers in Main before Main joined to become part of the United States, in 1820. With Quebec and New Brunswick bordering the state of Main, it should be French and not Spanish as a second language.

I'm so grateful that my parents only speak to my siblings and me in Spanish.

So many americans have a french last name, their grand-fathers were Quebecers, and now they don't know a single word of french. It' s sad.

I've always thought it was so silly making Spanish the most common secondary language to learn here in New England. In the southwest of course it makes sense, but here we're right by Quebec and New Brunswick! Makes so much more sense to me to teach Quebecois French

Je suis un Americain de la Florida qui parle plusieurs langues. J'ai entendu l'Espagnol toute ma vie, aussi bien que l'Anglais. Le Français est ma langue favorie. Bravo les gens qui continuent de parler et enseigner Français!

I moved to Quebec from Ontario in 2017, and my biggest priority is learning French. I’ve grown quite fond of it.

My French husband & I raised our kid bilingual. There are so many advantages to doing so, it really helps kids feel confident in their studies from early grades through college! So worth it!

They keep cutting language programs, but when you look for a job, oftentimes they need people, who are bilingual. WTF is wrong with this country?

I am a Cajun from the French speaking part of Louisiana. We went through the same situation in Louisiana in the 1950's. There is an organization in Southern Louisiana called Codifil that has been working for many years to preserve the French culture and language. Uphill battle I am sure. I learned the French language from Parents. There are probably very few parents doing that now. I live in another state now and do not get to speak French anymore. I did go to France a few years ago, and was able to use my Cajun French to converse with the natives.

Triste de voir ce fait. Tout ces noms francophones que l’on peut voir sur les boîtes aux lettres le long des routes du Maine. Combien parlent encore français?

Ridiculous, the requirements for teaching English overseas are very low. I have been teaching in South Korea for 7 years now. If course teaching French in Maine would be very different but not at all impossible. They are right on the border with Quebec, they could easily get lots of teachers from right over the border and there would be a rush for it. French Canadians would say, "oui" in an instant. Work out a deal with Quebec and watch them become inundated with teachers in a month, no kidding.
