Actually it makes sense. The Louisiana Creole's writing is newer than the French one. The French one kept ancient prononciations in its spelling.

In french we kept ancient words and letters from latin so it makes sense

@@TunahTak That's not from haïtian, louisiana french creole appears by itself, entirely in an independant way from haïtian one. And sure @goxdie000 , it's similar to spanish nosotros cause it come from french "nous-autres", which does have the same latin root as the spanish word.

Nous autres/ nouzòt was very common in old French and also in Occitan (nosautres). Nothing to do with Spanish

Many people don’t realize Cajuns are white Louisiana Creoles. All Cajuns are Creoles, but all Creoles are not Cajun. That’s what my grandfather used to say.

@@IslenoGutierrez if more people understood the words available to them, I think more people would 'identify' as creole. I know it's probably not a standard use you see frequently, but creole sits as a shade of citizen in between native & immigrant in my head. I have a conlang where the word for "citizen" is actually sliced up in those three ways to mirror this.

@@EchoLog There’s a true story I like about two politicians running for office in old New Orleans. Both were white. One was an immigrant from France and the other was born and raised in New Orleans. The local man ran on the fact that his opponent was an immigrant while he was a Creole. That won him the position. In this context we can see Creole solely means someone local, native-born to Louisiana (in this case New Orleans). Today, so many people have so many things they think Creole is and if you ask 1000 people you’d probably get 1000 different answers. If only it could be as simple as it once was.

It’s the same definition that was in old Latin America before Spaniards attached it mostly to Spaniards born in Latin America. However, when Louisiana became a US state, incoming Americans rejected the créole identity and after that it began to be associated with colonial Louisiana descendants of the U.S. state of Louisiana, especially Francophones since this demographic was the largest colonial Louisiana descendant population in the state. The common misinformation spread today that creoles are mixed race people with black African ancestry is 100% wrong and has its own story how this lie became widespread. However, in the New Orleans area, creoles can still be any non-indigenous natives, especially those of colonial Louisiana descent and especially those of French and Spanish backgrounds. There is still a social club society for white Creoles in the New Orleans area called “The Society of the Founders of the City of New Orleans” that holds balls, meetings, social club events, voting for board members etc. The New Orleans area still holds on to the true meaning of Creole. Also, there are a good number of folks in northern Acadiana (Avoyelles, St. Landry, Pointe Coupée and Evangeline) that still hold on to the Creole identity. Most of these folks are of French and Québécois ancestry that arrived to Louisiana long before the Acadians arrived.

Louisiana Creole (kouri-vini) is on its deathbed, it’s moribund. Same thing with Isleño Spanish (the only surviving Spaniard colonial spanish dialect in Louisiana), it’s also moribund. Louisiana French on the other hand is on life support and has a chance at survival as it has many more speakers than Louisiana Creole and Louisiana Isleño Spanish combined and bigger and more efforts are being made to retain it.

Well because besides blacks people, there are also mixed race people and white people that speak Louisiana Creole (Kouri-vini), so just like Louisiana French it’s not spoken solely by one race.

Secondly, Louisiana Creole is not mostly made up of African languages, it’s mostly French with some African hybridization and non-standard phonetic spelling. It’s also a language that was and is used not only by black Louisianians, but also mixed race and white Louisianians as well. It’s origins are a mixture of French and various African languages with several borrowed words from Spanish and Native American languages. It’s more french than anything. Any Louisiana French speaker can understand Louisiana Creole because of that reason.
