Over 200 opponents of France's National Rally (RN) party on Tuesday withdrew as candidates from next Sunday's second round of voting as they seek a so-called "republican front" against the far-right.
President Emmanuel Macron's centrists and the broad New Popular Front left-wing grouping hope to stop the far-right from taking power in the lower house of parliament after it won roughly 33 percent of the vote at the first round last Sunday.
The tactical withdrawals are intended to avoid splitting the vote against Le Pen's party. It's a tactic that has been employed repeatedly against the far-right in France in the past, most frequently with left-wing voters turning out to back right-wing and centrist candidates in order to block rivals from the National Rally and its predecessor the National Front.

Absolutely right, it is unethical because alliances of absolute opposite enemies that have nothing in common are forming to block the first French party, revealing their own incoherence and utter cynicism. It is about staying in power at all cost, at the expenses of the country and the people. That's the contrary of serving a country, it is self-serving and destructive. But it is disguised as noble and virtuous.

Liberal and “far left” are the same on social issues , but differ on economic policies. Think unions and trade unions versus celebrating the liberal “free market” with or without much regulations for protecting the environment or worker’s rights . Conservatives usually are anti whatever social group is the hot thing , but they usually come around . Conservative economics are tax cuts for the rich, under the idea that the rich won’t do stock buybacks or whatever , they’ll reinvest that money. Still waiting for that one to work out . Unions and workers rights’s don’t really matter to them. Only the success of business , again presumably “giving money to rich will allow them to hire more people”. Far right typically are against whatever social groups are not in power , usually quite religious , nationalistic to a worrying degree , reactionary, with economics that are to the right of the conservatives . They usually want to gut the administrative state, the checks and balances within a government. Corruption is more common, and the far right relies more on cult of personality . This applies to American politics but can also be applied to European politics as Europe becomes more neoliberal and thus can’t or won’t solve problems which leads to the rise of reactionary far right groups, a la “immigrants poison the blood of our nation” aka scapegoating . If you think this part sounds familiar , think Germany before the rise of the NotSees.

They can still vote for whoever they want. That's basically the point of the two rounds elections. The first round puts unpopular candidates out of the race, then other candidates can also withdraw. (Why would you participate if you have no chance at winning?) This way the voters' vote wouldn't get wasted on a 5th or even 3rd place candidate, getting some level of representation. I mean, yeah it's nice if your preferred candidate wins, but the second best option is still better than somebody clearly on the other end of the political spectrum.

@@DemPilafian So, let me get this straight, you believe that the far-left will cause more crime and that makes the far-right seem more reasonable, despite the fact that they're awful? I have a few problems with this. 1) it's a false dichotomy. Don't like the more lax policies of the NPF on migration? You don't have to immediately jump to the National Rally, Macron, who has tightened immigration during his tenure, is a much more reasonable candidate. 2) "More crime" is a very nebulous term because, let's be honest, there aren't that many good criticisms of the NPF. And even if there was increased illegal immigration, I would prefer that to pretty much any of the bigotted, racist, and authoritarian politics of NR. 3) Democracy and governance is about compromise. You may not like some of the policies of the left-far-left coalition, but, overall, their policies are better for the nation and the world. You can always vote for the best candidate you can and then argue, organise, and push for change more in line with your beliefs.

Why can't politicians just let the people decide instead of wangling the vote until they get what they want. Voters are supposed to create the social and political landscape, not elitist politicians.

It's important to understand that the term "far right" isn't just a casual label; it refers to a set of political ideologies and movements characterised by extreme nationalism, authoritarianism, and often a rejection of democratic principles. These ideologies typically involve a strong sense of national identity, sometimes coupled with xenophobia, and a desire to maintain or return to traditional social norms and values. They may also include opposition to globalisation, populist rhetoric against political elites, and the promotion of conspiracy theories. Understanding this context helps clarify why the term is used and what it represents in political discourse. If you align with this, then you mate are far right.

"_ These are still the characteristics of the Far-Left, since all of them are part of Collectivism in general. See USSR under Stalin, and modern day China and North Korea for example. Nothing to do with Right wing of any kind. People on the right believe that the best outcome for society is achieved when individual rights and civil liberties are paramount (individualism) and the role - and especially the power - of the government is minimized. There is no Far-Right in mainstream European politics and the only Far-Right person currently would be the Argentinian president, Javier Milei.
