Yup, you're correct about the whole distinction between they could and they were able to. If I heard someone say my dog was able to chase the burglar away, I would think that the dog successfully chased the robber away. Funny thing, I had never noticed this subtlety before.

I read the following sentences from a French textbook : 1. J'ai habité au Cambodge jusqu'en mars 1983. 2. J'ai habité au Cambodge a partir du janvier 1983. 3. Quand elle travaillait au Canada, je suis allé la voir. ( Here, the book says it can be that I visited her once or several times.)

fantastic job! this was my 4th or 5th video on imparfait vs passe compose as i am lazy to read at the moment, but this one is beyond everything else. of course, you took more time to explain things, but the quality.. you are succinct, precise, lot of examples, timeline in description box... i mean 10/10. subscribed and ill check all your videos. thank you

I noticed you use "could" instead of "could have" when translating the imparfait into English. If we treat the imparfait as "could", then how do we translate the conditional could? For example, "il pourrait réparer la voiture..."? Is that not "he could fix the car..."?
@ParapluieFrench
@ParapluieFrench 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not usually one for literal translations, but for the sake of simplicity, the best translation of pouvoir in the imparfait is could. 'Could have' is the conditionnel passé, for example 'j'aurais pu le faire' = I could have done it. 'Il pourrait réparer la voiture' does indeed mean 'he could fix the car', but in the conditional sense i.e. 'he would be able to fix the car'.

@@mta8889 This is mainly a problem with English. Could is an ambiguous word! The best way to think about it is: If could = 'was able', use the imparfait If could = 'would be able', use the conditional

Bonjour Monsieur. Selon mon étude, je pensais que le passé composé c'est égale en anglais comme "pass perfect" Et l'imparfaite aussi c'est égale en anglais comme "pass continous ".
@ParapluieFrench
@ParapluieFrench 2 жыл бұрын

Translation of 1 into english: I didn’t come because I became ill. Translation of 2 into english: I didn’t come because I was ill.

Can't disagree with that! The use of 'become' in the translations demonstrates the change of state quite nicely. Thank you for your insight :)

This was super helpful! Thank you SO much for helping others learn French better. I love, love, love all of the sample sentences. Too many other video authors think we will understand this confusing stuff with some conjugation tables and very little in the way of English meanings and sample sentences. For me, learning French is a hobby. I listen to the videos mostly when I'm doing the dishes or riding my stationery bicycle. So, again, I truly appreciate your time in putting this lesson together.

Grâce à cette vidéo et bien sûr à vos autres vidéos, je suis enfin parvenu à bien comprendre les différences entre le passé composé et l’imparfait! Merci beaucoup ☺️

Bonjour monsieur. 21:36 “we didn’t know if he had lied”... Doesn’t that imply that ‘We do know now’ ? So its a passé compose? Just like how we use ‘ I thought ‘ .. “ I thought he had given up” . Meaning I came to know it is the other way.. Can you please expalin where I’m wrong. Its confusing me very much.

I don't think it's hard. If you could say 'i did' in English use composé, if you could say 'was doing' or similar with 'ing' on the end, use imparfait. Should work most of the time. 'I was walking to school when i fell over.' I was imparfait to school when i passé composé.

This is a REALLY late reply, but I've just seen your comment and would like to clarify that "j'ai sorti mon parapluie" is correct. Sortir only takes être when it means "go out" and has no object. In this case, "sortir" means "take out" and it has an object (mon parapluie), so it uses avoir. I'm planning on making a video about this, but hopefully that helps.
