@@opcat56 Sappers, also known as military engineers were and are basically soldiers who build, deply or destroy fortifications and traps during battles. During the Napoleonic wars, sappers were the taller, stronger and most brute soldiers in the French army. They were also responsible for destroying enemy fortifications during siege battles, like the one at the video. Sappers existed at all nations and armies, not only the French.

They usually get a gun if they're on the assault just no bayonet. But yknow after you break down a gate it's immediately hand-to-hand combat Edit : I mixed up Voltigeur and Sapeur, Sapper is a regular line infantry as in they get musket bayonet and fight in lines, they just have specialty in building and demolition, and they get axe

French sappeurs of many regiments carried a pistol to the dismay of officers, but many were not armed with rifles while on an assault, as their job wasn’t to shoot, but to hack into obstacles for those armed with guns.
