GM "mini perf" vinyl DOES tear easily. But it's so perforated it's barely holding on.

The way this design is structured keeps everything held together quite well. If there was only one layer stitched over and over, line by line the integrity would be severely compromised in comparison to the method shown here. That inner backing strip covering the initial pipings helps immensely I'm sure too; as well as laying your stitches in the exact same holes limits that perforated effect you speak of (however I'm not sure the latter method was used here). I figure nylon backin strip could be used in its place also, for even more solidity. Ultimately it is the entire structure that gives it its strength.

I have never tried a waxed cotton thread on a car interior. I am going to find out about these threads. You need to use pigmented/embossed chrome tanned leather for your car interior! This the type of leather the automotive industry mostly uses. It’s very soft and pliable

Hello Bris, I could advise the ideal machine for handbags is a 'cylinder bed/arm, walking foot sewing machine' Some of these machines come with an extra portable wood table to get a flat bed if necessary. Generalmente uso una máquina industrial pfaff 1245-706 de mesa plana, triple arrastre tal como se aprecia en el video. Esta máquina tiene dos tipos de pié de presión, uno es el mas común con el que hago todas las costuras planas y el otro pié que casi no uso es el que tiene un 'canal' en la parte inferior y sirve para coser el 'vivo' (es el cordoncito que se pone envuelto en material(tela, vinil o cuero) que refuerza y adorna los filos de las uniones de un cojín o asiento.

For furniture 8 to 10 mm long. For car seats 6 mm. Dashboards, door panels, consoles, etc. 3 to 4 mm long. Sometimes, I use 92 thread size and for some other jobs 138. Thanks for watching the videos!

I am using 'automotive leather material' on top and as a 'foamed backing' or reinforcement below 'headliner material 1/4" thick'. For the 'first sewings or closing sewings' I have used a needle 110=18 with thin standard upholstery thread number 92. To do the ornamental sewings on top (double stitches and over sewing) I have used a thicker thread 138 with a thicker needle 140=22. The 'plastic pipe' is 3 mm thick. +SuperDuty455 Half of an inch foam thickness is the standard measure...for the other additional panels, it can be used a thinner 1/4" foam. If you're constantly dealing with heavy leathers, it's advisable a thick needle...a 140=22 or a 160=23 are OK. To do an easier sewing is advisable to skive the strips of leather to do the piping (half the size...no much)

Yes, a regular sewing machine could be useful to do some upholstery work. Although with some limitations it is possible. The ideal machine to do upholstery is a 'triple transportation/walking foot, industrial sewing machine'. +Bayareahotrods I use the standard polyester upholstery thread and needle (120=19) to do the 'closing sewing'...you get very tight seams...it avoids too big holes a needle leaves in the material and clashing views of thread through the seams after the sewing. The double stitches on top can be done with smae thread size and needle or if you want a thicker thread a 140=22 needle size is OK. A 140=22 needle size could be used for both procedures...it is a standard measure and not too thick.

Hi Ray, I use the same needle size for leather and vinyl...wedge point. If you use a standard thread 92 to do upholstery a 120=19 needle size would be ok...a 140=22 also works good for heavier materials and for thicker threads such as 207. You are welcome!

I'm located in Mexico and sizes have different denomination. If you're located in USA it seems to me the thin basic upholstery thread corresponds to number 92 and the thicker one is 138. Frederick Thompson I'd go with a 96 poly if your machine can handle a 138 or 207 those work great for accent top stitching but when you get into heavier threads timing on the machine may have to be adjusted.

+Cordell Longtine if you refer to the 'ribbon/strip' backing of french seams I use... it is a thin vinyl. A canvas fabric, denim material can also be useful...at the upholstery suppliers, we could find the ribbons ready.
