It will be fascinating to one day hear Macron's reasoning behind his decision to hold a snap election. Until then, we'll have to keep on guessing.

I'm sure Macron is aware of the situation, but I think he has his own agenda.

The retired age should be higher like 68 or 70. Medicine is going to keep people healthy much much longer. French people have to face reality.

I think if you've already paid with the retirement age specifically at 62 you should get that deal otherwise what's to stop the government to keep doing it workers should be given consideration

It's unlikely to be as bad for Macro as this coverage suggests - we'll know in a few weeks.

I think what everyone is forgetting, but the French are not, was that moving the retirement age from 62 to 64 in early 2023 was less then popular and followed by massive protests nation wide. Was it necessary? YES. Was it popular? NO. So, while Macron may be one of the best leaders France has had of late, he likely was not one of his best moves, as he is upsetting everyone else's political apple cart. JUST SAYING...

We’re getting our revenge! We will never forgive him for betraying us! The president has always been on the French people side and this 1 sold his soul to The EU and the WEF and bankrupt France to fulfil a globalist agenda. Once a banker, always a banker. I hate the man for what he represents and his policies.

Absolutely correct. France is already in very significant debt, as are most countries, but continuing to pay pensions out at such an early age makes it less competitive with other countries who have more realistic pension qualifying ages. I don't warm to Macron but he made a tough decision there for the benefit of the country - trouble is that the majority of those protesting against his reforms are simply thinking "Devil take the hindmost".

I agree. French usually praise their President when he is gone. Even Holland is having a possible return to politics. Sarko stays in the shadow because he went too far.

Its only 1 year to keep funding stable not a big deal, French cry over everything like babies need to become men and grow up. Take the change and move on with life.

I can imagine some negative sentiment from the people toward Macron: 1). He decided to get France further involved in the war (french soldiers on Ukraine soil), meaning putting French youth's lives at risk, and risk of total war with Russia; 2). Generous support for Ukraine, especially financial aspect while public debt is already high, and lack of investment in tech of the future (EV, AI, 5G...). Such money to escalate the war is unacceptable, in this light.

This isn't just one 2 round election, it is 500 2 round elections. It is quite possible to see each political grouping gain about 30% in the 2nd round, but have one group holding an absolute majority due to that electoral quirk.

Not a bad presentation. Bardella is already changing his mind about trying to govern , eh eh. The guy doesn’t want to burn his chances for 2027. He is hollow and shallow but like most careerist he is not stupid.

With high National Debt, France has problems and needs reforms to reduce the world high levels of the public sector. Actions to achieve this are not popular with the people. The people do not act on the basis of a sound understanding of the financial information. Penn & Co. have a popular theme but running a country is more than just a one policy endevour. You can't spend your way out of the problem France has, if you try the people will end up paying with high interest rates.

If, France does elect a far-right government, and immigration is subsequently dramatically reduced, it desperately needs to address the fertility rate crisis and somehow find a way to persuade French women to start having more children. Raising the retirement age would only be a very short-term band-aid solution and couldn't solve the underlying problem of a rapidly aging population.
