This week’s video answers some of the most frequently asked questions about my hip surgery at age 26. If you suffer from hip dysplasia, hip labral tears, or both and require hip arthroscopy and/or a periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) then I hope you find this video helpful. This is my personal journey dealing with the new diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip and having surgery while in medical residency. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions about the process and in the mean time I hope you enjoy this video and the rest of the videos I make on this journey! i've been following your videos for awhile. I just had my SECOND PAO and arthroscopy a month ago. i hope i really don't need anymore for awhile! what an experience! As a current grad student, sitting for long hours has been so hard on my body until around month 4. ! how did you manage medical school/internship while recovering? SO HARD!

Hey there, thanks for watching! How are you recovering after your second surgery? Keeping up with it all has definitely been tough, but honestly having the support of co-residents and family and my spouse really made the difference! This week's video (which drops in 1.5 hours) talks more about my long term progress 2 years after my first hip surgery and 11 months post-op from my revision surgery! Check it out and lemme know what you think

Which doctor did your surgery? How is the pain after 1 year

Did your surgeon discuss the possibility of getting HO/Heterotrophic Ossification? Did you have your hip bone radiated (ionized radiation) or had to take high doses of Celebrex (anti inflammatories) to prevent HO? That's what my surgeon is requiring before my upcoming hip labral tear repair surgery. 🤔 I think I need to insist they do an MRI if my right hip before surgery cuz I'm compensating and it hurts too. Glad you are doing well.

Excellent questions! I’ll make sure to include these in an upcoming video. Thank you for your well wishes! Just found out I’m having a repeat surgery on my left hip due to complications ❤️ but I’m hopeful this will do the trick! New video up about it now

Gosh you were lucky to be able to have three visitors. Here in Melbourne Australia we are not allowed any visitors in hospital even still today.

I definitely was so thankful to have had as many visitors as I did! When I had my 2nd hip surgery, things were definitely more restricted and I was only allowed 2 visitors during the entire stay, and they could not be alternated to include anyone else. How are restrictions in Australia now?

@@DOCGIRLFITNESS Things have eased now in Australia thankfully. I had hip surgery in March this year and hospital rules were that I was allowed to have one visitor during specified visitors hours. (and it could be a different visitor everyday). But interestingly enough every hospital had different rules and my Aunt was in the ICU in March as well but the hospital she was at didn't allow visitors unless they thought you were imminently terminal. Right now things are better though and you can have two visitors at a time during visiting hours. Still have to wear the N95 mask of course!

I just had my pao this week. I also knew beforehand I had a labrum tear and was expecting the hip dysphasia and tear would be fixed. I am 20 and went through most of the pre doctors appointments by myself. I don’t remember specifically what the doctor told me before surgery but I expected without doubt they would be fixing the labrum tear as well. I found out after the surgery they did not fix the labrum tear. I don’t understand why they did not fix the tear. Does anyone know why this might be. I am angry as I was under the impression both problems would be fixed. If anyone has any information for me please let me know. Thank you

I would ask! But research is still out on whether fixing the tear adds additional benefit. My surgeon is doing a study on that right now. I know often they rotate the bone and then the tear is in an area that doesn’t bear weight, so it’s not painful. Many people feel 100% better and don’t have their tear fixed, so don’t stress about it too much just yet. But I would ask your surgeon for their specific reasoning, especially if they told you they would fix it.

I’m so sorry to hear that! I would 100% recommend reaching out to your doctor and asking why he decided to approach your specific hip concerns the way he did. ❤️ how is your progress going?
