from where i grew up in LA, "fob" refers to someone who just has a heavier accent and is more rooted outside of america whether or not he/she grew up in the states. whether i was fobby or not, none of us wanted to call ourselves fobs so that's a little different for me than what eddie huang is talking about.

There are stereotypes that came about because they are true but are not offensive. There are positive and negative ones about each ethnicity. Chinese push education, Indian put more value on men, Italians are obsessed with their food, American... at the moment we’re not doing so hot to put it lightly. Grew up Midwest and yes we put ranch on everything, forget how to drive in snow after the first snowfall of the year. Now I live in Texas and so so so many stereotypes are true but everyone loves it! Everything is bigger, being a gentleman is a thing, not saying Howdy back is rude, beans in chili is a sin, and shooting guns and going to a tailgate is a perfectly normal date. Hahaha

I'm Asian myself and I make an Asian joke once in a while, non-asians get more offended than we do. Some stereotypes are actually true. Ryan Higa made a video about it I think and why would us Asians get offended by them. The only joke I have problems with is small eyes, not all of us have that trait. But otherwise some Asian stereotypes are that we are good in math (It's true where I am right now) even though it is a stereotype I am kinda proud that my kin is regarded as one of the major dominators in math.

Making fun of other races doesn't have the same effect because you are no longer poking fun at yourself. lol My mom & I make Asian jokes all the time, She is Canadian born Chinese & I'm American born chinese. It's important to be aware of your relationship with a person before cracking the joke hahaha xD

yeah it's a weird american thing to get offended for other people. I'm part turkish and I was joking with a lebanese woman about bacon since she was complaining it being gross and some white blond american woman got offended for the lebanese woman. she even rolled her eyes so much I thought she was going to loose them, she wasn't even part of the conversation, she just felt the need to make it all about her.

First of all, I want to applaud the ABC Network for having an Asian American family centered comedy ensemble show. Like Nancy O'Dell said in this video, it's been more than 20 years since there has been a tv show centering on Asian Americans. And like Nancy said in this video, there are than 20 million Americans who identify themselves as Asian Americans and Asian. It's been SO LONG overdue for the TV and entertainment industry to feature some Asian Americans as leads or main characters for a TV show. I'm an Asian American, and so many times I have felt that Asian Americans and Asians were treated as the invisible minority in the U.S. along with Native Americans - American Indians. At least African Americans have had more TV shows featuring African Americans and networks like BET and OWN have many shows featuring African Americans. And Latinos have networks such as UNIVISION, etc. I feel that Asian Americans, Asians, and Native Americans - American Indians are treated as invisible minorities and are so under represented in TV shows and on TV in general. Yeah - I know that there are many Asian American journalists, anchors, reporters on TV but I'm talking about TV comedy shows, dramas, thrillers, action show, reality TV shows, etc. featuring Asian American leads. I actually took the time to watch the first two episodes - the season premiere of "Fresh Off the Boat". The first two shows were decent. How I was raised as an Asian American was different from the way Eddie Huang was raised. And my parents weren't like Constance Wu's Mom character. I hope people realize that this "Fresh Off the Boat" show is based off the experience of ONE person's experience - Eddie Huang. And that not all Asian American and Asian families are like Eddie Huang's family or the Asian American family portrayed in "Fresh Off the Boat". But at the same time - I feel that ABC Network needs to be patient and realize that having a show such as "Fresh Off the Boat" is so important for the 20 million Asian Americans and Asians living in this country. We need representation on TV shows. It's important for ABC to be patient and to keep this "Fresh Off the Boat" on the air. If they are patient and keep the show on their network, then I feel that many other networks will follow their lead and take the leap of faith of having more shows that feature Asian American entertainers, actors, and actresses which is so sorely needed. Many Asian Americans and Asians have to turn to KZfaq to find other Asian Americans and Asians to relate to and communicate with. If TV networks don't want to lose viewers to KZfaq - then they need to take the leap of faith and make more shows featuring more Asian Americans and Asians on their shows. The same goes for Native Americans, etc. And of course, "Fresh off the Boat" will be closely scrutinized and criticized. There's a lot of pressure on the "Fresh off the Boat" cast because "Fresh Off the Boat" is the only Asian American ensemble comedy show on American TV. Being the only show featuring many Asian Americans is going to subject that show to a lot of close analysis and judgment. But like I said - I hope ABC is patient with this "Fresh Off the Boat" and realize that having this show on their network is important. ABC is doing a great service for the melting pot that is the U.S.A., and that they need to realize that they're taking the lead in promoting diversity and featuring actors and actresses that represent what it's like to be Americans living in America. ABC showed faith in shows such as "Ugly Betty", "Black-ish", "Cristela", that "All American Girl" show with Margaret Cho, etc. They need to be patient with "Fresh Off the Boat". I think this show is very important, not only for Asian Americans, but also for American society and the issue of diversity as a whole. JMO.

Personally, I love he show because many of the things in the show is depicted accurately, and me, an Asian (Chinese) can relate to it. I also love it because they reveal the struggles of being Asian and the racism they experience, so even though people call it "offensive" or what-not, I feel represented in the media as an Asian, and I think this show is very very relatable.

It's not offensive because these "stereotypes" actually portray Chinese American life really accurately. The stereotypes many typical Hollywood movies promote are offensive because they are simply poking fun at race. Fresh Off the Boat does poke fun at the oddities of Chinese American culture but the stereotypes are so accurate and relatable it just isn't offensive.

I am not offended, I am happy that such a show exists and created some acting opportunities for Asian Americans. However, I cannot stop question when will ever Hollywood break away from the typical stereotypical jokes, satires, representation of Asian Americans in America, and when will the Asian Americans stop using such representation on their own shows? For instance, when will America embrace a bunch of Asian women shouting in Cantonese (as happened in the show) as normal rather than treat it as humor...was that really funny? You know, that's normal for many Cantonese to speak loudly and argue at home...but it is not common for that to happen in a Mandarin household, so another question is does "Fresh Off the Boat" accurately represent Asians/Asian/Chinese Americans as a whole or just a sub group of Asians/Asian Americans? I hope the show does not generalize and give the general american audience another tunnel vision to be stereotypical against Asians.

I just genuinely don’t see how these characteristics of these characters are stereotypical. I come from a Mexican-German household and I have never related to a show more than I have with Fresh Off The Boat. The Huang family in the show hold so many characteristics to my own. It’s a shame that people done just see this is a family show.

I love this show and truly think it might help non asians see and appreciate the struggles and culture of asians in America. That said, asians who come here have far better opportunities than they ever would have in China and yet they come here, refuse to assimilate, and then complain about everything. If you love your culture so much stay where you came from. This is not a racist thought. It is an honest and simple answer to all this "You cant say Fresh off the Boat" bullshit. Hey Huang, if you're not going to change or limit your vocabulary why should anyone else? See, it works both ways. Besides, asians are the most racist cultures there are. They just do it more subtly than whites.

Some stereotypes (not all) are derived partially from the truth. Are Asian American families strict when it comes to stressing the importance of education? A lot of the times, yes. Do "tiger moms" exist? Yes. But then, there are other stereotypes that are simply not true and only made up for comedy reasons.

I as an Asian person do feel this show does little to advance my ethnicity in society. To me, it's great that the show shows both very traditional sides of immigrant families and how others adopted very much an American lifestyle. But the show's laughing points are nearly always around Asian stereotypes - Jessica's character more or less is constructed on her Asianess and not on say just her as a frugal person. It feels to me like Eddie Huang wears his Asianess and his acceptance of the stereotypes, laughing at himself, as a way to fit in with mainstream society. I think he could have done better.

Doesn't matter how Asians are depicted in Western culture, because non Asians will always have the same perspectives and stereo types towards Asians regardless. The show was just about being themselves and it shows how they embraced living in America and culture while maintaining their roots. Asians do that more than most immigrants in Western culture. They are self sufficient, never play the race card and cry discrimination and play victim. They just work their ass off and make a better life for themselves and don't need snowflake SJW's to defend them. When was the last time a talk show featured Asians whining and complaining about being oppressed by Western culture ?
