Will smith apologises for keeping Speed in his locker which carlton accidentally took and ended up in hospital. He cries. With real tears :O Very sad part of the episode. Episode 3x19 - Just Say Yo.

I'm equally impressed with how Uncle Phil dealt with it. He didn't explode in a fit of impotent rage or start yelling at him abusively; he countered every defence Will had with rational, valuable responses - that he shouldn't even be contemplating taking drugs, that his carelessness almost killed someone close to him, and could have hurt him as well. Then, knowing that Will owned up because he felt remorseful, he decides to make him apologise to the family because he knows that doing so will drive the point home. And then when Will breaks down crying, he goes and hugs him, just to let him know that the lesson has been learned, and everything's okay. Like a proper father.

Not only that, the fact he addresses Carlton not as his "son" but as "someone dear to Will" is so smooth and better. It's not alienating Will from the "main" family nor making uncle Phil resentful towards him, it shows he cares for Will as if he was his own son and wants Will to realize that.

I love that Uncle Phil’s anger and fear are not just because of Carlton, but Will too. He treated Will and Carton as equal sons of his. He was just harder on Will because he needed it. He needed a father, a strict but loving one. In my head cannon Will didn’t get into “one little fight and his mom got scared” I bet she could see he was heading down a dark path in the future. Living in a neglected project, surrounded by gangs, drugs and crime. I mean Will was all she had, and she sent him across the country. She’s lucky she had the chance to give Will a new life in Bel Air, a life with lots of potential. I mean can you imagine how much it hurt her to decide to send him away for his own good.

Normally, to me, when I see something like this happen in a show and someone responds the way Uncle Phil did initially, I don't expect them to show anything else. But I remember as a kid being surprised that he still comforted Will after he owned up to what he did.

***** well that would be a shame, xtc and psychedelics seem to have a lot of potential in treating drug (heroine) addiction, depression, PTSD and who knows what else.

Everyone needs an Uncle Phil. Call you out on your BS, but has your back when you need it. Great scene.

This is why I love 90’s sitcoms and this show cause it showed comedy, social justice, emotional topics that got us touch bases in our heart. Uncle Phil will forever be will father in fresh prince of bell air. Even though he was angry at will for what he did wrong, will own up to his mistakes and apologizing for what he did. Uncle Phil really didn’t want to get angry cause those stuff happen in our life blood is thicker than water. That why uncle Phil will be a legend of fresh prince

Will smith is the best actor ever. The way he makes these scenes look so real and now he slowly builds up to the breaking down and his voice chocking up. He’s the greatest in my opinion

You can see how Uncle Phil gave both tough love and understanding love in just the right amount. He went rightfully angry at Will and corrected him that he didn't have any excuse, even got him to apologize to the whole family. BUT then when Will done it all, he hugged him and forgave him. That is a good father right there.
