Many people have asked the question: Should I keep my diamondback terrapin in fresh water or brackish water? On today's video I give my opinion and my experience dealing with both fresh water and brackish water setups for diamondback terrapins.

This video makes me think how they would behave if a freshwater tub and a brackish tub are set up right next to each other and connected by bridge doubles as basking spot.

That is my end goal. I currently have mine in a 150 g. Stock tank in brackish water, but plan to add a second tub with the nest area in the middle to allow them to move between the brackish and fresh water as they please.

Just got a diamondback hatchling a few days ago, went with brackish water due to the fact I have suspicions that he may have been taken from the wild, former owner claimed he came from a flea market for $40 only a couple days before he came to me. Hopefully he was captive bred, but theres no way of knowing as far as I can tell. Didn't know that about the urea, another great reason to choose Brackish. Subbed btw.

I have anubius in light brackish water prepping for my terrapin. I need to look into mangrove availability in the uk. Have you considered giving them access to both water types... We have ours in a tank n plan to have a sink attachment to allow her to feed in fresh water seperate sink that is easy to clean out and she can drink at will

Is it ok to use non-iodized salt to make brackish water? You mentioned using pool salt or Instant Ocean - not sure what are pros and cons of each.

I just got a baby concentric. When I received him he had white spots on his shell. I've been treating him with better Beading for 15 minutes washing it off and then putting a fungus cream on it for 45 mi minutes. He is in freshwater. Do you think I could change a baby to brackish? If so how? He is in a 30 gallon right now. Water perimeters are good.

Try making a mud mixture for bottom of fresh water ponds. In the wild they spend a ton of time hunkered in the mud.

I would also not recommend going from salt to fresh. Once in brackish i have never heard of someone having great success switching to fresh. Going from fresh to salt is good but also good to know what parents where raised in if you have a hatchling that is generational fresh might be best to wait til they are older before starting transition.

Casa De Finch I’ve transitioned my terrapins pretty regularly back and forth as needed winters are typically brackish for all mine and then pond residents are typically put in fresh for the summer. Won’t always be that way

Great video all together. I definitely think if you can keep them all in one enclosure separated from other species then brackish is the way to go.

If you are concerned you could slowly change the water week by week. Thats what we have done but fresh to brackush

The word you were looking for is excrete, not secrete. Excretion is the elimination of waste. Secretion is a glandular release.

Ones kept in fresh water have a higher chance of being sick. Not sure what you are referring to by “always sick”

This one had an “abscess” this one has a “fungal infection” geesh

@@deexonedeexone9773 I wouldn’t consider fungal issue as sick, terrapins not kept in brackish water tend to get fungus rather easy, 90% of time you treat it without a vet. The abscess yea it’s been an issue that caused me to decide not to work with box turtles. Clearly I wasn’t providing the care necessary so I decided to step away from them. Keep in mind people post videos about sick animals so people can learn how to deal with it, I have plenty of completely healthy animals that have never been sick. But when you keep 30+ turtles bound to have issues here and there.
