We did it! The engine is rebuilt and today it goes back into our "Swap to Street" 1930 Ford Model A. After the engine goes in, Davin gets to work buttoning up things like the transmission, fuel lines, radiator, hoses and more. Then, at last, it's water, oil, and fuel, and we push the car out of the garage and attempt to start it up for the first time. Will it run?

I am 84 and grew up on Model A's. Sure wish I had had a balanced crankshaft like you have. We made a race car out of a topless two door, If I remember right we took 50 thousand off the head put a silver dollar in the babbet for each rod bearing, used bearing blue and scraped and fitted each rod to 2 thousands, installed a 3/4 Escaderian cam, ported and releaved the block, cut the manifolds up and it made a down draft intake and dual exhaust. Installed a electric fuel pump and a Willis carburetor. Installed a magneto from a Baldwin combine motor and hooked up some linkage so we could optimize the timing of the engine. The car ran very good, it was fast! But we should have worked on the steering and the brakes long before we started on the motor!

Great comment. I rebuilt mine when I was 20 (32 years ago) dropped the pan 2 years ago and dropped a shim on the rod caps, mains looked good. I recently got a downdraft and a castiron header and my god the difference in all around driveability. Still looking for a combine mag, I found the cam gear cover mount on a concrete mixer but mag was long gone.

It’s very hard to get the timing wrong on a model A , use the pin bolt on the front timing gear cover , take it out , put the pin reverse it and put the pin end in and slowly hand or crank the motor over until the pin drops in on a hole on the gear ,should be on # 1 adjust to suit , sounded like the fuel mix was incorrect when it wouldn’t start at first.

THANK YOU & Your Bein Nice.. This Is looks like someone who ain’t all he may think he is.. & Having to drag that motor after the build.. & Yes I know the Babbitt Material Bearing Starts Out Tight.. But No I’ve Built Them Wit My POP Many Years Ago. Thay Start RITE Up When The Done Rite Theres No Draging The Car Or Any Of This Nonsense The Simplicity Of That Motor Is What Makes It A Model A .. They Start Rite Up.. When There Done With Care ..You Actually Need A Little Feeling In It On Those Or Any Build .. But On All The Old Stuff Especially.. just sayin Looks A Little Hackish

Seeing that model A reminds me of a picture my Grandmother showed me as a kid. It was of her, her brother and her best friend as teenagers sitting on my great uncle's model A in downtown Athens. She told me he was worried that some college kid was going to steal it so he hooked the battery up to the body panel and the door handles. The very first day he drove it into town and parked, he came out of the hardware store with some kid hollering beside his car. The trick seemed to have worked and word spread not to mess with his Model A. Btw, this was sometime around 1932 or 34.

An easy way to set base timing. TDC the engine firing #1, turn the distributor in the opposite direction to rotation until the points just open with the rotor in the #1 position. Lock it down & you have a few degrees of advance.

You do know that the flywheel cover must be indicated to .006 TIR before connecting the bell housing? Beyond .006 and you can have all sorts of problems with the transmission. Use an indicator with a magnetic base. Put the base on the end of the crankshaft Turn the engine over with the pulley bolt and take a reading at say, every 20 degrees.Shim as needed. Needless to say, but this operation is a lot easier to do with the engine out of the car. When Henry (or Edsel) designed this system, they used two parts, the Flywheel cover and the bell housing. This was later reduced to just one, the bell housing. Terry

Hope that coil being flipped upside down is only temporary. I own a 1960's Wisconsin V4 that has the coil sitting sideways. Whatever fluid that is used in that coil leaked out and wicked through a solid copper ignition wire and made its way to the cap and rotor. Unfortunately that fluid became hygroscopic or something and killed the spark. Hope this helps save a few headaches in the future.

I saw the time-lapse, but it didn't explain why engine timing was broken. Was it the original distributor? Was it timed wrong when putting in the aux shaft? Fascinating build of a classic. Dare you to take on a 16 cylinder Caddy 8-)

@hagerty do you guys have like a shop manual for torque settings and order of install type thing. Or is it kind of just whatever you think is right based off of experience?
