Hyalella Azteca Scud UNBOXING from Goliad Farms.
Culturing scuds is easy in an aquarium, but acclimating them to a 34 degree water pond might have been a big fail.
Freshwater scuds are a great source of food for small fish, and I am trying to establish hyalella azteca and gammarus scuds in my fishing pond as an additional forage base for perch and panfish.
Scuds also are excellent at cleaning up decaying detritus in your pond and helping your overall water quality.

I'm guessing you never found any hybrid bass that survived. I'm excited to try a little fishing this weekend to see if I can catch any new perch or walleye. Getting the hybrid bass later on this spring.

I haven’t seen a one of the HSB. I’m thinking they didn’t survive the stocking in the fall. Good luck to you fishing. Weather is so warm this spring. It’s crazy!

Oh man. I’m sorry they might not have made it.

My own fault…some did. The Texas scud strain need a little more time to get used to the colder temps think! 😂 I had them in the garage at 45 degrees for a couple days prior. But that water was cold in pond, they just shriveled up. I’ll hold out for the northern gammarus strain for my next attempt.

Are they not cold hardy? Would they have done better if you had introduced them in the summer? I just released some Scuds to my pond just now, and I'm assuming they are going to thrive because it's warm.

I think it had everything to do with the temperature difference. They are cold hardy….just the shock of going from Texas to Iowa in the winter didn’t seem to bode well for them. If I were to stock them now in 70 degrees, they’d be fine I’m sure. I know they tolerate wide temp ranges….just not all at once. Who knows, maybe some of mine toughed it out and made it. I’ll continue to look for signs of them. Hope yours do well and develop a healthy population for your pond.
