Happy Fretless Friday! Here's Wildflowers on the fretless banjo! Not so sure about how this one turned out, but it was interesting to play! And I always love a chance to use that slidey 5 chord. I had hoped my cat Sweetpea would join me for this, but in typical cat form, she declined my invitation. Hope everyone's staying cool during this heat wave! Also this is just filmed with my phone mic; I need to figure out what's going on with my little portable mic so I can start using it again!

Many leadership gurus remind us that helpful leaders remain a non-anxious presence in troubled times. Not all leaders make big decisions. You, Phoebe Sanders offer all of us, leaders and team members an example of what a non-anxious presence looks like. You enjoy each moment. You learn from sweet and/or sour accidents. And you keep creating beauty. And beauty will save the world.

A very wise music teacher once taught me that you need to use an electronic tuner any time you play a fretless. He says it’s critically important while practicing, and he even has one set up when he performs, and he’s a famous fella. He says it’s really important to have that visual confirmation of when the note is on pitch, and when it isn’t. Anyway, I only mention it because of the thing that happened at the start of this video, and because you seem concerned when things are off pitch.

I always enjoy fretless Fridays. I play synths and keys and don’t have to worry about tuning. I’m so lazy. But I love your claw hammer playing. There are artists who play a little out of tune on purpose. So you’re cool like them. Keep on strumming.

As a wooden flute maker, if I want a flute to play on a certain day, in summer for example, I need to make and tune it in summer. Altitude also matters. A flute made on a sunny day will play flat on a rainy day. A flute made at sea level will play flat at altitude.

I can't post a link in a you tube comment, but if you google up "Black Mountain slide ring" you should hit on the Black Mountain site. They are a Canadian company in Vancouver BC I think. I use their thumb picks (I'm not good enough to claw hammer). I noticed their slide rings and have seen guitarists use them. And of course dobro artists use similar tools. I wonder if you might get some interesting milage out of a slide ring on your fretless? Your mention of using a fingernail to fret and then your mention of "sounds a bit like a dobro" got me to thinking... Best of luck! Thank you for the videos. Can't wait to purchase your first album!
