This is a very rough guide. I'm a mezzo soprano, I think coloratura, and my range is E3-F6. I'm not a soprano because my vocal tone is too dark.

I think I might be a mezzo contralto but people say that doesn't exist... So i don't know what I am.

Hello ! i can sing in a confortable range from F3 to A5 easily, but can reach D3 if i work on it, if i work i think i can do some Bb5 (i can do it when i warm up my voice, but can’t sing it properly, mostly like a dying dolphin for now ;-) ). But my voice sounds like a (low) soprano because I have a light voice, not a dark voice, so i don’t think i am contralto, at all ! i don’t understand anything... Could someone explain me something ? Thank you very much ! :-)

Nataliah Drake you sound very similar to me! My chest voice goes up to a c#5 and my head voice an F6. I know I'm not a soprano because like you I have a darker colour. You might be a mezzo soprano. Some mezzos, like us, can still sing soprano notes :)

Lydia your post is confused. You don't sound like Nataliah at all! You sound like a soprano and Nataliah sounds like a mezzo or contralto. I read some authority say that its the note you crack on that determines your fach and yours is the soprano. A4 is the contralto.

Nataliah, you need proper training. I'm getting it right now and I'm telling you learning to do mixed voice properly isn't that easy. To get it working you have to learn to sing very "forward" and I don't think you can really teach this to yourself. You need a skilled teacher. Its about the way you sing the vowels. But as I'm learning from a male opera singer /teacher, i still have some confusion about it myself. That is to say i feel at this point, he's teaching to me sing the way he sings which is a little bit scary when I put it like that because he's a proper tenor and i'm a woman! Also the bright feel, is a technique thing as well so again a teacher should be able to give you that. The soprano colour i think freya is referring to is something else and I feel like i know what you are referring to. I don't feel like i've got it either but my teacher has said i'm a soprano because my voice goes up to the soprano range - ab0ve high c as well.

My vocal range is D3-Bb5-F7. My support and resonance range is F3-D5-F6 and I'm either a Spinto Soprano or a Coloratura Mezzo Soprano. I've been confused between the voice types lately.

Mitch Grassi is the only example of a famous counter-tenor I can think of right now (only bc I'm a big fan of him but *shrug*)

Is that so? I was convinced that counteralto is a low female voice but with a well developed high register typical for a soprano. And I thought it was pretty common in pop music - Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey, Cristina Scabbia...

Get some lessons. YOu can learn to go over your break.

LOL i'm answering everything as if i know everything but i'm a student too. Anyway trust me on this though because I have tried and failed and understood now why you can't teach yourself, now that I have a good teacher and seeing how its making a difference. Its not just that you need a real teacher, you need a good teacher. I had a teacher for a while and my voice didn't change, though i did learn quite a bit about how to learn and sing certain types of music. I was also doing what i thought was a really good audio singing course with 66 lessons, very clear instructiosn and so on. It was in mixed voice. In the end, I completely missed the mixed part of it all. There's a lot of difficulty iwth the terminology that is used in singing. You think something is meant by a word and it means something quite different. But the main reason you need a teacher is because you need immediate feedback on the sound you are producing. Your voice needs to be gently coaxed into a different place in order for it do new things. If you only follow video and audio courses, you will probably not do them correctly. Another reason for this failing is because mostly these video teachers do not sing through the whole range when they do exercises. They jsut do the lower easy part and save their voices on the upper parts. But even if they did sing them, it can be hard to figure out exactly what they are doing in their mouths and larynx. So if you really want to learn to sing, have one on one wiht a teacher - even over skype.

Get some lessons. If you can't sing in tune, that mgiht be why your friends don't like it but sing for yourself anywayl. Having lessons will be useful if you can sing in tune most of the time and when you know a song properly. Personally i don't think its worth having lessons if you always struggle to sing the correct pitches.

I sort of agree with this and feel similarly but I'll tell you something. A lot of classical sopranos can sing well in teh low range. I suspect that freya is right when she says you should sing where your voice sounds best and feels most comfortable. Renee Flemming for istance is a soprano wiht a global reputation and yet she started out as a jazz singer. Jazz singers always are good in their lower and middle ranges. So don't worry. I think your choir leaders just want you in this or that category for the good of their choir at the time. Don't let yourself be fixed by what these people want to do with you.

Baritone is good. Be happy. Bass is the one that sucks though they can be impressive. Baritones at least can sing a whole song and sound good.

Not necessarily. Sometimes when we hit those upper ranges our voices crack because we tense up to much and cause it to come out sounding not quite right lol

Yes, actually! There is a voice type called a contralto, whose range is from the lower area of an alto to the higher area of a tenor, and sometimes can go all the way into the baritone register. That is what I am. I was classically trained as an alto, mostly because my teacher didn't know how to teach me for what my voice was. A contralto can sing alto, but with some difficulty at first.

Alto isn't actually a voice type for women, but rather used for boys. The female voice type for low pitched women is contralto. I'm a woman in my early 30s, non-smoker who can sing as low as the G two octaves below middle C all the way up to E two octaves above middle C, but my most comfortable and richest range is singing tenor with the men. I only sing alto when it's too low for the altos. Usually I can sing all four voice parts in polyphony.

The Best Time but alto voices are so beautiful! I particularly love contraltos (slightly deeper) like Lisa Gerard she has such a rich, lovely voice.

I really find that alto voices are sooo very beautiful and sultry sounding. I actually love hearing a soulful, bluesy, jazzy alto sounding voice.
