Id say the smell of the freshly cut lumber mixed with the exhaust from the detroit on a frosty morning is pure heaven........

man I love seeing these old mills still up and running. there so productive and easy to maintain and will outrun and outlast any bandsaw mill out there and I think they make better lumber as well.

We sawed some Hickory off the the farm about 7 years ago for the flooring in my house. I had a guy in town tongue and groove and skip plane it to leave the saw marks and it came out beautifully.

Looks like the old Frick mill down the road about 1/2 mile that we got run ragged on after school till black dark every evening. Took 6 of us to run it but it was like fighting fire from when we bailed off the bus or piled out of somebody's car till we just couldn't see. Pulled it with a 2-valve 4-71 that the numbers said was made from 50 to 52. Had the edger going, a cutoff and a doodling chain. The old motor still runs but needs an inframe. Got a 6-71 a couple of years ago. She'll smoke now! Got a ball bearing edger instead of babbitt bearings. V-belt drive. Old Scalawag about 5 miles away has a flat belt mill or had. He passed on a while back. Good Scalawags are hard to find anymore. The sawyer/logger that had the mill's grandson runs it now. Has an old R-model with a 300 something that's still going strong.

Love these old mills! We have a 1923 Farquhar mill, which is compatible with Frick, powered by a 1936 Caterpillar D13000. The Cat purrs at 800-825 rpm. Quite a difference from the screaming Detroits that are more common.

My father in law has been in lumber all his life. He and his brothers had a lumber company in North Ga “ Baldridge Lumber and Supply”. He is 87 now and the business has closed and his brothers have all passed on. All he talks about not is wanting a set up like yours . Do you have ANY idea where he can get one. He will have it picked up and pay cash. Please help. Thanks

All I would say is check around with old mills in your area they might be able to point you in the right direction. My uncle came across this one years ago. It wasn’t functioning at the time and it took some work to get it set up here.

I could watch this all day and very nice set up , How long does a blade like that usually last , What kind of wood thank you !

For us the saw will last for a while, we don’t run it much. Sharpen the teeth each time if needed. It does need to be switched now though. The wood is white pine, it’s soft so it cuts fine even though it’s dull
