Truth is the daughter of time. It’s deeply satisfying to think that this demure and pensive lady, with her rather wistful expression, at last has her true name and biography restored to her. Her life as such was brief and unremarkable, yet she inspired this minor masterpiece and it’s nice we get to pay her our respects, so many years after she died and was all but forgotten.

So very, very happy that you are continuing these ABSOLUTELY delightful rendezvous. They have made the quarantine more bearable. A thousand thanks. Mille fois merci!

Here l am again happy to see such beautiful ladies in costums according to the old times what l misse nowdays.I never understand how it is possible to paint in a way to bee quite alive.I had oppotunity in 1994 in New York one day to visite Metropolitan Museum and those Seaurgent Ladies I liked also very much and bought a Thomas Cool 1801 1848 The voyage of Life Childhood copy and I realised how much depends everithing not only the circumstanses but the will of god as well. Fascinating insight into art historical research within the museum context. I particularly like the way Xavier explains what is unknown rather than making assumptions. This is made crystal clear with the Beechey portrait but has been a theme throughout other presentations.

Great episode - it’s amazing how many work of art are hidden from our eye just because space in the main collections is limited. Beautiful portrait and little mystery story is highly intriguing. Cocktails with a Curator by Solomon is the most cherished program I encounter. Lockdown brought to us this style from different art collection and Frick museum does it better than anyone - edgy personalities are shining through narration every time.

In my college senior year album, my name was exchanged for someone else. And hers for mine. Now for eternity I will never be found unlike your lovely picture with the sad story. I do think though, I may be better off!

Rapture! You have not entirely abandoned us! You’ve become a rarity for me - an uncle far younger than I! Let me say, though, that I have trouble understanding why the portrait of Elizabeth Sophia was ever thought to be by Hoppner: the painting style is nothing like Hoppner's. Anybody who doesn't believe this need only make a copy (however imperfect) of a portrait head by Hoppner and the head of this Beechey. Van Aken possibly painted the drapery-apropos of which, the unfinished Haydn portrait was probably waiting for the drapery painter to begin, but he didn't.

I have started reading the Memoirs of Hadrian by Marguerite Yourcenar, in translation( 1955 edition), which you mentioned in an earlier talk . I usually read history only but this is an amazing read, so evocative and informative! Many thanks for the recommendation and an especial thank you for these marvellous talks.

Elizabeth Sophia Devisme married John Baillie (storekeeper office or Ordinance at Chatham) The citation below will give you the information you are seeking regarding the authenticity of the sketch. The painting itself was left in the will of Phillippa Devisme, (Elizabeth Sophia's mother) to her friend, Mrs. Clarke along with other valuable items.
