Salomon in sipping on a refreshing Daiquiri as he unravels the mystery behind one of the Frick’s exquisite bronze sculptures, “Shield Bearer” by Bertoldo di Giovanni. Xavier relates such fascinating stories around a work of art with context that would normally not be noted when viewing it. I wait eagerly for his next presentation like a child wanting the next bedtime story. Wonderful in every way. A Big Thank You.

I am really enjoying these weekly sessions. The information is always presented thoughtfully and in a very accessible manner, and the informality of the cocktail hour setting is very engaging. I have absolutely no background in art history and have found the series both entertaining and educational. Thanks for all of your efforts to produce this!

Of clurse!!!, forgive me!, but pre discovery of the most famous Greek statuary that inspired Michelangelo, etc.!!! I am so enjoying your historic overview. I am in love with figurative representation, (and missing my regular figure drawing from life in this covid portal.)..this was so inspiring. Thank you Xavier. I love seeing these postures borrowed and employed throughout history in narrative painting.

This lecture piqued my interest in the sculptor. As the curator mentioned, the website has a detailed information, including videos and tour, on the exhibit of Bertoldo di Giovanni's work.

Good points that they could have graced a high piece of furniture of some sort, perhaps some special collector's cabinet.

My diary indicates that I am in New York City, and that The Frick is the object of August 6th. Alas! The virus has me in quarantined in Victoria, Canada pursuant to a $1 million fine. Canadian dollars. 😊 OK. We hope to get to The Frick, when we may. Bless you for expanding our education before we can physically arrive in NYC. 🇨🇦

So much info, thank you! What are those goggles Julia Day has on? Are there Medici accounts that mention Bertoldo? If he died at Lorenzo's favorite villa, he must have been a much-beloved artisan. Also, small movable statues go way back to the Roman Empire (the Lares and Penares) and are popular even today in Neapolitan Christmas displays.

Are those masterpieces? The torsos are nice and the "accoutrement" looks ok. The face of The Fricke one seems kinda basic...not that finished. And the arms and legs are kinda meh. They're serviceable but they don't seem especially elegant or special to my eye. Like a little stumpy.

Maybe that's why Donatello and Michaelangelo got Ninja Turtles named after them but Bertoldo got omitted.
