#waraku #minifreak
We've not done one of these for a while I know, but since the Suzuki Waraku Digital Koto arrived from ebay, and we had the MINIFreak for review, we took the opportunity to make the unlikely paring.
Waraku going through the trusty Zoom MS-70 CDR and the MINIFreak is just internal FX.
As ever, we hope it inspires you to fire up a couple of synths and just have a jam.
Have a great weekend.

I was all into it and then he started tapping the percussion pads and it blew my mind. I gotta have one now.

Fantabulous. Beautifully played. The waruku(?) is so good (a set of samples from that would lure a few more patrons). The Minifreak was a very lovely assistant for this magic show (this jam, Stimming's video and Mr.Midi's are the best Minifreak demos).

I have an electro-acoustic version of what the Waruku's keyboard is modelled on (called taishogoto or nagoya harp). The keys are spaced this oddly because the original instrument has strings under them. Playing them kind of works like an inverted fretboard: pressing down a key shortens all strings and you can play monophonic melodies via strumming or typing. Has a very zitter-esque timbre but can sound excellent if you put a bit of work and pedals into it. Also doesn't sound like a koto at all.

You get to play with all the coolest toys. Nice jam, the drone worked well with the koto plucking, this combo could make a great video game soundtrack.

This was cool. I used to live in Japan and I remember seeing those types of things in shops. Now I want to hear more Japanese traditional music with synthesizers.

One second in...instantly reminds me of Crystal VST, which still sounds as good in 2022 as it did back 20 years ago when I first tried it.

Sounds awesome! Between this and the Roland Taiko-1 it's cool to hear traditional Japanese instrument sounds from the country that designs most of our favourite synths!

the stringed instrument part of that thing is called a taishogoto, which was invented in the early 20th century and is as you guessed a sort of household staple in japan. i have one without all the synth-y bits. the keys are spaced the way they are because they actually fret the string while you strum with your right hand (and yes you should have a plectrum to do that-- mine has one that's a bit bigger than a guitar pick). there are the four fretted strings where one is an octave down from the rest, and a separate drone string that doesn't get fretted. you generally avoid that string unless you're doing drone-y things. i wish the taishogoto had a pitch bend/whammy!

Lovely and interesting (as always). The odd key spacing is because these are, originally, stringed instruments and the keys serve to fret the strings in addition to exciting them into vibrating. Just imagine a guitar's fingerboard and the spacing of the frets. Thanks for your content and please keep up the good work!

I have seen people complain that the Mini sounds like a "toy", the Mini is something that needs an imagination to explore, it's all there for the taking, but you need to put in some time to see what it is capable of. It's all there on the surface too, no menu diving. People blame hardware purely because they're not willing to use their own imagination. Thx for the upload Nick, sounds fantastic.

Hey Nick. The weird key layout dates back to when Suzuki made earlier models with physical strings. The layout was a carryover.

Stunning sound!, from both, but the Suzuki is cool! could it be the groups of keys are per string? and number 5 button is the low 5th string for drone?

The taishogato was literally invented as a cross between a folk harp and a typewriter, by a music student on a scholarship visit to the west back in the early 20th century. I have an electric bass version that is gloriously fun to play.

Hi Nick, this is based on taishou-goto, aka. Nagoya harp. Which has nothing in common with koto.

I remember the synthfest video, and everyone wanting to buy it! This sort of thing is more interesting and fun than another analog keyboard synth. Too bad they don't make such nice string/synth instrument combos anymore... or maybe someone does, and it's not $5000?

3:50 - It's an electronic replication of a string instrument, designed for silent practice for the real thing. Also, that first U should be the second A. Waraku.

Yep. Hence the odd key spacing. Like a hurdy gurdy keyboard - because the stops get closer the higher you go.

What is that patch on the minifreak? Multi-octave pitch bends? Extremely cool! Edit: realizing now it looks like the macros tab-maybe an oscillator tuning macro?
