He amazes me how he can talk and paint at the same time. I find doing that is very difficult as it usually requires using both sides of the brain. His experience probably helps a ton.

Hi Jeffrey Watts. Thnx you so much for sharing the seemingly esoteric art of drawing/ painting with us. You embody the Joseph Campbell notion of artists that inspires culture and other artists. I am forever thankful for u sharing your knowledge. Thnx from South Africa.

the first 15 minutes and i can already see a really good likeness, a suggestion of a woman's face in the under painting/drawing in oxide red, almost reminds me of Chinese sumi-e painting, using negative space (or Ma as it is called in Japan) to achieve a seamless likeness by laying down very few strokes, that's a sign of a great artist who naturally knows the contours of the human face!

For an online tutorial, this is among the better ones. The artist is generous with his information. How much better it would be, though, if we could see what he is looking at as he paints. If he had taken a photo of his subject from his vantage point, and placed it as an inset down in the left bottom corner, we could understand better why he does what he does with the paint. I would like to see the image he is working from to see, as he works, how he interprets the shapes and colors and values of the model's face with color, mass and line.

Does anyone know what the stick he is holding with his left hand at 2:10 is for? My guesses are it holds down the easel with some weight (makes it less shaky) or it's just another way to keep both your hands involved, which is sometimes what I like to do. Personally, it gets me more into the art, instead of having one hand dangling down. Anyone know?

Its called a mahl stick. Used to steady the hand by anchoring the wrist and also prevents you from smudging paint

@@megindog6484 Yeah. I get why people are asking. Jeff's simplifying some things, adding others and removing some stuff to make it look better. If we don't see the reference, it's hard to know what he's doing to make the painting look better. I mean, as he said....artists don't draw an exact copy of the face, they do it so that people can see the face and feel something. Without any idea of the original, we won't know what's done to make the original better.

Unfortunately, although the painting is good, as is much of the advice, the intermittent stream-of-consciousness commentary is often exchanged for the real nitty gritty that beginners and improvers are looking to hear.. ie -what colours are you using for various passages, what mixtures at what strengths and combinations, what medium, if any, etc. This is a tad disappointing if one is giving valuable time to watch. For example, 'Just moving the paint around' is too nebulous a statement to help.

Great demo, but I doubt the sitter's hairline is so recessed nor the lips so enormous (like a child's). The lip septum appears 'off' as a result ... and the eye's cross-eyed. One way the art teacher could have 'caught' the errors would be to stand back a bit ... judging proportions, etc. ... OTOH, such anatomical errors oft make for excellent portraits with busy backgrounds ... where eyes and lips 'dance' asymmetrically a bit. Utmost blessings and thanks!
