I was surprised to hear Vini Reilly in an interview say that he wrote all the guitar parts on Viva Hate EXCEPT for Suedehead. Credit goes to Stephen Street. I feel it is the best intro of any Morrissey song, and ranks up there with “Stop Me..” and “How Soon Is Now”.

I was just going to listen to this CD I just ripped into my media player and I thought I would look up a documentary if there was one. There isn't so I was glad to find your channel and to see some of your insights into the album before I listen to the album for the hundredth ++ time as well. I agree fully that "Maudlin Street" is the standout track featuring somewhat avant rock music and a very interesting story with very memorable imagery (stealing jeans off of a clothline). I have always liked that hard edge the guitars this albums has, very nearly noise rock in it's harshness, reined in only by the low mix without which it would overtake the album. Anyway thanks much for the "review", I have subscribed and look forward to more insights into your record stacks. Since you didn't mention it specifically I would note that the sound effect that abruptly ends the last track is the Guillotine finishing off poor old Margaret Thatcher. As brutal of a political statement as you could expect Morrissey. I have just realized this post is 10 years old. No matter, Best wishes to anyone who reads this and give the album another listen even if it is the thousandth time. It is that excellent.

Great Morrissey album to focus and a great debut 3 track I like are Break up the Family, Everyday is Like Sunday and Late Night, Maudlin Street. Can't wait til you do the ranking of his solo that going to be killer. I agree Viva Hate not my favorite Moz but I pull out a lot of times within a year. My favorite album is Vauxhall and I then Your Arsenal Rad video Bret.

One of my favorite albums of all time. I bought it just before a trip to Baltimore (my homage to John Waters I guess). Spent three days walking around that crumbling, strange old port city playing Viva Hate over and over (and somehow survived in one piece). It meshed so well with that city's vibe. I doubt I'll every buy the reissue - I like "The Ordinary Boys" too much.

Talking about Morrissey Yeah! I was spinning "Revelation", a bootleg that was just recently reissued. Listening to it all day today. Love him or hate him, that guy can craft a song like nobody else! The phrasing of his lyrics just knocks me out. It was fun listening to songs I never heard before. Songs from Kill Uncle, Viva Hate, Southpaw Grammar and Bona Drag. Always great to hear you connect the dots with all the great people he was associated with. A two album deal! Now that is news I have been waiting to hear. Heard it here first on Friday on the Turntable, Got Your Arsenal on preorder! Mozapedia hahaha that makes me want to read, almost

I'm gonna have to look out for that 'Revelation' recording - sounds intriguing. When I first read Mozipedia - I skipped around and read each song entry in the book, as I listened to each song chronologically. It made for a really cool experience. If you ever come across a copy - definitely grab it! Can't wait for the Your Arsenal reissue! :) Thanks for watching! - Bret

I listened to it twice today and liked it better the second time. The jury is still out on the mastering and mixing, but this was originally a bootleg right? If that is true, I give it an A then www.soundstagedirect.com/morrissey-revelation-vinyl-lp-180-gram.shtml

Bret I got a cd on Friday of the Smiths Greatest Hits(!) to listen to in the car, recently I've been listening to a lot of Morrisseyswork and I hadn't realised to what extent the timbre of his voice has changed!, I have to say ( sacrilegiously) that for some reason I now prefer Morrisseyswork solo work - John

John, not sure if you know this but one of the few covers that The Smiths recorded was of a James song - What's The World. It's available on that Sound Of The Smiths collection that came out a couple of years ago - is that the one you have? Morrissey's solo work is excellent, so I can see how you'd feel that way. :) - Bret

Hey Brett, Would be great to see a video on your opinion of Mozzers Auto Biography. Like John I have also bought it and read it. Me and John have discussed it a bit here in the VC. It be good to here what your thoughts are on the book. Another great FONTT. There is a copy of 'Education In Reverse' in my local record shop and I am so tempted to buy it but it's 35 pound. Whilst it would be good to have I can justify it because I already 'Viva Hate'!! In regards to Steven Street I think it says that the Smiths where fairly reluctant to use Steve Street because he was a untested producer! Looks like the gamble paid of for them.

Deano! Gonna add a Moz Autobio review to the list - thanks for being interested. I hear you about 'Education In Reverse' - would be hard to drop that much cash on something differs from the regular version only in title. While it's totally cool, that money could probably go towards other new music. :) Street did a fantastic job on VH - it's always fascinating to think what the next album would've been like if they would have continued their collaboration. Thanks for watching, man! - Bret

Education in reverse was only released in Australia as Moz changed the title some were then recalled but some made it out, when I was younger (in my teens) I recall hearing that only 500 were released, I've since read that 1,000 copies were released. Either way it is rare so for that reason alone, in my opinion I'd buy it (I did back in 92). I've read on a forum that considering how rare it is it's surprising it isn't worth more ... I think amything rare by The Smiths will in time be worth A LOT. For the love of the band only I collected 220 Morrissey/Smiths vinyl records (12" and 7" singles etc). Just my opinion!

Hey Bret, what do you think of Moz's decision to sort of George Lucas-ize his back catalog? I love Moz but these reissues are driving me crazy. Thankfully, the "Your Arsenal" reissue will only have one sensible substitution (the US single mix of "Tomorrow"). Nice review of "Viva Hate." Can't wait to see your Moz ranking video!

I think every recording artist - including myself - would love to go back and fix what they consider 'mistakes' or 'compromises.' So with that in mind, I can see that side of the spectrum. As I was telling someone else... on one hand it's weird to hear a loved album in a completely different way - but on the other hand, it's cool to hear it in a whole new way... and at the end of the day, we can always go back to the original to hear it the old way. So, I am torn. :) But yes, super excited about the Your Arsenal reissue! Thanks for watching - glad you enjoyed it - Moz Ranking coming soon! Cheers! - Bret

Hi Bret, Nice to see you showing the greatest lyrical song writer in the history of music. I think I am going to do a follow up on this. I was very impressed as to how much you knew about Steven Street. Kind of sad that they are no longer close. He has criticized Moz publicly more than Moz bashed Thatcher. I think it started with the reissue of Viva Hate. Steven did not want Morrissey to alter 'Late Night, Maudlin Street" for the reissue or pull 'Ordinary Boys'. I agree with him. I think 'Treat Me' is a great song and by pulling 'Ordinary Boys' you are taking away from the original form. It is like editing Shakespeare's 'Sonnets. You just should not do it. Did the Beatles ever reissue Sgt Peppers with alternate tracks? Did you mention that 'Hairdresser On Fire' was omitted? Very thorough notes on the Viva remaster. Just to let you know, the 'Glamorous Glue' reissue from 2011 {the original was 1992} came out as an enhanced CD, picture disc 7" and pic cover/black vinyl 7". The pic disc included 'Treat Me Like a Human Being' which Moz added to the new reissue of Viva Hate like you stated. The alternate was 'Warm Lancaster Home'. Excellent job Bret. You really blew me away at how much you knew about Morrissey's history. Mozipedia, years of listening and seeing him in the balcony have payed off. If I was to bet I would say that he played a large part in your writing as well~ Rob/Boston

Hi Rob! I was gonna send you a message about this video's upload - but here you are almost immediately! :) I had this discussion - about the edits - the other night on FB. The truncating of 'LN,MS' is really disappointing for sure. As far as the re-imagined track listing... I see both sides of the coin. On one hand, we're so used to the running order of the original album, that it's definitely jarring to have changes. On the other hand, it's kind of interesting to hear the sequencing in a different light after so many years - and the way I look at it, I can always go back and listen to the original... but I definitely hear what you're saying. I really like 'Treat Me Like A Human Being' -it's nice to have that track made available to the public. I do believe I mentioned 'Hairdresser' only being available on the U.S. CD version - hopefully I didn't mix up song titles in the video!. Haha - I love how you remembered Morrissey in the balcony at that Placebo show! I remember that pic disc coming out, but didn't know about the inclusion of those two tracks - I will be on the hunt for the 7"! Thanks for writing, Rob. Would enjoy it if you did a followup on this for sure. Hope all is well! - Bret

Bret Helm's Life On This Planet Blog Very good analogy on the hearing the songs/sequencing in a different light. That is one of the things that pleases me for sure. I listened to Viva so many times I could probably sing each syllable in my sleep. So yes, hearing a different song in the order that we were so used to is a bonus. One more thing you may dig: Steven Street also played on a few of the tracks on the album 'Revelation' that Jimmy was talking about. You should check that out Bret because it has some essential demos that sound fantastic. It is not that expensive last I checked. Talk to you soon and thanks again~ Rob

Big Daddy! When are you chiming in about 'Revelation"? I have some questions about this album. The "Satellite of Love" (Live) came in the mail today, haven't had a chance to spin it, the turntable in my office does not play 45 rpm, can you believe it."You're Gonna need someone on your Side" "All You Need is Me" and "Vicar in a Tutu" on Parlophone, the disc weighs a ton. I know you are the King of Komments and welcoming many members, but the VC needs your expertise on these two new releases. Do I wait up all night for the video?

EarlofSuave308 Hello Jimmy~ I sent this over to you about 15 minutes ago. I guess I may have sent to Bret by mistake. Here is the exact comment that I thought I sent to you below: I would love to talk more about 'Revelation' and also the new single which I got today too from Amazon. The only issue was they put it in a 12" box and the plastic sleeve tour through the top and through the bottom. I wrote to them already because I am an anal Moz collector and everything has to look new. It must have been bouncing around in the box? Anyways, here is the comment that I sent to you now: I will talk more about the album in the morning Jimmy. I am beat. Thanks for getting in touch with me~ Rob Hi Jimmy, I just wanted to chime in and let you know that I enjoyed 'Revelation' for about two weeks when I first got it. It was great to hear you talk about it because many a Smiths and even Moz fan does not know of it's sneaky release. There actually was a Piccadilly Records that was owned by Pye Records but I hardly think that a legit record label would ever put out a bootleg. It amazes me too that Moz never tried to get these albums taken off the shelves. If if were just a run of 500 that would be one thing but it has sold quite a few copies. I was just telling Bret that Andy Rourke, Vini Reilly and Steven Street play on some of the tracks on Revelation. Question: Did you copy come in black or colored vinyl? I sent you a PM after your last video but I never heard back from you. Do you remember getting it? I can resend it if you want. Hope all has been going well Jimmy. I hope to hear back from you soon~ Rob It is so great seeing all of this Moz talk. Way to go Bret and yourself!

Don't you think Bret that this is one of the most depressing albums of all time? The mood reminds me what people lived back then: REM, The Cure, etc. We were trapped on a drama that helped creating such great albums. It's been said that melancholy is a path to creativity. You should do a show titled '80's and their drama'. You can include also Peter Gabriel there.
