In our latest episode, we're taking a look at the cult classic NES game, "Friday the 13th!" We get into the nitty gritty of why this game initially failed, and then was revived later on. Was that due to the game being lightyears ahead of other NES games at the time? Was it simply because Friday the 13th fans are so obsessive that they will take any form of more Friday, whatever that form may be? We'll get into all of that and more in today's video!

I grew up with this game. Still have it and play it often. I've defeated it numerous times and know it inside and out. But, no matter how much I play it and when I get that urge to do so, I still enjoy the hell out of it. :)

Moustapha Akkad really slept on getting a cheesy LJN Halloween game made. As a Halloween fan it irks me thatt after the haul the last movie made and the anticipation of 'Kills' that Halloween heads STILL have no Halloween game outside of the 2600 game.

F13 NES always played to me like a video board game or something. The map is kind of like a game board and it almost seems like you're going around it and encountering random events based on dice rolls and drawing cards. It's also borderline an open-world game considering that you can go to any area at any time and do things in whatever order you want. It's one of my favorites on the NES and probably isn't too far outside my list of all time favorites even considering the fact that I've only beaten it honestly one time (and that was by following a video guide and cheesing as much as possible).

An entirely open world game in NES era was unheard of. You have to keep in mind all the technological limitations of games at the time and see why the limited explanations helped keep the game as fresh as possible because you could finish the game in less than an hour. Which usually works in the game's favor since save files were a few and far between thing back then. But imagine paying full price for a NES game and finishing it in 45 mins.

Learn how to get the torch fast. Use Mark or Chrissy. Never fight Jason in a cabin, draw him out. Hunt him down. Speed runs take a couple minutes and can be executed without a crazy amount of practice.

LJN definitely had some stinkers but Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street and Jaws are the only ones I like. Friday the 13th isn't hard really. If you wanna pass the game in the simplest most effective way, use Mark, Crissy and Laura, for each time you kill Jason. They are the 3 fastest. Have one of those 3 get a lighter and light all the fireplaces. Always start with the 2 big cabins on the farthest edge on the west side of the map, then do the 2 big cabins by the cave, then light up the big cabin on the farthest edge of the east side of the map. Do this and the note in the big cabin in the far east side will always say: "There is a torch in one of the cabins by the lake". Then you go into the top right big cabin by the lake and you get the torch. You dont even have to light up the last fireplace. If you light up the fireplaces by the lake first then do the ones by the cave last, you're always gonna get the useless flashlight. After you have the torch, just go after Jason with the character who has the torch to kill him quicker when he attacks the kids or another counselor. On the next day, where you have to kill Jason again, repeat the lighting of the fireplaces with the next speedy character whether it's Mark, Crissy or Laura to get the torch again. You can have 3 characters with torches by the 3rd day. Another tip, if Jason is attacking one of the counselors. Go to the cabin with the character who has the torch, pass the torch to the other character, leave the cabin and leave that character in a smaller cabin. Then go back to the counselor getting attacked by Jason who now has the torch. Get out of the cabin so Jason appears in the side scrolling environment, and hit him repeatedly with the torch. This works especially better for the 2nd and 3rd times you have to kill him to avoid having to time Jason's attacks when he is fastest, especially on day 3. If Jason runs away, keep chasing him so he comes back and you light him up more with the torch. You can pass it this way so much faster. No need to go into the woods, no need to use George, Paul, or Debbie who are snails, nor beat Jason's mom for the pitchfork which does the same amount of damage as the torch.

People don't know that there is an incredible game program that Jason does travel on the road according to the map. There are times you encounter him at some point, but if you follow the road in the same direction as Jason is going, you'd encounter him more frequent.

It took me forever to figure out the trick to killing Jason in the NES game with ease. Basically any counselor other than Mark or Crissy sucks and is a waste of space ( only good to switch quickly too and hold off a death toll in a cabin) Get the lighter and circle the map, lighting fireplaces and end your journey near the upper left lakeside cabin. As you exit, theres the torch and you can kick the shit out of jason on all 3 levels. Just survive and you walk thru this in no time

9 solo entries? 8 F13 + 2 Jason = 10. Then the "vs" and the remake. Had a big love/hate relationship with the game. Sadly, had to use a Game Genie to beat it.

And yet like every kid had this game. It does have a spooky atmosphere, I'll give it that. And to their credit, doing a Friday the 13th NES game would be tough. Maybe like a top-down version of the later game that came out a few years ago. And each day you escape one of the ways you escape in the online game: repair a car and leave, repair a boat and leave, repair the phone and notify the police and escape on foot, and finally: you kill him. And maybe you have the counselors set up the same way as Ninja Turtles 1 did: you can swap between them at any time on the pause screen, and if all of them die: game over. I wish I knew a damn thing about programming, I'd love to see that game now 😁

I want to point out that James knows that LJN is just the publisher and not the ones who developed the games. He knwos full well that this is true, so don't go barrage his videos with snarky comments. Either way, as a publisher LJN still had a lot of control over the quality of the games, so don't let them off the hook entirely either.

I'm a huge AVGN fan and F13 was my first vid of his. James has mentioned a few times that LJN didn't create the games, but I Really didn't hear any snark or insulting tone from the creator of the vid. I'm not sure what you're referring to. I thought this fas a fair review of a game that was ahead of it's time. Cheers.
@camerondodge2070

@@steveharvey2102 No, I know. This was more directed at those who watch the video, then go leave those comments. Because that's just how it happens. One person corrects a little fact, and those reading or watching take that as the go ahead to be rude or downright awful to those corrected. Edit: Realized this can be misconstrued as well. What I meant was that even when the corrector is nice, and most times they are, people will go and do this to those corrected.

I know this is more a movie channel than a game channel, but saying "LJN was just the publisher they weren't responsible" isn't entirely accurate. They purposefully published quickly developed and cheaply made licensed products with the sole intent for pimping out the license for money. They could have said "no make this game better" but they didn't, they wanted product to put on shelves. Pardon the mini rant, love the channel lol
