Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan is a 1989 American slasher film written and directed by Rob Hedden. The eighth installment in the Friday the 13th franchise and a sequel to Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988), it stars Jensen Daggett, Scott Reeves, Peter Mark Richman, and Kane Hodder reprising his role as Jason Voorhees from the previous film. Set one year after the events of The New Blood, the film follows Jason as he stalks a group of high school graduates on a ship en route to New York City. It was the final film in the series to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in the United States until 2009, with the subsequent Friday the 13th installments being distributed by New Line Cinema.
Filming took place primarily in Vancouver, British Columbia, with additional photography in New York City's Times Square and in Los Angeles. At the time of its production, Jason Takes Manhattan was the most expensive film in the series, with a budget of over $5 million. It received substantial attention for its initial marketing campaign, featuring Jason Voorhees slashing through the "I Love New York" logo with a knife, which was later retracted after the New York City tourism committee filed a complaint against Paramount.
Released on July 28, 1989, Jason Takes Manhattan grossed $14.3 million at the domestic box office, making it the poorest-performing film in the Friday the 13th series to date. The film was panned by critics and fans for its plot and the humor, as well as a failure to live up to its premise, as Jason does not arrive in New York City until the final 20 minutes of the film. The next installment in the series, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, was released in 1993.

Cool reaction bro....Hey, it's Rick, (Gordon Currie) from Puppet Master 4 & 5, as Sean's (blonde) friend in this movie (he gets thrown & impaled by Jason with the weather vane/radio tower pole on the ship).

To everyone hating on this movie- y'all just don't get it. The orignal script took place in manhattan for 2/3s of the movie but the studio and producers kept slashing the budget to the point where the director was forced to abandon most of his original concept and make up things. Regardless of that its still a stellar movie. It has 4 iconic kills of the series (guitar face, hot rock smash, strangled and tossed, and head lost rooftop battle) as well as some of the most iconic scenes of the series (jason in times square, jason standing on the edge of the sinking ship looking badass, and jason looking at the hockey mask billboard), something most of the other movies cannot claim. Also, its the first to try a different setting and Jason on a boat makes way more sense than him in space or springwood or hell cause at least boats are tied to water and the man lives in a lake. To add to it, this movie gets the balance right- its scary in moments but funny in others and the characters don't suck nearly as hard as most in the other sequels, even going so far as characters deciding to fight back against the threat in the middle of the film instead of always just running and screaming. Also the boat scenes are very dark and claustrophobic and had the movie had a different title and been solely on the cruise ship the whole time, you could have had an ending where jason simply gets tossed into the ocean and the survivors get away, leading to a slew of great sequel ideas. Yeah the ending here sucks but it also sucked in the last movie, which is still a great movie regardless. No this isn't one of my favorites but still an amazing movie for all that it tried to do differently and for being brave enough to even try something different.

@@clarkness77 you can hate on it all you want but it is a good movie. The main issue is that people hate on this movie cause it’s trendy to hate on this movie. No one establishes criteria for things anymore. I guess it’s my own fault for being someone who actually thinks.
@potts9274

@@clarkness77 besides only the ignorant hate on things- look how much he was waiting for mccollugh to die simply cause that guy was a hater. At least if you established criteria you could name reasons why you don’t enjoy it as much as other films in the series but again, if you’re intelligent and using criteria, you’re not ignorant and hating on things.
@clarkness77

So if someone has a difference in opinion from your own that makes them ignorant. Gotcha. But I have a whole list. The dumb visions she has of Jason. Forgetful characters. Lame kills for the most part. Terrible final girl. Goes on way too long. The teleporting. This one's still a guilty pleasure for me but huge step down from the first 7. And agreed the ending is awful
@potts9274
@potts9274 Ай бұрын
@@clarkness77 there goes that ignorance again- naw if someone doesn’t establish criteria for what they don’t like and just hate on something for hating sake is what makes them ignorant. You can dislike something and disagree with people but their needs to be criteria behind it. I don’t care for the ending of this movie because the final girl barely fights back- she just mostly runs and screams. Also, neither survivors did anything to take him out- it was a result of ‘toxic waste’ which robs the characters of any agency or making them feel like true heroes. There are plenty of things to not like about this movie but see how having criteria shows off intellect while saying I just hate it without any just comes off as ignorant? Please learn something here. Or don’t. Your choice.

😄The directors for part 8 think a lake connects to an ocean, that you can find toxic waste in the nyc sewer system loll and that if you're running in time square(or anywhere in nyc), that you can easily end up in an alley or sewer. They also think Jason got deformed after he drowned. A good movie to laugh at if the directors know how off the board they were being and were doing it on purpose. I haven't seen this one in years and had to see if I still would rank it the same. The answer is yes. I still enjoyed your reaction, though so thanks!!

* Um....yea. This one's kind of difficult to help the director "Rob Hedden" make any kind of sense out of. The movie starts on "Crystal Lake". Which, I think I mentioned in a previous comment that the *"REAL"* Camp Crystal Lake is a campground called *Crystal* *Lake* *Wild* *Forest* near the hamlet of "Roscoe" in Sullivan County, and is in the southeast of New York state, but is Northwest of New York City. It's about a 2 and a half to 3 hour drive. * They kind of glossed over why Jason chose to stalk Sean and Rennie from the hamlet of Roscoe, to Kingston, NY so they could take that boat cruise down the Hudson River to the "Intrepid Museum", near "Pier 88", but for whatever reason, when they get there, they end up just making a B-line due east on 45th St straight towards Times Square, Jason stalking them as usual. I guess, to help out the director and writer a little bit, we are left to assume that Sean and Rennie(and presumably the rest) live in Roscoe, were camping out at Crystal Lake Wild Forest, but for some reason, cut their camping trip short, and got outta there before Jason could kill anyone. * You can understand how that's not gonna sit right with Jason. Heeeellll no. No, somehow he climbed onto one of their vehicles. Perhaps one of them had a pickup truck with one of those bedcovers, and he hid under that when no one was around. I don't know. You see why the director chose to gloss over all of that. Then when they got to Kingston, NY he would've got out after they parked and started walking toward the ship. While staying out of sight, and playing ninja, once Jason saw which ship they were boarding, that would've been when he jumped in the river, and stowed aboard. * The writer(who incidentally was also the director) was probably up until 3:30 a.m. after polishing off a 6 pack of beer, pondering on how he's gonna get Jason from Roscoe to Kingston, and obviously just decided to gloss over that, and not even mention the names of the towns, but Jason can teleport, like Michael(hey, another thing they have in common) and just happens to know which ship their going to get on. * So when everyone working on the movie asked Rob: "So what's this one gonna be about?" he said: "Oh....well, Jason's gonna kill some people and......but it's gonna take place in frickin' Manhattan babay yea!!! Woooooooo!!! It's gonna be the *TITS* man, I'm tellin' ya! That'll sell tickets. You'll see. Frickin' Ninja Turtles live in New York babay." and there you have it. "Jason Takes Manhattan". Real good right? Really impressive. Believe it or not, he continued to work in the filming industry after this. I have nothing else to say, because that last thought....just left me speechless.

I must have missed all of the mentions in the movies of where Crystal Lake is. But going by where they shot the movies, New York isn’t even on the list. California has the most screen time in the series by a wide margin.

@@toddjones1480 * Well...in truth, there is no "real" Camp Crystal Lake. However, out of ALL the lakes in the U.S. that are named "Crystal Lake", the one that fits the closest to what they show us in the films, and is also an actual camp that has a lake in it named "Crystal Lake", is the *Crystal* *Lake* *Wild* *Forest* in New York. Ya figure, it's gotta be somewhere in New York or New Jersey, but there is no real campground in New Jersey that even comes close, and since we have this film named "Jason Takes Manhattan", that kind of gives us a little bit of a geography, it gives us an idea of where Camp Crystal Lake is. * It would have to be either New York, or New Jersey, and since New Jersey has no place that even comes close, and New York has one that is basically dead nuts on(if you compare it to things we see in the films), then I would say that kind of narrows it down. I would encourage you and Jhyad to make a pilgrimage to "Crystal Lake Wild Forest" sometime. Perhaps next summer. Just make sure you plan it so that you get there on Thursday, June 12th, so that you can have a lot of fun the day after on Friday the 13th. Who knows what kinda shit's gonna go down. Maybe *YOU* could bring the hockey mask and machete. There's also been bigfoot sightings in the area.
