Friedrich Burgmüller, in Paris known under the French form of his name, Frédéric, was born in Regensburg in 1806, the son of the composer, pianist and music teacher Johann August Franz Burgmüller, and elder brother of the composer, conductor and pianist Norbert Burgmüller. Friedrich Burgmüller was taught by his father. After the latter’s death in 1824 he followed him as director of music in Düsseldorf, teaching music in Mühlhausen and as a cellist in Basel. In 1832 he settled in Paris, where he won a considerable reputation as a piano teacher, and internationally as a composer of salon pieces and studies. He did much to promote the work of his brother Norbert, four years his junior, whose career had been cut short by his sudden death at the spa in Aachen in 1836. Friedrich Burgmüller’s activities brought continued success in Paris. Many of his compositions proved successful among amateurs, for whom his pieces offered limited technical challenges, coupled with the satisfaction of musical interest. His Études (‘Studies’) have continued to provide a basis for piano teaching and the development of technical proficiency.

Over the past few months, I’ve gained a fascination with Burgmüller and his pieces. I’ve listened to all of Opus 109 and most of 100, but for some reason, this is my favorite of them all. I don’t know what it is, but I just find this piece fascinating. I’m in the progress of learning all of Opus 109 and this will definitely be the next one I learn.

This piece is beautiful! However, I prefer a slower rendition, as it allows me to savour each note.... Still a masterpiece.

I really like it too. Regarding the tempo I have respected the composer's metronomic indication (112) which seems to me to convey the idea of the "fileuse" well. Personal tastes, however, make the interpretation varied and I always appreciate different ideas. Best regards

@@FaustoBongelli Ahw! I didn't expect a reply. One of my friends from Russia played a slower rendition and it just stole my heart. There is just something about it. But I agree with you. The 112 does convey the idea of the fileuse well, which a slower tempo would not be able to. If you ever upload a slower rendition, I will definitely be the first to watch on loop.

I think great music can work in different ways and sometimes even I don't fully respect the times written by composers. I work a lot with contemporary composers and some of them appreciate this attitude (they are intrigued) while others experience it as a lack of respect for their ideas. The good fortune of playing pieces by deceased composers is that you do not have these problems and you are more free to express what music transmits to us. Hello

@@FaustoBongelli 3 years later and I finally got a piano... I will be practicing. Although I have forgotten most of what I have learnt, so I will have to practice a lot 😊 my fingers haven't touched the piano since around 2005.
