But the reaction from the audience for London scene was very high so they just thought this might be a thing! That's David Crane and Marta Kauffman said in reunion

The writers said in interviews that the episode, The One Where Ross Finds Out, is where the writers first got the idea of pairing Chandler and Monica after seeing their chemistry together. But at the time, they were still in the process of getting Ross and Rachel together and they felt that doing two couples would be too much and detract from the Ross/Rachel storyline they were developing, so they decided to shelve the Monica/Chandler idea and see if they could come back to it at a later time. This is why they teased Monica and Chandler during the episodes, “The One at the Beach" and “The One with the Jellyfish," where Chandler keeps offering to be Monica's boyfriend. The idea is that they were setting up Monica and Chandler's tryst in London in advance, but it is also true that they were originally planning on it being just a one-night stand that they would decide was a mistake. But after the audience reaction they got, they decided to let it continue and see how far it would go. But it is true that the Friends writers did first get the idea to pair Monica and Chandler from their interactions in this episode, and they even admitted it in interviews. You can Google it.

The drugs, originally from a car accident, and alcohol addiction made Matthew Perry balloon up in a few seasons. 3-5 I think? It's the seasons Perry doesn't remember at all. Then he got pancreatitis and lost 20 pounds. This is from Season 2 so he probably is decently fit in real life.

You know, that's true. The baggy clothes made his shoulders look thin, so I love the alternative of Phoebe suggesting he wasn't muscular/manly enough. Come to think of it, she also could have commented, "every time MY hips/boobs get bigger..." That would play into a number of his neuroses!

Potentially driving someone into a depression because of a (in this case) joke on the weight (they both knew that he wasnt overweight at the point, if he ever was to beginn with) is certainly not cool. So year, that part was pretty dark for me too. Chandler could have just said he is finished with sports for now and left, but now, he chose the cowards way and made his friend feel terrible instead. @@jj_177

That thing you don’t have that Monica has is mental discipline. If you can wake at 5am to workout when your body has been conditioned to wake up later for other activities that is a sign of mental discipline

He gave her a few chances to walk away and she started attacking him on his weight. He didn’t even want to work out with her at first. I don’t really have sympathy for her. It’s not like he wasn’t clearly sensitive about his appearance.

Exactly! It was really manipulative of him. He used her insecurities against her. I still love Chandler though. He is the best character for me.

yeah but he gained weight that season bc he was drinking. that was the worst of his alcohol addiction. so it would really insensitive to make his weight a plot of an episode when the reason he was heavier was bc he had a major alcohol addiction

I mean, all he did was call her jobless and alone... She literally called him a fatboy like 2 seconds before that, which is something she used to be sad about at a point. I guess it's not problematic if the other person isn't visibly hurt 🤷
