I think not only is Frieren realizing that she misses Himmel, she realized she did know more about him that she thought and she's re-contextualizing her memories of him, and in turn, learns to appreciate the times with him more than she thought before.

Frieren, above all else, reminds me that I need to make time with my parents while they're still in good health. I've been out of school for a decade but it doesn't feel that long ago. I'm afraid I'll blink again and suddenly dad's too old to get a leg over a motorcycle or my infant daughter will be too old to want to be picked up and kissed on the cheek when I get home.

Reading and then watching Frieren completely occupies my mind with the concept of time. The last third of my life has just flashed by, I'm not in my twenties anymore and I can feel it every day.

7:37 the piano outro from “A Sunrise Worth Seeing” is probably my most favourite OST music I’ve heard in a long time. It plays 3 times (that I can recall) obviously first during the sunset in episode 4, but just the piano outro plays in episode 10 when Flamme tells Freiren about the spell to make flowers and again in episode 27 when Himmel recounts Freiren casting the spell in the forest when he was a kid. Such a beautiful piece of music tied to such emotional moments in the show

And here comes Aoex yet again delivering a review of one of my favorite piece of entertainment. Great review as always. This anime is phenomenal, I was already a huge fan of the manga and this adaptation overshone it so much, the presentation with the beautiful animation, music and voice acting really elevated my enjoyment of it. Between this and the adaptation of Apothecary Diary, it probably made this season my favorite, like, ever. Even though I pretty much only watched those 2 animes which I already read in manga form. It just shows how enjoyable those adaptations were and I'm really glad a lot of people seem to like them as well. Keep up the good work man :)

I think Frieren makes it pretty clear that one should be happy it happened, not sad that it is over. It's about using the time and enjoying every moment, not dreading what is lost by its passing. Frieren had shut herself off to avoid this pain. Himmel made her realize she was missing something that was worth the pain.

The mage exam arc actually did a great job giving solid character growth and depth for most of its important side characters, like Lawine and Kanne's belligerent relationship, Ubel being a genuinely interesting subversion of the typical sociopathic character archetype, Denken being awesome, and Wirbel being another interesting subversion in a longstanding character archetype. Even Richter has some interesting depth to him and we got Serie's scenes which are always a treat.

The anime genre of frieren is slice of masterpiece. I'm cooked and totally evangelized by this serie, I feel every episode has personal, sharing everything with them and damn that was so deep that i dont have words to say how much this anime is special. For me easily one of the best animes ever maded and has potential to be much more, only season 1 already have launched him at the top tier masterpieces of the industry, if the quality keep the same in the season 2 it will spetacular.

If I had a nickel for every time time both me and Aaox loved a high fantasy work that deals with the aftermath of a classic JRPG party defeating the final boss and the heartwarming, romance-filled adventures that come with it, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

The tragic aspects of frieren are balanced by the hope. The show may be thoroughly bitter, but it is the same bitterness of bittersweet chocolate. You can appreciate the delicate flavors, or you can dwell on the bitterness. It isn't "boo hoo I lost him," but "wow, look at all the things I did with him." (Partly through the mature view of young love)

exactly, its not a traumatized experience you drown on sadness but the hope and the worth of living to had this good feelings pay the price for the pain.

Things you care about being harder to talk about is cuttingly true, I'd wager most people have a project that they hope to make some day because it means a lot to them, but never get around to as you never feel you have the right words/skills to do it justice...

I was afraid the tournament arc (that's basically what it is) would be detrimental to the series and boring (I hate tournament arcs, but then again, I don't like shounen anime in general), but no: it proved tremendously instrumental in character portrayal and development, including helping us understand very cool side characters like Denken, Übel, e Wirbel. ZORUTORACKU!!!

At the end of your "Bocchi the Rock" review, you mentioned that this series was next (It wasn't, you ended up doing "Scott Pilgrim" next, but that's perfectly reasonable.) and I just was wondering: Did you know both series have the same director, Keiichirou Saitou? He was at Anime Expo last week for panels on both shows, and to no one's surprise he's as shy about himself as Bocchi is and as aware of time as Frieren is becoming.

Frieren is a weird series to me. I've really loved the first handful of episodes, but the realization of the destination being just another fantasy trope has been seeping my enjoyment out of it somewhat. As you've said it's about the journey, not the destination, but I've loved the slow intimate moments, and when I've hit around the episode 8-10 I've suddenly lost all interest, with the introduction of boring one note villains. I need to pick it up again, hope the focus stays on the main cast, and not some boring generic fantasy stuff. As for the video, once again great work. I keep recommending your stuff to people I find online, you deserve more views. I'm not saying this from a fan wanting to share experiences point of view, but rather I believe, in the current overcrowded video review/essay landscape, it's really rare to see something this well written and concise. Thanks for making these, cheers

This series was weird to me also. I started watching it on episode 17 and above, and then went back to watch it from the beginning. A friend of mine recommended the manga to me years ago, but i thought it was boring. Now? Its one of the best series ive read

Ha. How so. Sure the demons may not be your cup of tea, but when you made it to episode 10, you should have pick up that it is important for how Frieren came to the way she lives and why she at times is apathetic and so on. Being disgusted by witnessing "tropes" repeating seems strange, especially since Frieren takes many of them and puts a twist spin or subversion on it, or if you expect the subversion it plays it straight like the original. So yeah Frieren is weird, but then shouldn't you be fine with it.

@@syafri88 Probably because it gets way better overtime. This is a storyline that takes place after a 10 year long journey. So we the audience won't be much invested in beginning because of the lack of context. As the series goes on we learn more about himmel and his party throughout frieren's memories and other characters. I tried reading frieren manga in 2021 after reading 20ish chapters I thought it was very average and didn't continue at that time. In 2023 I decided to give the anime a chance since the visual was very good and honestly it was a masterpiece. The great scenery, animation and music intensified the experience and I understood the incredible journey frieren had with her previous party. After finishing the anime, I binged the manga all the way up to the latest chapter 130 and honestly it's now one of my all time favorites. Can't wait to see El dorado and goddess monument arc being animated if adapted correctly it will easily surpass season 1 in every way. Also so many incredible characters in this series A lot of characters get there own moments to shine
