Its such a simple concept of hiding your power level that it feels weird for an anime to treat it with such wonder and importance but it crafted a world where it works so well.

What I loved so much is that the creator gave reasons for why demons cannot conceal their power, in order to gain status and a following to begin with and likened it to humans treat status based on wealth and bloodlines, which also makes fun of how our ways seem silly. Even here, they bring up its not as if demons cannot tell when people suppress their mana. For Flamme's strategy to work the user needs to be very skilled so they don't reveal discrepancies within the mana to give it away to demons. Even strong mages need years of training to pull this off and even then for this prove worthwhile the mage must than build up their overall skill and mana to still be decently strong to capitalize on it. The demons can be taken off guard, but if the mage is fairly weak in comparison that is not going to help as much. It explains why most mages concerned with trying to kill the demons are probably focusing on spending their time building up their power.

Frieren is the one that popularized zoltraak as a regular offensive spell. We don't know how old Frieren is, we just know she is older than 1000.

and at the same time we know that she can't be much more than 1000 because as she said it herself in this episode, she has been suppressing her mana for the better part of her life, so she met Flamme during the "early" years of her life.

FYI, the zoltrak spell was researched by Frieren and it was said a few episodes ago, that she advanced understanding of the spell a lot since her Hero's party days. That is, it didn't get told about to other mages back in Flamme's time as it was not invented yet.

There's only a single handful of episodes that have made me genuinely speechless, and the day this aired, it immediately made it to said hand. We all knew how it was gonna end, but the way it was built up over the course of the entire episode made it truly special. I'm a sucker for really good build up, even more than its pay-off in some cases, because a pay-off wouldn't even hit half as hard if it weren't for its build up, and I haven't seen build up this good in a loooong time before this

I wish I was able to experience it like that, but unfortunately every single reaction channel that was watching live at the time used the image of Aura cutting her head off in their thumbnail, so my feed completely spoiled the ending. Love the breif talk about Douglas Adams. He had a writing style that no one else has been able to replicate. I highly recommend Last Chance To See his nonfiction book about looking for endangered species. "We asked, tentatively, if we could perhaps take a snake bite detector kit with us to Komodo. "'Course you can, 'course you can. Take as many as you like. Won't do you a blind bit of good because they're only for Australian snakes." "So what do we do if we get bitten by something deadly, then?" I asked. He blinked at me as if I were stupid. "Well, what do you think you do?" he said. "You die, of course. That's what deadly means.""

this episode also give another reason why she now loves to learn simple and "dumb" spells, yes part of it is because of Himmel, but i think part is also about Flammel. Frieren and her master spend most of their life learning magic for the main reason fo killing demons. but now that the demon king, the biggest and worst of all them, now she can understand why that flower spell was ther master favorite: because it give her a conection to her love ones, the same that those "dumb" spells in a way give Frieren a connection to Himmel

While the idea of mana suppression is a pretty simple power scaling concept I do really appreciate the small nuance that makes this implementation special. While anyone can do it and thinks of it as a possibility in combat, any significant suppression is relatively detectable by other trained mages. (though it can still be used to make your exact power somewhat more uncertain) So mana suppression as a skill truly is useless in most cases because the sheer time and constant effort required to master it to a useful degree is not only out of reach for humans, but also a waste of time and effort for anyone else generally. As spending that time to get stronger mana instead gives you a greater benefit to magic than using that same effort to suppress it. But for the show, mana suppression being an actually useless skill (rather than just giving it lip service) is what makes it an effective tool for the few people who have the will and time to practice it.

Mana hiding is basically frowned upon in battles because it is about catching your enemies off guard, like stabbing them in the back while they are resting instead of facing them head on where both will be prepared to dodge and have a fair fight.

I believe when Himmel was chastising Frieren on her flashing spells to defeat Aura's puppets, he was probably trying to get across to her that these were trapped souls of humans that should be treated with more dignity.

7:03 Zoltraak came from Qual, the Elder Sage of Destruction, whom Frieren confronted with the party of Heroes almost 90 years ago, after which FRIEREN led the research and understanding of his unique killing magic to usher in a new era of magic for humanity. This was LONG after the death of Flamme...

Himmel wasn't scolding Frieren's flashy spells because it showed off her power, he scolded her because those flashy spells DESTROYED the controlled bodies. He felt Frieren had disrespected all the people Aura had killed. So Frieren chose to dispel Aura's control this time, because she figured that Himmel was right and she needed to be kinder to all those corpses.

I'm glad you guys are enjoying the show a lot more tho~ Some of the things like Zoltraak being a way more recent spell is already explained by other commenters, but I wanted to add to what Calvin said at 11:39. Himmel did not berate Frieren for using flashy Spells because it showed how strong she was. It was because Himmel still respected the Humans that were controlled by Aura, who never fully passed on and are still in this zombiefied state that they can't escape. When Frieren used those flashy spells she made them suffer more in a sense, atleast that's what Himmel thinks, so this time she just broke Aura's control over them, so they could move on to the afterlife. Atleast that's how I interpreted all that.
@jakisinnynick
@jakisinnynick Ай бұрын
I don't think it was about them suffering more, they were already beheaded in order to remove all of their will. I interpret it as Himmel's objection to desecrating the bodies and not showing them respect they deserve. But the sentiment is the same

Great discussion, guys! It feels like the entire episode was just a build up to Frieren saying KYS but it's worth it. We get more lore about demons and flashbacks of Flamme and Frieren. I like how Aaron compared her training to the gravity room. Frieren was training to get stronger while also having this weight of controlling her mana output all the time. Must have been tough to learn but it pays off. Aura could not detect any fluctuation in Frieren's mana. I personally love that added detail of Aura being able to observe minute changes in someone's mana. Of course she probably trained herself for that. She has to. If Frieren didn't do this for 1000 years, Aura could very well have found out. Also... For such a short screen time, Aura is one of the most popular characters in this anime. She got memed on.

I disagree. The dialogue is wordier than it needs to be and kind of dumbed down too. The way they changed Heiter's line about how much mana Freiren had was unnecessary, doesn't fit his character and comes off like it was done because they thought the audience was too stupid to understand why Freiren would feel insulted by what he said so they had to change it to a straight up insult. There've been other times where they've changed the dialogue and it changes the nature of what the person is saying. The first episode was probably the worst when they changed what Freiren said about not getting to know Himmel better. They way the sub had it emphasizes Freiren's perception of how ten years is such a short amount of time to her. Which fits her character and the theme of the show. The dub makes it seem like it's about Himmel being so inscrutable that 10 years was too short for anyone to get to know him. Which makes no sense for her to say it that way.

@@meursaulty6672 That's only true in some instances. There were several scenes in this episode, and previous ones, where you couldn't even see the characters mouth, or where you could only see the persons mouth for about half of the time they were talking, and they still made the dialogue longer than the sub. That's what I mean when I say it's wordier than it needs to be. The "needs to be" part is taking into consideration having to match the mouth movements.
