Sousou no Frieren has been at the top of MyAnimeList since it came out, but will it stay at the top, or will it drop like every other series before it? That's what we will be talking about in this video!

I'd love if it stayed at number 1 too. As a manga reader, I can confirm the narrative manages to mantain its master piece level through out the different arcs. And still, the anime feels even greater thanks to the amazing music by Evan Call and the amazing animations and illustrations in the show (the rhythm, the expressions, the longer fight scenes, the colored scenery, the small but amazing and realistic details such as clothes and hair moving...). The sum of all of its parts is something that I can't even describe, and I hope it gets a lot of recognition, not only because it deserves it, but because that would also mean it can cause a snowball effect and thus, it might reach more and more people so they can enjoy this.

I think FMAB is ranked so high because it's complete. You get to experience a whole lot of emotions and thrills while having great animation and story and most important of all is its CONCLUSION. It maintained its brilliance until the end and Frieren already gave us great story and animations and made us feel all kinds of emotions so only thing left for it to cement itself as top 1 is its conclusion.

In theory if the author really wanted to he could make another series that focuses on Frieren traveling with Fern and Stark's kids, assuming they will have some, so on and so fourth. Kinda like how Mushoku is going to have a light novel spinoff with Rudeus's descendants fighting Man God. Another series that would be interesting to see is the original journey Frieren and the Hero party had.

My issue with fmab is the absolute ADHD tonality from one scene to the next. Like if it took the 03 anime and filled in the missing blanks for me it would be perfect, that adaptation actually gave room to breathe and did it in a very short amount of time. I would not recommend it beyond those that wanted to find out what the manga did but at that point I would just rec the manga. At least it's more consistent. I still don't get how brotherhood is number 1 though.

Two weeks later : Frieren is scored higher (9.16) and by more people, Imo definitively topfive even if it drops and depending on what the story will give us in the last episodes I'd have some hopes it stays number one.

FMAB is very good but in my opinion it is not first place good. Frieren is really hitting all the right places for me. Especially the way the story incorporates flash backs. I hate flash backs but in Frieren they are well timed and add to the current story.

I can’t say after it ends if it will still remain #1. I do think it will continue to stay high in the charts though. Like #2 or within the top 5 or 10. I don’t think it’s gonna drop drastically like other seasonals. I think it has lasted this long because the MAL audience must see it as a worthy and lasting series. I think Frieren honestly deserves #1.

They can be a personal favourite yes. But there r too many factors in having a favourite anime like nostalgia and preferences. They don't understand tht no. 1 just means it's just the more popular one and the avg score is just very high. Some of which is coz of hype. Over time more will watch and tht score will slowly drop and after another decade another anime will take over the no. 1

@@ethangomes336 I don’t know if MAL will go another decade with one anime reigning like FMA. That was because MAL was born out of the 00s fandom and a lot of people did actually consider FMA the best out of all the popular anime at the time. That’s part of it being #1 on MAL for 15 yrs with FMA and later FMAB taking the spot. (Also, other anime have gotten the spot as well. See Ember Reviews video on MAL if you’re interested in MAL #1 anime history.) The reason why FMA remained #1 was because the other anime in the top list had one or two many factors to drag the score down with the majority of viewers. Like Steins; Gate beginning first half for many and not everyone wants to see AOT carnage. HxH is great, but also there are mixed opinions on Chimera Ant arc. Chimera Ant is a large chunk of HxH 2011. 60 episodes or so. Gintama is seemingly amazing to the people who have seen it, but not everyone has seen Gintama and not everyone in the western fandom can relate to the humor since it’s Japanese and also very set in the time it released using references for much of the humor. Some fans find it easier to watch the most current Gintama to connect more with the humor so they’re not left trying to connect and understand to 2000s era humor. Within 00s fandom though, Gintama was and always has been very popular. That’s another reason it tops the list and appears so much. Gintama fans have always had their corner of the fandom. I think it’s possible now that FMA fans have grown up (are adults), things within the MAL top anime may change. Another may reign supreme like FMA again, but it will take more time to find that one. I don’t think it will happen right away and I don’t think it will last as long as FMA franchise either. A lot of fans are convinced FMA fans are the reason for #1 spot and mainly that the win is illegitimate (won through gaming the system), but I’m not convinced that’s the case for #1. Plenty of other fandoms on MAL do this. It is not only FMA. Yet they are not #1 despite all the efforts to take the highest spot. I also don’t believe the FMA fans would have such a power if there weren’t modern fans who came to love the series and contribute to how widespread the anime has become. As for the reasons for seasonals taking #1 and falling shortly after. I’m unconvinced this isn’t just the anime being hype in the moment getting high scores because not many have watched it at the start and then falling shortly after when more people do watch and the score naturally falls like every anime does on the MAL platform.

In my opinion, I'm not sure frieren would stay #1 forever but will stay the special space in my heart. One interesting phenomena in Japan is that many 50s-60s non anime fans are watching frieren. Generally speaking these generations tend to have experienced loss of their close person or start to concern how they end their lives. For them, frieren is the anime that they can related to and reflect on. Frieren is not just a seasonal anime to consume but where you come back again and again on milestones of life.

I don't think anything should stay at the top forever. There are too many different genres and styles for me to agree that any one show is "peak anime". It's about time that something replaced FMAB, but I wouldn't like the next several years to be just one show either.

While it's true that review-bomb exists from part of the FMA community, people often forget that the opposite is true as well. FMAB is one of the most review-bombed anime on the platform. If Oshi no Ko stands at a 1.3% rate of 1/10, and Frieren 1.8%, FMAB has a 2.4% of 1/10 (despite only 0.2% of 2/10). If we look at sheer numbers, it's even more spectacular, FMAB having almost literally 10 times the amount of 1/10 than OnK has. (~50k vs ~5k, with only ~3k 2/10, so really not something natural). Review bomb exists on the platform, from all communities. Also, MAL declares that they have algorithms filtered out review bombing when establishing the ranking. If we accept that a specific anime "lost its place because of review bombing", then we must acknowledge than FMAB kept it despite one of the most intense review-bombing on the platform.

Frieren's narrative is unlike any other anime I've seen in recent times. There aren't any plot armors (Demon Slayer - battle with Daki) or out-of-storybound plot twists (AoT people can change into Titans?). Frieren has good lessons about the values of life and isn't tarnished with battles that are just explosions and screaming. Battles are intelligent with clear objectives and thought out plans. Characters are different and well developed. Even one-episode characters have a lot of flavor. Flashbacks aren't just sob stories or references to "the power of friendship;" they're actually used to juxtapose Frieren from the past and Frieren in the present. Frieren has really good storytelling with every character having their own objectives and personalities, and each character interacts with one another in a real way with realistic outcomes.

That jump is likely due to some voters waiting until the end to score. Causing the score to go from 9.18 -9.39 over night seemingly. It still remains to be seen what will happen next. Though, yes, so far, I’m happy to see Frieren ascending so high. I’m still hoping for it to succeed and stay high in the list. To join the other more permanent anime in the top.

I get liking FMA, but Brotherhood was a flawed adaption, at least towards the start of it. It doesn't deserve to be number 1 if you're counting the abridged parts the manga already covered. Frieren though? Absolutely no compromises in it's production. It nails both the vibe and the pacing and that's rare to see in anime where episodes are a premium to produce.

If it can survive in the number 1 spot till the final episode I think it has a 50/50 shot of dethroning FMA:B permanently, but if it does drop I don’t see it leaving the top 5 for a long time. Frieren is peak fantasy anime and anyone who shrugs and gives it anything below and 7 is lying to themselves and the people who are giving it a 1 are delusional FMA fanboys. I really hope Frieren represents the future of anime going forward.

As a manga reader, the last few episodes to be released will cover relatively climactic and hype-y chapters, concluding the whole first class mage exam. And judging by how the anime has been going so far, it seems that they slightly dropped the animation quality at around ep 14 (or the one where Sein was first introduced), so they could save up the animation budget for these last few episodes. So I'm expecting the anime will end really strong - the source material is already there, and it's already amazing. It's just a matter of adapting that bit into the anime.

04:52 Granted MAL isn't beholden to Japanese production commitees, but from what I've gathered about how anime is produced, technically you don't have x seasons of gintama (or some other long running series) but x number of shows that "happen" to share same name. And season numbering. That's why they couldn't be lumped together. Or something

I just watched this now more than a week after it ended. Totally agree with you, also on the part that there will probably be quite a big drop right afer it ends because of people ranking it and thus it might drop out of #1. Except... it went UP. And by a lot, it was around 9.15 the whole tim, and now it's at 9.39... I don't think a show EVER reached that on MAL and Frieren did it AFTER the hype period of when the show is airing. I think it's safe to say now that, after nearly 14 years, FMA:B has been dethroned, and there is a new #1 anime.

the initial wave of reviews is more positive because it's from fans who closely follows frieren release, more and more casual viewer will watch the final ep later and gave it their score. that said, frieren got such a huge gap over FMA i think it will take a pretty long time for FMAB to get back on top if ever. for reference even if the rest of the member 400k ish voted 9 it will still sit at 9.14 ish.

Most anime shows, even the good ones, you only watch once. It is an experience. However, Frieren is more than an expierence. Like the Lord of the RIngs, you can watch Frieren multiple time. Because this anime has _layers_ unlike many others. Every rewatch reveals something different you didn't notice the last. That is why Frieren has been the topic for so many video essays before it is even done airing! Also, the behaviour of the characters stay the same, even thorugh change. When you rewatch, the behaviours Frieren and Fern do stay the same episodes before the flashback on the reason why they actually do those stuff. You can be like in episode 3: "Oh, so that is why Frieren acts this way!" because the explanation was in episode 18. It's not like there is this situation where the character changes and a flashback pops up to justify it because they're lazy. That is what makes a great anime seperate from other greats, because it has _layers_

I believe that frieren is #1 because this rank is his base level at all. But will drop because it's a adult anime that touch themes for adults that already lived for time enought to understand the message. Full metal and the other are top tier but the public it'' a little mor teenager and anime basically are consumed for tennagers and young adults so it is just a question of time to drop, drop because of the public who watch it will dont care about the message until get hooked by this anime..

You definitely have a point here, but I think that the show is pretty versatile so there may be hope. It has a little bit of everything in it like comedy, drama, action, etc. and I believe that it does those things well. Because of this, anyone can probably find something that they like in the series. Also, in the end it is about a group of adventurers who go around fighting demons and destroying monsters, which seems perfect for the younger audience.

Go ahead and check it out. The general fans are kinda stupid, but’s genuinely fantastic. I read the manga, and would recommend it.

One piece is my favorite anime and manga of all time deathnote is probably 2 and even still frieren deserves number 1 genuinely perfect imo.

So I am loving Frieren and it's my fav anime of the past few years, however I don't think it truly deserves the number 1 spot until we get the ending. So far I do believe it's better than FMAB, but until it is complete I don't think it can hold that top spot. Endings are so important and we have so few anime that actually have an ending let alone a good one. That's just my opinion tho. I can't wait for future seasons.

0:41 Haven’t seen Oshi no Ko. It may be an incredible show. One I probably would enjoy immensely. Though of all the anime to reach high in the charts, I don’t think #1 to #55 is impressive. Your Name was a movie that reached the top of the MAL chart as well and even after it dropped, it was still #16 like a year or two later. Before that, I think it was closer to #4. Even 8 years later (that really has me feeling old) the movie is still #27. A Silent Voice came out the same year and is also still at #17. Both movies are even higher in the popularity chart on MAL. #11 for Your Name and #20 for A Silent Voice. Oshi no Ko dropping that much in a single year has me thinking it will likely drop even further. It’s at #55 now, but I can see it dropping into the hundreds or further down as the years pass. 4:41 We could definitely use some new blood at the top considering it’s been practically 15 years of FMAB being on and off #1 abs even before that #1 was still held by 03 for a while. Ember Reviews did a great video on the history of MAL rankings if anyone is interested.

For a lot of people FMA is their first anime they got into so thats why its rated so high im assuming. Frieren is this generations new standard for story telling and action. Shonen animes are becoming kind of more of the same with action scenes determining if its a good anime or not. Frieren is a good all around anime but may not be for some because it takes it time. Most of the new anime heads just want flashy fights.

The toxicity from FMA fans over their anime being #1 is disgusting. Mass review bombings of anything that surpasses it is a regular occurrence. And I'm someone who loves the show btw.

Oshi no ko had one of the best opening episodes (films?) of any anime ever. Then the rest of the season aired which averaged at like a 8/10. Oshi no ko also got carried by the most popular anime op ever. Frieren had one of the best set of opening episodes (not as good as oshi no ko, may i add) but then maintained the quality. I do however think that the show will suffer due to the heavy drop in the shows pacing. The first cour spanned multiple years. We've now had 8 episodes on the first class mage exam arc; and the last 2 episodes were spent on the cast talking about how they were going to get past a single obstacle in the 2nd test. There are only 3 episodes left, and they still have yet to finish the 2nd test. I personally like the pacing, but I do not expect everyone to feel this way.

Anyone who votes it below 9 hasnt seen the last few episides and the conclusion of the 2nd mage exam test. My anime knowledge isnt as extensive as some, but has anyone EVER rendered magical fight scenes as intricately and as awe-inspiring as the ones we just saw? I mean, singularity spawning dimensional vortexes, spontaneous rock golems with magical amplification and reflection, and whatever the fuck she hit Fern with at the end? The magic on display is graceful and brutal, elegant and fantastic, and utterly breathtaking.

Fmab is my fave anime, has been for 5 years. but i also love frieren i started reading it when it was just a manga, it was an amazing read and i am still waiting for more chapters

If it drops I can finally stop wondering about whether it'll drop or not, and then I'll give that brain slot to something else. For all the years I've been keeping my stupid anime list updated (wow, imagine if I just stopped), I've never really paid attention to the top list, and I'm not really sure if I even knew FMAB was #1 before Oshi no Ko temporarily knocked it off. Still, it's kinda nice that LOGH has stayed on there for so long. (Actually not sure how long LOGH has been ranked so highly, but it sure was a popular retro anime to like 14 years ago.) Never mind, there's a screenshot from 2010 right there in the video.

I think most of the FMA fans on MAL have grown up and probably stopped watching Anime or caring about the FMA's ranking on MAL. They clearly voted up FMA over the last view years with bots and voted down other shows.

The Apothecary Diaries might rival Frieren if they have a season 2 or 3 going on. It definitely worth to be top 10 imo after reading the novel ever since. Probably the best 2 female MC ever made in recent years.

Frieren storytelling is Just.. . Amazing. If something legitimately able to take it out. It should be something newer and better. Not old king that has been in the position since the mythical era. It has been so long since new anime become the new standard

Even if it does drop ranking over time, I think Frieren will manage to stay in the top part of the list, and I don't see it drop as "low" as Oshi no Ko. OnK #1 place was mostly due to the hype from before the airing, and from its first episode, with stats that made very few sense, even for members of the Top10 TV series, with a top at 66% of 10/10 after the airing of its second episode while other Top10 series had an average between 45% and 48% at that time The drop in ranking over time was mostly due to the drop of percentage of 10/10, in favor of 8/10 and 9/10. Today it ranks #42 on the Top TV series, with a 32% of 10/10, which makes sense for an anime in that position. On the opposite side, Frieren stats show less anomaly, though it still has a high number of 10/10, compare to other Top10. I'm expecting this to drop after the season ends, as its 8/10 and 9/10 are below average for a Top10 anime at time of writting, and those will probably grow when more people will start voting, lowering the final score.

Still not sure why brotherhood is number 1 though, I can find many many reasons it doesn't deserve that spot. No ones looked into how botted the score is for that anime of course. Lots of others that I personally would put ahead just have... An 8.0, maybe 8.1 if we're lucky. I stopped looking at Mal sore when the redid the site and screwed up the user review section since that was the best gauge for a lot of anime for me.

The only reason holding this anime from my top 1 is simply personal preference. While I think it's almost a perfect show, there's shows that I like more. Fantasy just isn't my #1 genre.

Answer: Until the end of the season when most of the reasonable people will give it a fair rating. Whether it will stay no.1 after that I dunno, but it will probably stay in the top 100. I'll watch the video now because I haven't actually seen it LOL.
