Young stallions generally dont intend to do harm, only establish rank. Accidents DO happen even among young buddies who grew up together . When the hormones start kicking and you put a young lovely lady in the mix, things get more complicated. 😉

I love watching the young stallions play! 🐎🐎🐎 I'll admit though, they would scare the stew out of me if I was there. Every time they put their heads together, make that sound, and go up on their hind legs, I jump! Even at my comfortable distance all of the way over here in America. 🙂

Me too but it's hard to tell between the two more dominant boys. It reminds me of Risey, RJ and Pietre. It's obvious that Pietre is low man on the totem pole but Risey and RJ seem to be equals. Often Risey leads the other two. I think it's amazing that Rein bought Pietre so Riijnse Janko would have a friend to socialize with when he was weaned.

Hm, I find it surprisingly hard to tell, much more so, than in a regular herd setting. But I think, the big one with the halter. Because everytime he and the halterless one have a go at each other, the halterless one then promptly goes over to the one who is still chewing at the others and bullies him a bit. But I‘m glad, you’re letting ‚da boyz‘ play and roughhouse with each other like that. That’s how you get horses, that are well adjusted as well as beautiful 👍

The one without the halter is the alpha of the group, You notice one always seems stay at his behind, while one without halter is biting at other one.. This of course can quickly change depending on their age and other horses in the area. But the real Alpha is one behind the camera :P

It looks like they are friendly to each other. Whenever one turns his back and kicks, he doesn’t hurt but makes a gesture. They could hurt but choose not to. The one that stands off to the side is the one on watch; they rotate watch duty so all of them can run around and interact. It all seems playful and friendly the way males might play and get to know one another. So it’s hard to see who is the boss, but maybe that’s because these guys aren’t seriously engaged in establishing dominance right now. There aren’t any females there. I don’t know horses that well so this is my guess.

Easy, the big one with the halter is the boss. He moves the other horses as he pleases and doesn´t back off. He hold his ground. Next in order is the one without the halter, and last is the small one with the halter. He even does this chewing foals do when older horses gets near to show submission.

Yes, they’re boys and they need to do this! Yes, it looks rough to us but they don’t really get hurt. The kick is a warning, like a growl from a dog. It’s not intended to make contact, it’s just sending a message. This kind of language is important for them all to learn.

The halterless stallion seems to hold an edge among them? Quick nips and driving the others a bit ? This is so fun and interesting - I love that this male group is together, playing and exercising. Even with mares, no doubt , in pastures and barns nearby. How old are they? Have they been bred? I'd love to see more like this , with your comments and observations about your daily lives with your Friesian stallions !!

Agree. While the other two are busy playing dominance games, the haltered one of those two "mouths" like a foal, which indicates to me he is subordinate to the one without the halter. On the other hand, the one that stays off by himself brushes off any challenge from the other two and can't be bothered with them - which indicates to me he considers them inferiors to himself.

Not overly fond of these horses being introduced in this way as it's not very productive or safe, there's nothing to distract them from each other and lots of corners where one could be pinned. The horses themselves mostly seem to be playing, it's also nice to see stallions together as they should be- not fond of the halters but understand why they are there but they can be caught or grabbed by another horse during a fight- be aware of this halters are dangerous on horses when not in use as they often catch on fences or branches and can strangle horses to death or break their necks when they try to free themselves. If you must use a halter have one with a clip under the chin and attach bailing twine so it can snap if need be. However, if you need a halter to catch your horse the problem is something worth taking the time to tackle with time rather than short-sighted solutions. One other thing I will say is that it strikes me that these stallions are somewhat well socialised but I suspect most of the time have somewhat limited contact with other horses which makes life nearly unbearable for them as they have very low impulse control. Out of all of these horses, the stallion without the halter is by far the most well socialised and steady-minded. Lastly, if you look around on scientifically-backed blogs you will find that studies show that horses choose to follow those they view as the most knowledgeable or in need horses, the stallion is not the boss no horse is the boss but each has separate roles. Pregnant mares will often lead the rest of the herd to water as they are the highest priority in the herd, young stallions can act as protectors against predators and other stallions when their father is busy. Stallions will keep themselves between their families and threats but that doesn't mean the mares don't also act as individual protectors. Stallions drive from the back to keep the herd together but don't actually dictate where the group goes that is the mare in front which is interchangeable with the needs of the other horses. Basically, horse relationships are based on need, respect and trust. Play can often give the impression that there are placements within a herd, this behaviour has been disproven in predators also and although it is out-dated research is still used in many documentaries which spread misinformation to the masses that don't fact-check.

Question? If a matriarch’s daughter tends to assume a matriarch role later in a herd, would this also be true for the colt/stallion of that matriarch? Also, in a herd in the wild, is it the matriarch who leads the herd while a stallion is at the rear? If true, I would guess that the lead stallion would assume the last position at the rear, pushing the herd onward and forward. Not sure though.

Very interesting interaction with three stallions in same field however, in NZ when I was working in harness racing stable we all jog two years old colt, even three years old as well in cart with two colts on lead on tow on both sides, never had any problem but never in same paddock together. Here in the U.S. they were like freaked out or saying that it is impossible to jog three colts same time lol. I have another question, someone posted Friesian Marketsplace on website here in the U.S. they advertised a stallion as Friesian bred but it's not all black or dark brown like typical Friesian breed. This stallion is pinto colored: www.equinenow.com/horse-ad-1283252 It's fine if that stallion is part Friesian or mixed but they cannot simply just put Friesian as breed. Correct me if I'm wrong? Is there such 100% Friesian breed/bloodline with color other than black/brown?
@FriesianHorses
@FriesianHorses 4 жыл бұрын
It's absolutely not a 100% Friesian. Friesians are only black. Sometimes with a white dot on their head or a white sock or something. If they have to much white they are not good enough for the studbook. The horse you main must be a Barock Pinto horse. Hear you can find information: barockpintostudbook.com As far as I know.. often the stud is a Friesian and the sire is a Barock Pinto.
