Hello Alan, I really like your videos because they are very informative for me as a beginner in Home Assistant. At the moment I am running HAOS on an Intel NUC. When I watched my first videos about HA I would have never thought that I had to do such a lot of installing, implementing, coding and failing. But I managed to setup the basics in the end. Then I saw some videos about Frigate and I remembered that I always wanted camera surveillance on my property. So I implemented Frigate to my HAOS installation but I quickly realized that I need a bit more space to store the data produced by Frigate than it is possible on my NUC with only a 256GB SSD. I read that it is not possible to mount external USB HD's under HAOS. For that I have to run HA and Frigate in Docker Containers but this adds another level of administrating my HA installation. So I found out that someone used udev rules to 'mount' an external HD to the HAOS installation. That sounded very interesting but I failed epically and ruined my HA installation. So I am done with that and I don't want to install everything on Docker Containers. So I got to the question if I can install Frigate on a seperate Hardware e.g. another Intel NUC and connect Frigate to my HAOS installation. Maybe you can tell me if this is possible and how to do it or maybe you know a source that has done it. Thank you and kind regards Michael.

Thank you Alan. You've filled in many of the missing pieces in my puzzle and joined up knowledge that was in different places (HA; Docker; Frigate). I'm left with a great sense of achievement eg here with Frigate. Your quality and detail is good. To help me find what I'm trying to do put a list of skills or content in your descriptions (eg adding a container to HA, access a USB device in Docker, configure a camera) . Do likewise on your blog (each skill is deserving a tag). These things help us find your stuff which so deserves its popularity.

Great series of videos on Frigate and its integration into home assistant. Got me started and I managed to achieve my first automation - switching on the desk light when I sit down for work, based on a little esp32 cam's footage of my work place :). What didn't work for me is the wait-for-a-trigger. The action afterwards (switching the light off again when the occupancy goes to normal again) always happens instantaneously after the light is switched on. As if the wait-for-a-trigger is not waiting for anything :) Had to do a second automation for this.

I'm recommending people (IRL and here on YT/comments) to watch your excellent Frigate series, I would suggest that you make the titles more descriptive/selling and adjust/add something like "CCTV Home Assistant with Frigate - Part 1/3 Introduction, requirements and basic setup" Even though you already have cameras, and your shout out to The Hook Up is good use of each of your channel's strengths, I do miss a video that talks about the pros and cons of different camera features, which ones are irrelevant when you plan to use Frigate (obviously object detection), which manufacturers are OEM or just rebranding generic low cost/quality ones, which ones are "open enough" to make full use of Frigate and Home Assistant etc. Perfect opportunity to collaborate? Also, an episode of how easy it is destroying a consumer SSD with continuous writes with the "wrong" settings (in Proxmox, Docker, Home Assistant or Frigate) could be useful.. depending on how one's disks are organized, this may be a big risk in "everything in one server" setups..

Question please - what floodlight are you using for the automation please? How do you recommend integrating that floodlight into HA? Great video as always. Revisiting frigate as I’m moving house.

I only have the notifications working locally for now. It seems to send 4-5 notifications in the space of only a minute. There is a default delay of 30 seconds set between each notification, but it doesn't seem to abide by this rule. And sensor seems a bit sentimental at times and doesn't always send out the notification.

I agree security surveillance is a deterrent, it raise the bar for criminals, thus they are more likely to go find a less risky target. As an HOA president, I can state that professional criminals will take that risk if they are going after high value items, such as cars. They know that most security cameras are not monitored live, thus time is on their side in the middle of the night. They are dressed so it nearly impossible to be identified after the fact. They have an exit plan and you should always assume they are armed, so even if are caught in the middle of a crime they will execute their plan.

Thank you very much for the 3 Videos!!! I also have a question and hope you have time to answer: My HA is running on my NAS via a virtual machine. I do not have that extra coral TPU. When I activate Detect on Frigate it tells me not to use the CPU for detection. Maybe just for testing. So my question: What is more resource/power cosuming: Leave the system on detect anyway and and record only the events OR turn of detect and record 24/7 ignoring any detect and maybe delete the footage after some days. Great channel - so valuable. Novice here just starting out with HA. Plan to install HA OS on a re-furb PC with i5 processor and 8mb RAM and 250GB SSD. I thought the general advice is to not use Virtual Box but turn over the whole PC to Linux HA. However I am confused about Frigate. If this PC is set up totally for Linux with HA Operating System, can Frigate be installed and run on this as well. Or do I have to leave the PC as windows and install HA in a virtual box, then have Frigate in windows on the same PC and make some kind of connection so the video data gets passed to HA within the virtual box?

Set this up yesterday .. want to use it as a motion sensor that doesn't get triggered by animals.. works pretty well... Still need to experiment how it handles cameras going on and offline as I want to power switch them on and off when they are needed..

Hi I followed the instruction when trying to setup the integration it says connection failed?

I can install the Frigate integration but every camera it detects shows unavailable for sensors and no detect, motion, recording, etc. even though I can see it detecting and recording events through Frigate Docker ... any idea why this would be? Furthermore, when I add the Frigate card to the dash it says no valid cameras found even though the integration shows 13 of them.

Question, if you use NabuCasa to access home assistant remotly, do i need to install frigate as addon or can still install it as docker and still be able to access remotly via nabucasa?

I've got motion detection working and can see events / pictures captured under the frigate ui, however none of the sensors are logging anything so I can't use them for automation. Has anyone had this issue?

Running Frigate past year.. My HA pc died. New I7 32 G ram 1 TB m.2 512 ssd. Running Bare Metal I load in HACS REBOOT and go to add integration-All I get is Failed to connect

There is no "Manage Resources" in the 3-dot menu under dashboard, only "unused entities" , "raw configuration editor", and "manage dashboards". does your HA have some custom config?

you need to go to click on your use and enable "advanced mode" to allow access to "add new resource" menu

I can't get the blueprint to work. I get a notification but it has 3 buttons: view clip, view snapshot and silence notifications... no preview image. If I go into the Frigate UI I can see snapshots that were taken when I walked in front of the camera... not sure what's going on. Also, I'm not getting the snapshots saved to media/frigate/clips either (the add-on has never saved any there)

Good morning Home Automation Guy, I have already integrated the camera with frigate in HA. The issue is that now I want when the camera recognizes a person, it turns on a light for me. From node-red I was trying yesterday and I couldn't (I didn't have much time either, I was integrating the nest thermostat and other stuff, i will try again today), so I started to make the automation to turn on the light from the HA automations as you show in the video. The problem I found is that what I have to activate are sonoff(zbmini) relays, not lights, and in the automations it only discovers entities that are lights. Do you know how this automation could be done to turn on the relay when the camera detects a person? Thanks in advance. By the way, your channel is awesome!

I made it through all three parts of the video and I have everything working except the blueprint (tried stable and beta). I'm using IOS with external access via Nabu Casa. My notification service works fine. For example I made an automation that sends me a text notification if a person is detected on my front porch. Any advice on how to troubleshoot the failure of the blueprint?

is their any frigate specialised forum? I think i followed your steps and got an integration showing switches. But they are "unavailable" so nothing happens when i toggel them (decect / motion / recordings / snapshot). When i integrations to the camera device i see no events in the logbook. But if i go the the frigate Add-On i can toggle all those switch and get a presentation of the latest events and can access the recordings. Natuerally i have tested to reboot my homeassistent serveral times without success. What kind of problem kan i have (MQTT ?) and how can i solve this? Is their a special forum, Facebookgroup or sameting like this where you can discuss this questions?

I don't recommend HACS. While I do love the community I find that using HACS my system is less responsive and crashes. That is why I only use the official add-ons from Home Assistant.

Everything is fine accept the clips, recordings, and snapshots created when using the blueprint all say incompatible in the iOS app. They all work fine on my pc browser. Any ideas?
