Installing a Frigidaire FHWC253WB2 on a warm day and seeing how it performs in the living room. This was a good test, the weather conditions were similar to that of a typical summer day around here.
The performance was OK, but nothing at all impressive for the size. It really seems significantly under-powered for the rated BTU capacity. There's also something flaky with the thermostat adjustment, which I can only imagine is some kind of intentional design in effort to 'increase efficiency' or 'reduce electricity consumption'.
On the better side of things, it was surprisingly quiet. The fan noise wasn't anywhere near as loud as I was expecting it to be. The compressor was significantly louder, but I'd rather hear that than the fan.

Did you have problems pulling this unit out of the cabinet? I swear to God I've found all the shipping screws, but it will NOT slide out! What are the 2 bolts on the very bottom of the cabinet--the "belly" of the cabinet (not the sides). Mine is the 28,000 BTU

Jordon I reached out to you a couple weeks ago about my 1987 carrier air conditioner filter. I went and bought the filter material that you suggested. And I’m gonna cut out the filter material using the old frame from the air conditioner and use painters tape to tape it to the frame So do I put that filter material on both sides of the frame? Or just on one side? And if it’s just on one side should the filter material and frame be facing (up against ) the coils or be Against the cover. I wish I could send you pictures of the frame to show you, but I don’t know how. Any guidance you can give me will be greatly appreciated as it’s gonna be getting hot thank you thank you- Tamie

The filter should be facing the front cover of the unit, such that the frame will prevent the filter from getting sucked against the coils.

Thanks for the update video. Just watched your set up video for this unit. Do you know how I can find someone to repair my 1985 Carrier slide in wall ac? Are they even repairable? The unit runs but after an hour starts squealing then made a loud thump but motor kept running with weak airflow. So maybe a new belt or grease on the drive shaft for the fan? I'm not knowledgeable of how to fix these old timey units I grew up with. My dad was the tinker man and could fix anything but he's in heaven now.
@JordanU
@JordanU 11 ай бұрын
They are very easily serviced compared to some other designs. I ended up using a 1988 Carrier in this location, probably a similar model to what you have. It sounds like one of the blades either came loose on the shaft, or the bearings need to be oiled. Your best bet would be to find an older "mom and pop" company that does AC repair. I think it would be a better investment to put $500 into repairing your Carrier unit than buying a new one.

I feel like any modern unit I've ran into with a electronic thermocouple has had that problem with short cycling. I've gotten to the point where every one of these I service I remove the thermocouple from the evaporator and run it along the power cord so it's not noticeable. The performance of most of these is just OK, they get the job done but don't offer satisfactory performance.

It should be several weeks now before I need the unit again. Before I put it back in I will remove the thermostat and tie it to the power cord as far away from the coil as possible.

An old Philco Ford would freeze this turd right out of the window. New appliances just don't cut it like the old ones lol. I have an Amana 10,000 BTU and it does the job well for my room, though it's probably oversized. It blows cold even on hot days but I'll still take any vintage with mechanical controls over a new one. I had the same problem you have with it reading the wrong temperature on two portable delonghi units. 12K BTU single hosed (Dual hose FTW if you ever buy a portable) and on 110 degree day it struggled to keep my room below 80. It was awful. I cleaned the coils, filters, fan blades, nothin worked. Cool video though, I love watching your channel a lot. Good to see another fellow Jordan haha.

The problem with todays ACs are they have styrofoam as the divider instead of metal with fiberglass batting. Styrofoam insulates so the inside of the unit never gets too cold like the older all metal units which in turn decreases their output overall. The compressor basically has to keep pumping to chill the air and the unit itself instead of the metal giving off its cold temp to help out with the cooling. Second, there will never be a gas as good as R-22 or R-12. On the flip side, yes, todays units are a lot lighter and compact, however, they suck at cooling. Nice video.
@JordanU
@JordanU Жыл бұрын
The Styrofoam design also doesn't keep the noise down like the insulated metal does. R-134 was up there with 22 in a lot of ways, but for whatever reason never seemed to make it's way into machines like this. All this 410 and 32 stuff now is abysmal junk, pressures way too high.

It will be replaced sometime this year, but I'm going to have to begin the summer with it. The Fedders needs to be torn apart and thoroughly coated for water resistance before it's used, the Amana needs to have the charge adjusted, and the Carrier needs serious rust restoration.

I had the exact same issues with modern A/C units myself. They never seemed to cool to the set point properly. I've had to extend the thermostat wires and mount the probe away from the unit just to get it to run properly. Then if I tried to go below 70 they would freeze into a block of ice. My 83, 7800 BTU Gibson gets my master bedroom into the mid 50s if I let it and averaged around 600 Watts last summer. Even the GE Porta-Cool units can freeze out a room as I have a couple of those too. I do have a modern Frigidaire 8000 BTU unit I want to replace the electronic controls with an Arduino. I know I can make a better control and program in a proper freeze sensor to shut the compressor down when the coil starts icing. I think the main issue is the electronic controls are too sensitive and the extra dense coils freeze up on these modern units. It's not uncommon to run the A/C in my area when it's in the 50s as the humidity gets bad. A modern unit will refuse to even turn on when the outside temp is below the set point.

@ESDI80 We get the cooler damp nights here as well, and the ACs are often used to take care of it. I tried to use this one a few days ago when it was damp and in the high 60s, and sure enough it kept icing up. Definitely an air flow issue. The Amana unit I used last year would run perfectly into the 60s, keep going for as long as I wanted and remove all the moisture quite nicely.

Hey Jordan, the reason your air conditioner isn't performing very well is likely because you drilled a hole in it! Modern air conditioners don't need drain holes because they're supposed to have water build up in the pan and then the condenser fan's slinger will throw the water over the compressor and condenser coil to cool the unit! Drilling a drain hole in the air conditioner will significantly reduce the unit's efficiency and lifespan! This is most likely the reason your unit isn't performing very well! I hope this advice will help you so you don't make this mistake again, Jordan!
@MrScottie68
@MrScottie68 Жыл бұрын
Peter, sorry but your statement isn’t entirely correct. Condensate water has largely nothing to to with the cooling efficiency. For example, Central ac units, old or new, have their fans mounted at the top of the unit and condensate water is handled in the coil which is separate from the outdoor compressor and condenser coils. for window units, some areas of the US like Arizona and Nevada have dry heat and very low or practically no humidity and there will be almost no condensate yet cool perfectly fine. In fact, In areas of very high humidity, there is often a large amount of excess water buildup that the “slinger” of window air conditioners can’t properly deal with. Therefore the bottom of the condenser coils are constantly submerged in water leading to early rusting and even worse may get to the point where it leaks back into the house if the unit tilt is not correct. Yes, spraying the condenser coils with water to remove dust and dirt will definitely make your unit more efficient but with this brand new unit, that’s not an issue. The owner in this video is probably used to his older unit which contained R-22 or R-12 refrigerant which produced much colder output air than the modern refrigerant this unit contains.
@psychedelicnarwhal9599

The issue isn't the air temperature, but the amount of air pushed by the fan. And also, condensate has nothing to do with it at all.

Before you even go back to vintage, you should look at the signs for the Frigidaire 25,000 BTU window air conditioner, not blowing as strong as you’d like. Your first step should always be to examine the air filter and make sure it's clean . A dirty filter can block air from the evaporator coils, never allowing cold air to circulate around the room. The filter is usually behind the front grill, accessed from the side or top of the unit. Also, look at the rear of the unit. Aug 14, 2020
