Ice, fire and breath. Wardruna & FRIKAR join forces in new music video to focus on climate. Enable subtitles for lyrics.
“For a long time I have admired FRIKAR and their skillful way of merging the past with the present in their artistic expressions”, says Einar Selvik, the man behind Wardruna. “ In many ways very similar to our own musical approach to history and older Nordic traditions. Needless to say I was very exited when they wanted to create a video performance, giving their interpretation of our song Andvevarljod.”
“To me it’s very inspiring to see how Wardruna has succeeded in using inspiration from Nordic folk music to create their own sound which releases the visceral power that lies beyond the conscious mind. We are both highly interested in how the Norse mythology connects humanity with nature. Covid-19 might have distracted humanity from the climate crises, and with this film I hope we can inspire to connect with nature”, says Hallgrim Hansegård. He is both the filmmaker and choreographer behind the film.
Andvevarljod (Song of The Spirit-Weavers) is a central piece on the new Wardruna album KVITRAVN. It explores the Nordic deities of fate; the Norns, the spinning of life threads and the Norse and Sámi common idea that a person´s spirit is connected to wind, both before and after birth. The song features guest appearances by a small group of prominent Norwegian traditional singers, Kirsten Bråten Berg, Sigrid Berg, Unni Løvlid, Ingebjørg Reinholdt alongside our own Lindy-Fay Hella. The music video features the FRIKAR dancers Sikia Chi Masters Heien, Håkon Håvelsrud Odden, Nikolaj Bo Fischer Nielsen and Hallgrim Hansegård.
This is the first time Wardruna & FRIKAR collaborate, even though they both have toured the world with new artistic expressions inspired by Norse folk traditions. Wardruna is famous for giving sound to the TV show “Vikings” and computer game “Assassins Creed Valhalla”. FRIKAR helped Norway win Eurovision Song Contest in 2009 and gave movements to the computer game “Age of Conan hyborian adventures”.
The canyon and waterfalls of the music video is going to be the scenary of FRIKARs new production GANDR July 21st - 30 th 2022. For more info about FRIKAR please visit frikar.com.

Anyone who wants to and has the talent, should be allowed to participate in Norwegian culture and folk dancing, regardless of wether they're of Norwegian descent. It's not like ancient Norse culture was completely homogenous either, they traveled far and wide. Anyone who claims there was no diversity in the Viking Age, doesn't know history.

Racism is a gift of Mother Nature herself! If you are not a racist you are denying Nature and Natural Law itself! With a mindset like yours, no wonder White Nations are turning to shit! Shame on you, RACE TRAITOR!!!

What gorgeous choreography and play with the elements, lovely tribal movements throughout, beautiful representations of fire and ice, as well as of divine feminine and masculine energy, well done! We use Wardruna songs every morning for breath work and ritual. And agreed, there's zero room for racism- our Norse ancestors were explorers, the words of the High One encourage us to travel far and learn, there's nothing in the lore regarding delusions of racial superiority (that toxic mindset only came later with the domination of patriarchal belief systems, which are not part of this spiritual path in the slightest), all of our ancient cultures are a lot more alike than many seem to realise, and this music is to connect us on a deeper level, not divide us. Wardruna's music is deeply spiritual in a way we can all relate to, and that tribal, nature-worshipping spirit lives deep within all of us, regardless of our origins. Anyway, beautiful work, may the gods be with you

Powerful . . . . . Can we as humanity come together enough to look after one another, and the earth we are so intimately connected to? Many western cultures (which is mine) seems to have lost connection and heart, its spirituality with Creator - however we might name the one who has given us breath.

I am curious about the staff work, can you share a bit more on that? She was really seemingly weaving which obviously was the point.
@frikar
@frikar 2 жыл бұрын
Thank for an interesting question! Yes, we chose to give the Norn a staff, in Norse a gandr. Gandr means both staff and spirit, which were connected values during Iron Age and Medieval times. The name Gandalf from Lord of the rings simply means elf with a staff. One of the two women found at the Oseberg ship had both a staff and drugs often interpreted as she was a volve, shaman. So that's some background for the choice of using staff here. Technically the basics for the weaving movement material she performs is traditional staff play from Valdres of Norway, a region of Jotunheimen. We grew up with these ancient games practicing them on farming tools when getting bored during harvesting. I have also worked four months at a Chinese kung fu temple in Wudang Shan which probably also influences our world of ideas in how to treate a staff. - Hallgrim

The black "norn" shows kung fu, the guys show ballet. What does Wardruna and the Northern Tradition have to do with it?
@frikar
@frikar 2 жыл бұрын
Where is the ballet? With multiple National champion titles of Norwegian traditional dance FRIKAR combines artistic visions to create arts based on deep knowledge of our traditions. But as the Vikings brought new knowledge to their tradition we have toured worldwide including 4 months in a Chinese kungfu monastary. Knowing your neighbour doesn’t neccessary mean that you know yourself less… or what?

@@frikar Hm, it is the typical modern socialist thing. Take the past way of life and pull over the global socialist political correctnes thing. It is not so that the Black girl disturbs me it is more the pullover, i have the feeling that we get educated in that special way of globalism and that sucks. I liked wadruna and all the other because of no political shit but now i think it is gone mainstream to reach more people and for reaching more people i think you have to do that... i think there is no need for always do that political correctnes shit, as long as we Respekt each culture and as long we beware each other.

The early Vikings’ success stemmed in their ability to embrace and adapt from a wide range of cultures they interacted with: Christian Irish, Muslims of the Abbasid Caliphate, and all parts in between (including a vast variety of pagan cultures). Vikings were not an ethnicity, nor were they united in one religion, rather they were pirates. This meant that within the range of their boats or trade they had people from a range of ethnicities and cultures join their ranks. Keep in mind their range was vast: from as far West as modern day Canada, the North Sea and parts of the Arctic sea, areas of Northern Europe, as well as settlements or raiding that took them around the shores of the Mediterranean including Northern Africa, and around the Caspian and Black Seas as well into areas of Modern Turkey and Afghanistan, and as far East as Asia into what we think of as areas of modern Russia. They also would have lay over spots too between their homes and their raid targets (or other settlements). We can prove this by a variety of surviving manuscripts from the time as well as in the various burials and grave goods. Strontium isotope analysis of items and human remains from the archaeological record has been entirely eye-opening in this regard, pollen analysis, biogeochemistry, and now that our ability to process DNA has improved we're starting to be able to use DNA too to trace the history of human interaction (when we're able to extract viable DNA). I really recommend diving into a range of academic research published in various academic journals published in recent decades. The real propaganda is the belief that the Vikings were all the same. Of course, I'm here for the music, and I'm enjoying the music, dancing and the entire performance. ^o^
@noregslandi
@noregslandi 2 жыл бұрын
@@frikar to be completely honest Geirmund Heljarskinn was "black" as a reference to his hair and slightly darker shade of skin color, due to the fact that his mother was from an unspecified mongolic/turkic nomadic tribe. Furthermore, in other old norse texts, when a person was described as "black" or "dark" it was usually a synonyms of slave, as a reference to being sunburn and/or dirty because of the heavy manual labor in the fields. The norse for sure encountered, interacted and produced offsprings with many ethnicities in their endeavors but they were the exception and not the rule, so claiming that IV and X century (when Geirmund lived) norse society was multiethnical would be misleading.
@frikar
@frikar 2 жыл бұрын
@@noregslandi thanks for sharing opinion. If you see the start of this tread the discussion is not about How multietnical or multicultural Scandinavia was in those centuries. The tread started with claiming that black Vikings didnt exist stating this video being propaganda. This music video is an artistic expression of today inspired by Norse mythology.
