Such an awesome care video, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on this species! Getting my first frilly tomorrow, I’m an advanced reptile keeper, but this species was always daunting for me. After watching this I realized I definitely handle this husbandry. ☺️👍🏻

14:46: No. UVB CFL's actually do give off a decent amount of UVB. It's not comparable to the peak output given of by mercury vapor bulbs, but it's pretty omnidirectional (unlike Hg bulbs) and, when coupled with a good reflector to concentrate the light onto a baking spot, can exceed a Ferguson zone of 2 at a distance of about 10 in. This should be adequate for most baking species. Definitely get the highest output CFL you can, but they're completely serviceable for 120 gal or small (assuming the animal comes to the baking site frequently). Also, if you have more than a couple bulbs running at any given time, get a UVB meter or Ferguson index meter (i.e. a UVB meter with filters that mainly pass the short wave UVA and long wave UVB responsible for D3 synthesis). You'll find that most (but not all) brands continue outputting at least 50% of their starting UVB for well over a year which can save on bulb replacement cost. Do stay away from LED UVB. As of 2022 when I last investigated this, the bulbs I got started off almost dangerously bright, but degraded to almost undetectable levels in the span of 2 to 4 months.

I got a frilly yesterday as an early graduation present and this is my first reptile so I'm trying my hardest to take care of my baby. I haven't seen it drink water out of it's bowl and I'm worried it's not drinking. It eats just fine though. I've seen 3 vids and I can definitely say I trust your vid the most and I have thing written down. What I'm worried over is it getting bigger and the cost of things when I need them. Thanks so much for this video.
@unchartedwild2166
@unchartedwild2166 3 жыл бұрын
Yes this is not a good gift lizard. If your frillie doesn't drink from the bowl don't worry, just mist them once a day and that should be good. Frillies take a bit to settle in. As long as it's eating and you have the right UV light then those are the most important steps for them in the beginning
@flamingosama8060
@flamingosama8060 3 жыл бұрын
@@unchartedwild2166 thanks man, I keep the UV on the entire cage and Basking light on one side opposite of where I feed and put it's water at. I'm feeding crickets as of right now until it gets a bit bigger. I'm definitely subbing for the info on other animals as well. Thanks for everything. I've also got a heating pad on the side where it vibes on the tree I gave it.

If you have the room, a shower cubicle (adapted) would make a brilliant enclosure. I can't remember the guys name now but I saw a reptile collector who had done this and it looked amazing and they don't cost that much in comparison to ready made enclosures 👍

Have a 3 year old female frilly. She’s a cross between Indonesian and Australian. Got her from a trusted crested breeder at an expo. Captive bred and has been kept as a pet all her life, looking to upgrade her to a larger tank with possibly a small water pond. She keeps shedding so we’re worried she’s not getting enough humidity/water

There is no such thing they are endemic to Australia and papa new guinea. They are just farmed in Indonesia lol! That's like me farming black widows and calling them English black widows.
