Fringe was a show I started watching and never expected it to be as good as it was. Glad it got a FULL run of 5 seasons.
@CRanapia
@CRanapia 7 ай бұрын
I'm in two minds about that because while it was nice FRINGE got to go out on its own terms, I find season five enormously frustrating because it was really obvious the price was a cut in the season length from 22 to 13 episodes, and IIRC the budget for the final run was cut by something like 50% per episode. Like Slip Maker, I find a lot of the story telling akwardly compressed and hacked about as a result.

Fringe was ahead of its time. It's honestly frusturating how underrated the show is. I finished the series recently and it has such a great storyline and characters. Every actor in the show acted their asses off, espeically John Noble and Anna Torv. Like I get if season 1 may be a bit slow because it was sort of like a 'case of the week' each episode, but it adds to the story (I PROMISE). Everything will pick up in season 2 and it just gets better every season. So please, if you are hesitant in continuing the show. Don't stop! The plot thickens!

This series is so special to me. The fringe science was fun but when it needed to be emotional, not only was this show absurdly powerful but also so UNIQUE. It was an incredibly creative exercise in characterization that I just dont think exists under any other conditions. These passionate emotions are happening BECAUSE insane fringe science happened to these people. The scene where Olivia cries in front of her washer because Fauxlivia's laundry is still in it is just... I've never seen emotional storytelling that unique, not before or since. Moments like that ARE Fringe to me. It's so special.

This is one of my favorite series by far. For telling such a story at a time when storytelling through TV series was still hindered by needing to be accessible by audiences who happens to turn the TV on at the time, They killed it. The redemption that Walter was always striving for and Olivia and Peter's relationship that has time to breath was great. The love between father and son was amazing. Even though it's so messed up that he took another Peter he ended up being a better father than Walternate ever could have been. The way they left bread crumbs leading up to the big reveals about Peter's origin were perfect. For how much change the writer and show runners went through this show was phenomenal. It reminds me of some great comic runs that go through different writers and end up working out great. The parallel universe that ends up getting a lot of focus is so great. The premiere of Season 2 was awesome, just a thrill ride. The way Walter sacrifices himself at the end with the white rose. Oh man it's soooo beautiful. It has flaws for sure but it's a phenomenal series with amazing talent.

The sacrifice of Jones was successful, because it activated Olivia. It was designed (including the contrivance of them being on two different rooftops) to ensure that Olivia could only save Peter by using her abilities.

@josephkrengel
@josephkrengel Жыл бұрын
@@SlipMaker You're confusing "purposeful" writing with "good" writing. ;) Remember, that's ALSO the purpose of the escalator gambit. The show states clearly that fully activating her is an ongoing process.
@MrColinwith1L
@MrColinwith1L 7 ай бұрын
@@SlipMaker i think these can be distinguished though, as the whole point of activating her is to engage her mind and body fully into the activity with full consent to what she is doing, for a goal she is willing to give her all into. The exchange of emotion and intellect has always been a part of this show, the idea that both sides fully engaged make the complete human being able to unlock its potential. Her acting to save Peter's life is the only trigger event that can reach that level of using her abilities, and give her the positive experience that makes her continue using them in full confidence that it is for the good. Which of course is another main theme in the show, embracing a questionable means to play God for the sake of reaching what seems to be a good end -- this is often the pathway to horrible and unforeseen consequences.

ngl. I find him the weakest link in the show. It's like they have to shove his character down our throats and force a relationship with the FL so that he can stay relevant to the show. It really felt that the writers had to write him as the ultimate machine operator to save the world to make him more heroic than he appeared to be. This was a great show. I love to return to it every few years. And yes, I skip the whole first season. When I watched “Peter” the first time I knew that while the casting for this series was great it was the writing for Walter Bishop and John Noble’s performance that really sealed it for me. He plays, Crazy, Tripping, Genius, Comedic, Savant, and Megalomaniac, all to sweet perfection, across Walter and “Walternate.” The fact that Abrams and Noble new exactly what they wanted to do with this character is what allowed the show to find it’s footing. I was a teenager when X-Files aired and got to watch it religiously through college. This show brilliantly captured the 20th Century “Alien Conspiracy” trope in a PRE high-speed internet world. I think that Fringe was the Seminole 21st century version of this and I always loved how it avoided “Aliens” and made “US” the architects of our own prison.

Speaking of mystery box shows, I have to recommend The Leftovers. It's an extreme anti-mystery box show, with so many mysteries that are setup, with no answer ever revealed or even planned by the writers. It sounds like it would be a frustrating watch but it all comes together so well. I would say if you like the episode "Fly" of BrBa, you might like The Leftovers because while there definetly is a plot, it takes a backseat to the characters. The depth you go to is impressive, but the insight you give in evaluating the strengths and weaknesses is what I like best. I'm thinking of season 4, specifically. The dissonance between what the audience expected in Olivia's and Peter's storyline and what we actually got, the half-measure of giving Olivia her memories back, all of that was very well said

I remembered being so happy with this show. My siblings and I used to binge on The X-Files as kids until our mum caught up on us watching the episode "Home" and decided it was too dark. She liked The X-Files too so she kinda felt bad that she's making us miss out so she looked for a similar "less dark" series and discovered Fringe. It was fantastic! We watched the whole thing and though it couldn't replace The X-Files, it was still a great alternative for until we got old enough to continue watching The X-Files.

I'd been burned by J.J. too many times to ever start Fringe, so I have no idea why I'd even watch a retrospective of it, except that you're just that good. It's seldom that a show starts off mediocre and on a high note, so I've stopped the video after you'd got finished with season one and decided to give this show a shot.

Olivia's character is refreshing. She's allowed to be feminine while still being a professional and tough. She's a well-written strong female character that doesn't fall into the "cynical, snarky, can kick any man's ass" cliche that women leads fall into now.

Fringe developed into one of the better "Boot Strap Paradox" stories I've had the plesure of watching. [Observers = the extinction of life on Earth, the series of Fringe is how the people that Walter encounters in the futre prevent this extinction event, because if Walter doesn't go to that future with his knowledge and experience as evidence, life on earth becomes extinct. Quite possibly this is the result of another scientific team from the Observer reality? And Peter's return and Olivia's memories in series 4 are part of a greater experiment] The previous section of my comment is so I can take the "power of love" explination and put it in the trash lol.. Another wonderful paradox of thought and logic. Argh, too feel safe again..... As a first time viewer of your channel, this is genuinely a Good review. well done

Given that the white tulip reappears in the series finale, I understood that the characters' memories of Peter were restored, and his whole erasure from the timelines by the Observers was undone, in the S4 finale.

Upon further review, it looks like I'd forgotten that the observer child restored only Walter's memory. I suppose it's easy to lose track in this show.

I never liked that the timeline often got overwritten. It really should have just been two more universes that Peter got sucked into. That season 4 trailer was awesome though! Also keep in mind that I don't think Future Peter and Olivia from the Observer world ever made it back to the past when Walter went with Michael to the future.

I seriously loved this series! One thing that you didn't touch on, but I find an interesting little tidbit as well. Is that the Observers (especially the 'main' one that was seen during the beginning seasons) were eventually kind of tossed everywhere along the network that the show was running on. (Being Dutch, I don't know the original network. I wanna say ABC? But I can be seriously wrong.) So you could see an Observer in like baseball games. Other shows in the backgrounds. The occasional custom ad for that network. Etc. It was really neat, because it caused people to pay attention and then go back to the series as well. As someone who doesn't live in the US. I am frankly a little sad about not having been able to witness that. Other than the outside sources that I have seen it being talked about, like Reddit, or even the Wiki at that point (I don't know if it's still on there. It used to be.)
