I was raised UU and It’s made me able to implement Christian practices into my life coexisting with Buddhist practices! Many Christians will tell you it’s not right but please ignore and follow your heart if an open and personal relationship with god sounds right to you! Only you know what’s right!

I’m religious but not spiritual. I could give a crap about truths I don’t believe humans are capable of knowing or that it’s arrogant to even pretend to. But Jung was right, rituals, community, tradition, memes - these have an important psychological and social function in our lives and this church understands better than any other I know, how to build and refine that rather than plod along using ones that seem childish and absurd and demanding you accept them as miracles.

You can see that the Unitarian Universalists speak first from their own desires, according to their own wisdom, and not according to the wisdom of God. If I serve anything at all, it's the Spirit of Life and Love which leads to peace, joy, and the greater good. The Hebrew word _satan_ means "adversary" or "archrival". Since I believe that God is Love and Being itself, it doesn't stand to reason to accuse me of serving "satan". Have a blessed day!

Once you understand that "we are all God's children", and that God doesn't play favorites, you will no longer feel the need to be so judgmental about those who differ from you. The core philosophy of Unitarian Universalism certainly does make sense. Unfortunately the Unitarian Universalists have gotten heavily into Wokeness snd that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

A typical UU congregation has a large proportion of ex-Catholics, like me. I was raised in a Catholic family, did first communion and confirmation, and at 14 became intensely Catholic, ready to defend the faith against all debaters. But attending a Jesuit-run university turned me against the dogmatism and authoritarianism of that faith. It was a bitter experience. I married a practicing Catholic who was herself at the beginning of skepticism and disaffection, and she felt grief when she decided she had to leave Catholicism behind. We visited a UU fellowship in a university town at my suggestion. She let me drag her there as she muttered about "ethical culture BS" -- and she's the one who fell in love with it all, jolting me. Well, I'd always respected her instincts, and she was right again. That was in 1974, so we're now UUs for 47 years. So I'm ambivalent about the drops in Catholic numbers. That religion is such a good source of new UUs!

Catholicism is true, the authoritarianism makes complete sense because it tries to defend the morality of the society, without the Catholic Church's iron fist we get liberal societies where the morality erodes.

Hear me out if you care for yourself at all. I speak with urgency. One who is by nature a sinner will reject the one who hates sin. That one is the just God who is the creator of the universe and as such has every right to punish those who have violated his standard of perfection (For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God). Not only does he have the right to punish sinners, it would be against his nature to allow sin to go unpunished. If you understood your present state, then you would realize that you stand condemned before God. Why can you not see this? It is because you do not want to see it. You have suppressed the truth in your unrighteousness, but that does not excuse you from God's judgement. Speaking of you, Paul writes in Romans 1: "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness." The wrath of God is revealed against you! You do not understand these things because you are dead and blind to the truth. You are hiding under the blanket of your own righteousness as the burning volcanic ash races toward you, telling yourself that you are not in danger because you cannot see the danger. Do not be concerned with how religion makes you feel. Rather, be concerned with how you stand before a God who demands perfection. I implore you, do not be a fool. If you care for yourself at all, consider what I have said. Repent of your sin and submit to Christ Jesus as Sovereign and trust him as Savior lest you be consumed by the righteous wrath of God which will be poured out against you whether you believe it will or not.

I don't know what you mean by relativism. We're certainly not relativistic about morality. We pretty much agree about the right and wrong ways to treat other people and the earth. Some of us believe in God and some don't, and it gets really interesting when the believers try to define God! Our recently departed minister tried to accommodate all varieties of belief, but she was quite clear on this: "I am not a theist." In fact, I don't remember having a theistic minister in the 47 years I've attended there. One minister described herself as a pagan, her precedessor as "an American Transcendentalist." On politics we're mostly left of center, but listen respectfully to the few conservatives among us.

Look up the British and Foreign Unitarian Association on the Web. The British don't call themselves Unitarian Universalist, but the two varieties have been influencing each other for nearly two centuries. Both groups, the British & Foreign and the UUA, formally organized in 1825. British congregations are sometime known to call American ministers, in fact. I attended the Richmond Free Church in 1989, looked at its history, and learned that the first minister they called was from Boston, Massachusetts.

Yep, we assume being UU and being liberal-Democratic are the same thing, because predominantly we attract liberals and few conservatives. We did have one. He may still be with us, because we gave him the pulpit one Sunday. If I ever met him socially I would ask for his take on our social action programs.

This is two years late, but there are no seperate services at First Unitarian Church of Dallas. They have an early service and later service for accessibility, but they are both the same sermon by the same minister.

Many congregations are humanist in a nontheistic sense, some by covenant and some de facto. Can't tell you anything about the one(s) in Dallas.

Why not take the final step then and be free of these people? Why run twice as fast to get to the same place?

We're not great at growing our numbers, though we are growing a little, unlike most of the larger denominations. Social action is a separate concern. So when we feed the homeless, we don't make them pray with us first.

Try the Episcopalians, the UCC Congregationalists, Evangelical Lutherans, Disciples of Christ, Quakers, etc... There are no televangelists running these churches, but a lot of them are pretty tight groups. Go ahead and let "the Google" help you in your spiritual search.

Nondenominational churches are very similar but Christian. That is what I am!

Hey suki! From what I've gathered (I'm still researching this) one of the main things they believe is that we can't know everything, so therefore your hope of "at least the possibility" of Jesus as the son of God is definitely possible and would be accepted by this church. Overall it seems very accepting so I don't see why this would be a reason to avoid it. :D

There are alternatives that I think are better. I just am hesitant to say that I have knowledge. In my opinion Christianity is a better choice than Unitarian Universalism. One reason may be Blaise Pascal's anthropological argument.

Indeed. One fundamental underlying Judeo Christian belief is that we all sin, which simultaneously serves to humble us, and gets us to not expect our fellow man to be perfect. Also, with humanity being fallen, there is an opportunity for redemption, and a substantial mission for all believers to undertake: to save souls and be a whiteness to others.

@@hismajesty6272 that sounds great in theory but in reality most christians are the least humble people i've been around. when you think that the universe revolves around human beings and it's your duty to convert the entire world and there's no room for other beliefs. all of those views significantly outweigh any other things that could potentially humble them. there are more things that inflate the ego than humble. i've met some christians that are very humble but it's few and far between. they typically have a sense of entitlement and a belief that they're superior beings.

Yes, well said. I attended a UU fellowship for two years. I am a Theist in the Advaita Vedanta tradition and they kept telling me that they accept all beliefs and they had no dogmas. But that was a lie. Their "default" creed was the philosophy of scientific materialism. Most congregants, if they used the word God at all were timid and embarrassed when they did. At best they simply refered to a "transcendental assumption" and defined faith as community. Definitely a "church" without God.

I just wish that UUism would acknowledge that there creed is scientific materialism. I had a friend who was into Eckhart Tolle. She was elderly and had many problems but when talking about Tolle she'd become ecstatic. But people at the 'church" kept picking at her comments, trying to show her how ridiculos Tolle was. Her joy would turn into depression.

Now that's funny. The church means ecclesia, the called out ones from the world. Universalist believes everything, so it cannot be a church that is apart from the world because they do not have an isolated and single truth. Truth by it's very meaning excludes everything outside of it's self. There can be only one, and the Truth is Jesus Christ.

Some people say church, some people say fellowship or other terms. It’s really just a way to convey to people that they are congregating on a regular basis and are a spiritual community

+Dan Rush people don't go to hell because of their actions, but the scriptures do teach that ones actions will reflect their faith, as made evident in the teachings of Jesus, the book of James, the epistles of Paul, etc. For salvation though, it is only by faith through the grace of God that we are saved.

It doesn't simply tell you what you shall or shall not do it is showing you the possible choices and outcomes of those choices rather good or bad. Everything has a variable.
