This video shows how we converted a U-haul box truck into a tiny house.
The conversion took us 6 weeks, and cost about $4000 (not including the box truck). About $1000 of that was our wood stove and shower, which were not shown in this video but are included in the tour video below.
See the inside:

Thank you for uploading this - I paused enough to write some stuff down - I'll be doing mine pretty much on my own - minus 'foreseeable headaches' (plumbing, electrical, solar and welding) but u gave some excellent 'oh right I forgot about that' lol I LOVE that the door opens inwards for the issue of snow and want to put my bed in like this too... you're not divorced and travelling so that's a great sign... again enjoy your time together... also there's a lot of awesome gatherings in places US/Canada - Arizona and Quebec - the 1st is like a 'Work Bee Party' if you need help - mostly volunteer tradesman etc and in Quebec there's a Tiny Mobile Fest every summer - where you can enter your home into contests.(similar to a Show & Shine... VAST stuff to do for all ages.

Cool project. 2 things that I would have done differently (coming from a guy who's lived nomadicly for most of his 40 years); 1st, I'd have kept that roll up door. You may need to park it for a week, or leave it at a shop. That door would be a desirable thing, in such circumstances. 2nd, I'd have created access between cab and living quarters. Consider: It's a beautiful day when you leave point A. You are wearing shorts, tank top, and flip-flops. You arrive at point B, a higher elevation. It's cold, and rainy. You now have to go outside, fumble with keys, and get soaked. It's only a few moments, but they are miserable. Also, in a pinch, the climate controls in the cab could help to heat/cool the living area... were there access. I haven't, yet, watched the interior tour, but you may still be able to create the cab access. And, other commenters have good ideas on roll up door alternatives. (Putting that back would be overly complicated!) Myself, I'd have a bottom half that folds down into a porch, a top half for an awning, and a way to padlock it when shut. Still, as I said, cool project. Makes me wish I was still in my twenties :) Also, if you have to park in sketchy areas (it can happen) that roll up door, combined with direct cab/living quarters access, is extra security.

@@truebaby My, what an immature and nasty remark. Way to live up to your chosen name, I suppose. With an attitude like that, one could reasonably infer that yours is a life of unnecessary error. At any rate, you are correct in that it's NOT me. I would have done something entirely different, to start with. But, it would have been silly and unproductive to comment on that, so I kept my commentary within the scope of the project. Secondly, no. I will not "shut it". This video was posted in a public forum, on a public channel, with the public commentary turn on. If I wish to express my thoughts on a video, I will do so, whether YOU like it, or not. The gentleman that posted this particular video appears to be a grown man, with a wife and children. I believe that he is mature enough, and of reasonable mind, to accept a little constructive criticism. Lastly, many people who watch this sort of thing, do so to plan their own project. It's an inspiration thing. My comment was just as much for their benefit, as it was for the young man who built that tiny home on wheels. (I'm pretty sure that I mentioned that I liked the project over all) At any rate, Verifiable Infant, I'll keep on commenting, and you keep on trolling, and perhaps we'll meet again. Be well!... Or don't; you're call.

Isn't that the truth. I'm the same kind of friend. I'm a contractor. I'm always willing to help friends. Either in my trade or even just with simple stuff.. It's funny though how many people you help, then when you ask. They cant be bothered. I'm not saying a lot of friends are like that.. That is why my fiend circle is small.. not necause of me but because there aren't alot of people that aren't out for just themselves anymore.. So the friend I do have, I don't even ask.. I tell them I'm doing something. They invite themselves and vise versa!

@CrasProductions
@CrasProductions 4 жыл бұрын
Tyvek can work as long as it is right side up or upside down, the small piece over the door won't drain, they also did not integrate the window and door properly and are missing all kick out flashings, when they caulked the exterior siding they created a back damn and may cause water to be held against the Tyvek and mold.

WOW! Probably the best time-lapse video of a conversion that I have EVER seen! I wanted to keep it simple with an Astro/Safari conversion, because I could use the Parkways here in the Metro NYC area, but you two have demonstrated that , for creature comforts, one could forego the parkways and just suck it up! My only other problem is the mpg... I'll figure that out... Seriously, what a beautiful job, and a great video! That's amazing. My daughter and I are saving for a van or truck to convert into a home for us. How did you buy the UHaul and how much did it cost? And how much did the restoration cost? Thank you so much. Great video

Chakat Nightsparkle I’m with you about the toilet but a toilet/shower combo would be good. Eventually, I will build one of these for full time living and I want it to be comfortable and stealthy.

Rhinona Ryder clearly that is would of which should be would have. Not as bad as the bad American habit of saying “off of”. Or in fact the habit of adding pointless words such as “already” to the end of a sentence.

Great idea for retired U-Haul or Penski trucks. Make the ceiling white to make it seem larger in there. Use recycled drawers to form those benches for storage. Add solar panels & wah la more self sufficient. It could be done with larger trucks as well.

It took 6 weeks to build. The truck cost me $5k and I bought it on January 8 of this year, so I've only owned it about 7 weeks. I've spent pretty much everyday working it and have spent a little over $4000 on the build (I'll get the exact number soon), including the tiny wood stove and shower that are not in this video.

06 Ford E-350. I'm working on totaling up the expenses and I will let you know the exact numbers. Off top the wood stove and all of it's parts were almost $1000. The framed wall probably totaled somewhere $700, that's including the $90 window ands $220 door. The fan was $200, upper cabinets about $200, shower kit was about $180, RV battery was $100. I'll definitely let you know when I get it all totaled up.

I do appreciate the work and craftsmanship, however there was several choices in materials that I would have made differently focusing on keeping everything as lightweight as possible. you may not be taking this across the country, but you are taking on a whole lot of weight and a whole lot of fuel efficiency.
