Vladimir, a scrappy Russian marine biologist, stows away aboard a boat filled with adventure junkies and a world-renowned cybersecurity expert to help fulfil his quest to understand and protect the Kuril Islands. Set in one of the most inaccessible volcanic island chains in the world, the film introduces us to a true warrior for the planet on an intimate journey of visual bliss, sea lion chaos, and ultimately a greater hope for the Earth.

This was the world, before man. Every single inch of land is sacred. This year I let my garden grow wilde. Tons of local beautiful plants and flowers grew, a toad moved in, we saw a snake, a tarantula. Life is sacred.

Initially, these were Russian territories from the 18th century. Kondo Morishige in 1804 in his essay “The Study of the Border Regions and Their Maps” noted that “in 1768, the red-haired (Russians) set up pillars on the South Kuril Islands, carved the name “Kurils” on them, began to collect yasak from the Ainu”. Japan concluded an agreement in 1875, according to which the Kuriles became theirs, and Sakhalin became Russian. In 1905, Japan declared war on Russia and seized South Sakhalin, and when they were told that under the treaty these territories were Russian, the Minister of Japan replied: "The war crosses out all treaties. You were defeated, and let's proceed from the current situation." In 1945, Japan signed a peace treaty with the USSR, according to which the Kuriles returned to Russia. It's funny how superficially the West studies this issue.

that's true but bear hunting in Russia is pretty rife, while they're protected in Japan. I wonder how much bear hunting there is in the Kurils
@AlexBeau9
@AlexBeau9 Жыл бұрын
@@cbrtdgh4210 bears only live on the two northernmost and two southernmost islands, so on the biggest ones. There's only three people on the islands who hunt bears for personal use and it's strictly regulated. It's not a mass industry like the Japanese whale killing. And poaching is a severe crime in Russia. Illegal mass hunting might be more prevalent on mainland Russia, in regions bordering China. But there are many guards and rangers fighting poachers. It's probably forbidden in Japan because there aren't many bears left there anymore.
@cbrtdgh4210
@cbrtdgh4210 Жыл бұрын
@@AlexBeau9 Japan has a lot of bears actually, can see it in nature documentaries. The Ainu actually used to eat the bears. Now you mention it I remember watching a documentary about a Russian dude protecting tigers in the far east.
