In this video of the series, we visit Stephanie Hafferty who has just moved to her new property and has set up her backyard kitchen garden in no time at all using no dig gardening methods. Stephanie has a huge wealth of knowledge and experience of no dig, and has managed numerous no dig gardens over her busy gardening career, not to mention she is also an author. Using minimal resources and pushing the limits with shallow layers of compost, it is amazing how quickly her lawn has turned into a thriving vegetable garden that is already yielding many harvests. I cannot wait to see how this garden matures over the next few growing seasons.
There are many ways to follow Stephanie, and she also runs many workshops and does talks too so the best way to get in touch is via her website: nodighome.com/

The videos and gardens are amazing. But even more, the pleasure and enthusiasm of the gardeners is such a joy to hear and watch.....so inspiring. Thank you for a peek into these calm and peaceful worlds, especially at a time when so much around us is in chaos .

@@stephaniehaffertyhomesteading I gardened with my dad, then not seriously again until my 40s, living in London, no garden. Now in Spain with some land. It might sound lame to some, but someone who is a professional gardener, telling you to just start small and not being too grandiose, is inspiring. Less perfect instagardens, more productive backgardens. I’ll enjoy following your progress 🌱❤️🌱

The people you have introduced us to are 'garden artists' and I appreciate your willingness to show us gardens that are totally different than your own. Each beautiful in their own way yet distinctively unique to each gardener. Stephanie definitely has a zest and passion for gardening as well as life in general. As always, Huw, thank you for your continued efforts to continue learning and for allowing us to follow along and learn. She has accomplished so much in 5 months, but she has beautiful dreams for what it will look like in the future. She has learned what so many of us old timers know, that if you don't try to instantly kill all of the pests on plants predators will show up and take care of them in their own time.

Thank you OhioGardener. Getting the balance between predator and prey is so important, and helps to make a garden look beautiful too. When I moved here in March 2021 I brought "weeds" from my old garden just because I knew they were the right food for the insects and other wildlife I wanted to attract here. The removal company said they'd never moved pots of weeds before!

Wise words Stephanie. When I started growing my own vegs and herbs I started small, and I have had to learn to back off from myself and the self imposed pressures to do more and more. I have now relaxed and if a crop fails I learn from it and I go buy this veg from a local producer. I am just more mindful about what I am doing, how I am doing it, and not wasting resources. If everyone just did one little thing, what they can the world would be in a slightly better place. However the one thing that I won't go back on is eating mass produced vegs from a supermarket, they don't taste 'right' anymore.

I recently retired after years in a very physical and stressful workplace and my shoulders and hands and knees just couldn’t cope with “extreme” gardening. Thank you Huw for this. I moved into my property at the beginning of 2020 and I've been wanting so bad to start a garden but I've had monetary, physical (pregnant) and mental impediments (recent death) and the failures took a toll on me. This year I'm hoping to do more and I'm excited to grow many things and unsure where to begin (I do have 3 no dig beds already built at least but full of dead grass) and this video is just the thing! I did shovel some of the dirt pregnant to make my beds but as I grew it was impossible to work them. Then with a newborn it was hard to do anything else and then my mother died and I gave up on life but seeing this video has helped me look back and be glad for the setbacks and my personal growth as I try to grow my garden. It has given me an outlook that I can start this year and soon I'll have rewards but not without some setbacks, and that's ok. I'll be sure to grow my mom's favorite squash, calabacita (which was also one of my first harvests in 2020) although the bugs here like it and I may lose it, but that's ok.

I love these snapshots of different gardener's spaces and practices, but this one really got me! In the first few years of a new space there is such a rush to finish it all, all right now, and you're failing if it's not all done right now. I love that Stephanie talks about the fact that her schedule makes it possible to get the work done and that most people don't have that. Hearing that quelled my anxious inner gardener and I'm really thankful I heard that message today!

Great to see Steph interviewed! Her knowledge is underrated and if you by her book you will see. I am vegan and the recipes are simple, adaptable, delicious and beautiful as well as all the natural skin and household cleaning recipes. Wines and vinegars and pickles. Sometimes watching all the permaculture and off grid videos a lot of people are doing it with a partner or friend or group. When it’s all your own blood sweat and tears and Hopes and dreams and wins it’s so much more joyful to share those moments… I love seeing Steph’s updates on Instagram as she parallels my own journey quite a lot as I’ve recently moved and do 99% of the works and decisions by myself (I’m a full time carer). Stephanie Hafferty I’ve been following your new garden since you moved so recognised it immediately. What a fab space you have created. Looking forward to seeing the fruit cages when they are done. I’m sorry but it really made me laugh ‘I will have more plants for other projects that I like, such as dying’ I knew you meant making dyes but it really made me chuckle. Huw fab camera work as ever!

Stephanie, I really appreciate what you said at 10:30. I have not ever heard the issue mentioned in a gardening video before, but having other places you have to be can be the biggest "garden pest" of all (haha). Thank you for the dose of reality. 😉

I'm a busy Mum and I was glad that you have the understanding that a busy Mum can not always have the perfect looking garden. Half my front yard is covered in cardboard with no compost or pretty flowers yet to grow on it. I should have finished compost by October so just cardboard front garden for now.

Loved watching this Stephanie. I would certainly love to chat about gardening if I was living in your neck of the woods, which I'm not. I have been moving towards growing food year round and will watch your channel for inspiration. I also have begun to add flowers amongst my edibles, so much prettier and nicer space to work in.

Really enjoyed this one and have subscribed to Stephanie's channel now as well Stephanie thank you for acknowledging that things AREN'T perfect. I work from home, but a pretty solid office-bound day with only a few short breaks to hustle outside and really get anything done on the days when the weather is good. Your garden is lovely and i wish you abundance and community in your new home! 🥂

Thank you for subscribing to my channel Celeste. It's tricky balancing work commitments with other life commitments and gardening. I worked away in July for 3 1/2 weeks (it was very exciting, I was creating a show garden) but it meant that I couldn't be here and the slugs ate all of my squashes and most of the winter brassicas!
