I finally got to make a video at the home of Manchester City, the Etihad Stadium.
I explored their old stadium location, Maine Road before making the short trip to the Etihad. They even kept the centre circle of Maine Road!
Man City played at Maine Road for 80 years but changed location in 2003. They then got a taken over by Sheikh Mansour and have been an unstoppable force in English football ever since. The likes of Aguero, Kompany & Silva come to mind but never forget Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee & Shaun Goater!

City wouldn't be where they are if it weren't for the take over. But the take over really was successful, not just investing in players but in a new stadium, new academy, one of the best in the world, some of the best coaches, so as a united fan I'm jealous you have owners who care about the success of your club, our owners just want to take money out of the club.

@JDS07
@JDS07 Жыл бұрын
@@indiekiddrugpatrol3117 yeah, about 5 years before, I assume they could only move there because 1 - I think the councils original plan was to redevelop the stadium after its main purpose, so could've been cheaper? Could be wrong though 2 - even to this day, City don't own their stadium. They lease it. So would've made it easier back then. I still wish they played in a redeveloped Maine Road now though, has a lot more character

@@JDS07 I think most people preferred maine road but let's be honest the area around it was a tip, you had to pay little shits to "watch" your car and at the time it was a no brainer to take a new stadium for free especially with how skint city were in the early 2000s

If we wouldn’t have saved you you would not exist. Also city were already the 10th most successful English club. They started rising in the 2000s until they got investment. Other clubs also spend money but aren’t as good as us, for a reason. We spend our money wisely and that’s what makes us a great and successful football club. We have developed tactics and a playstyle and we buy players that fit in. And yes the other clubs got their money from their fans but they don’t have as much succes now, which counts a lot. There are no excuses. These clubs would not be where they are now if they hadn’t gotten any money. Man city are not the only club spending, they are one of few clubs spending money well and using football knowledge to develop the best team possible and win. Just like they did in the 60s. Y’all are jelous
@jonahthrane812
@jonahthrane812 9 ай бұрын
@@Blinkers2007GameDev oh we absolutely are jealous, I even said it in the original comment. No non delusional fan would refute that. But your growth is still entirely inorganic and that's seen in spite of your rapid growth in success, fan attendance and global fans were lacking, and considering cities success, is still lacking. No one isn't saying city spends wisely. But city has also thrown knowledge at football knowledge. Instead of more organic growth and development, you bought the coach, bought coaches, bought scouts, etc, people only talk about player spending, city spends more than any other club on what goes on behind the scenes, and it's smart, don't get me wrong, but it's still inorganic, and unsustainable, as proven by all the ffp allegations.

Manchester City`s first game at Maine Road was an 80,000 full house NOT 58,000 the official figures are a joke. Film footage exists and the caption reads 80,000 and you can clearly see the ground is packed the cameras are there because the Lord Mayor of Manchester kicks the game off. They had regular attendances of 70-80,000 so much so that by the 1930s the grounds 4 corners were extended to give an 85,000 capacity which is why they had an official gate of 84,569 against Stoke in 1934. They also had 70,000 crowds as a second division club but since the war the capacity was continually cut and had a capacity of only 35,000 by the time they left.

@@justinreddan8502 Hilarious, you should go on the stage with that act. The official figure was 84,569 when the police ordered the gates to be locked with thousands outside. Most left but with 20mins to go the gates were opened and the stagglers were let in so that by full time they were an estimated 86,000+ in the ground. From then on the gates were opened with 20mins to go to let the kids and the unemployed hanging about outside in. By the way Stoke were averaging 15,000 at the time. Should have read stragglers.

God I miss my second home..Had my season ticket since 1987 and hadn't missed a home game in that time until coved struck.. Maine road was a proper shady ground to visit as an away fan especially for a midweek night fixture with all the alley ways around the terraced houses which surrounded the whole stadium and the ground being located in the heavily gang cultured area of moss side.. It certainly wasn't for the faint hearted as a rival fan to come and feel safe sadly.. The etihad is much more welcoming albeit that area of east Manchester was also run down badly before city moved stadiums and it was only after the sheik purchased city that he spent millions on regenerating the area whilst also using local contractors to complete the reconstruction and help generate many public facilities and a university to provide to the local community which in doing so also created a vast family friendly welcoming area of Manchester... As for football history city have helped united many times over the 2 clubs histories and when times were tough for most clubs before and immediately after ww2 it was city who helped united to complete fixtures due to uniteds financial issues and is why United are nickname the rags by city fans due to United being crippled with debt couldn't even afford new kits for their team thus city stepped in and provided united with a full second kit.. Along with the stadium ground share and several players being donated from city to united to fulfil fixtures after the Munich air disaster too was just 3 of the several more occasions that city bailed united out and without this help united may not even of existed today.. All this and city apparently have no history prior to 2008 lol.. City first won a trophy before any of the current so called top 6 in England and still hold the record for the highest home match day attendance in England outside of Wembley beating the second highest English club attendance which was for united ironically though was also achieved at Maine road not old Trafford.. My most memorable memory pre 2008 was In 1987 division 2 the championship as it's known now and was my first season as a ticket book holder without my dad and a league match against Huddersfield town which city won 10-1 with 3 city players all scoring a hatrick in front of just over 19k fans.. Football was at its lowest darkest days in that decade due to the English teams being banned from European football and the music rave scene starting up all over the uk was the catalyst for its decline and yet were some of my most memorable moments even eclipsing the heavy heights and total football that's often provided today.. Nice to be a fan of city that has suffered massively and then rose from the ashes and become the club it is today still gives me goosebumps but without the bad times I don't think I'd ever have the feeling I have now if I hadn't of known what it was like to lose every week and this ethos is what pretty much separates city fans from a lot of fans of the original top 4 clubs of Liverpool,united,arsenal and Everton who were the most dominant teams from when I started going to city games mid 70s till pretty much the last decade,, The fact that what your not familiar with as a football fan in losing games and playing poor all of a sudden if you don't know any different is hard to take and is noticeable from when I always listen to talk sport call ins etc.. if a Liverpool or united fan calls after a loss it's criticism generally where as if city lose a game this era most city fans who call up just take it with a pinch of salt as many will always be taught what city was before the take over especially if they were born post 2000.. City currently have around 40k season ticket holders of which Around 70% at city have renewed each season now for over 25 years or more.. This is the current record for the most fans of any English club that have held a season ticket and renewed consecutively now for over 2 decades.. These fans like me are all familiar with city's stagnant past and most take defeat gracefully,that's the big difference... Not too shabby for a fan base that apparently doesn't attend the Etihad stadium for games they've all paid for lol.. All city fans that have supported the club before 2008 are all too familiar with city's mediocre football and the decline of the great successful city era of the late 60s to mid 70s and then starved of a trophy for over 30 years from 1976 till 2011.. Sorry for the long comment but you did ask for some extra info for the video so i hope it helps somewhat.. Thanks for vlogging at city, I watch all your videos and it always delivers good material,great channel 💙👍

Thereafter it went kinda wotsits up - followed them home and away through the 80's - great times as at least the away days were mostly in West Yorkshire just over the hills. So what I am experiencing now is just part of the roller coaster ride. We are City we know there are no guarantee's just run with it whilst we have it and enjoy the memories when we have a dip - we are City so shouldn't bleat like the fans of other legacy clubs

The Polish team You've mentioned was Górnik Zabrze (pronounced 'goornick zapje' -ending like ' jelly') IT was 1971. Górnik is also iconic pl club. It's kind of Borussia Dortmund background, quite successful 50, 40 years ago. IT comes from minery region in southern Poland. They just don't have so much luck to investors;) I apreciate Your work, especially about Scottish football. You might want to do a story on Manchester Central Football Club, their history is really interesting history and their downfall is especially sad.... I doubt there have been many non-league teams that signed a current full international. Their history is also tied quite closely to Manchester City's as they kind of moved into the gap left by City's move to Maine Road in the 1920s. One small correction I should make is that City are actually from West Gorton, not Ardwick
@tanay3627
@tanay3627 2 жыл бұрын
There's one story about them that if they were allowed membership into the league then it would have been the end for Manchester United who were struggling with bankruptcy and financial disarray. City appealed to the FA and they prevented Central from joining the football league which saved United. United wouldn't even exist without City yet their fans have the audacity to say that we've got no history

So nice to see a non biased true football fans view on my club. One thing I did pick up on is you saying we have 20,000 less average attendance than the 58,000 at the opening of Maine Road, say what you want about our fan base but our averages are not 38,000 😂 such a great video though, thanks Sam!

Loved the post, mad to see the old centre spot, City fans alway loud and proud, lots of inflatables at matches, also remember they had a fanzine always for sale outside grounds home and away called King of the Kippax. Enjoyed it when they started beating Man Utd, but not really interested in them much now they've become a hollow money club.

Must be awsome to be one of the old City fans used to supporting an average sized club. If your very old you remember the 70s or something when they was a force, to then the grim years of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. Now they are the best club in the world. They will win their first CL this year. What a transformation! And ... probably the nicest club colours in England.

I’m one of them, I live in North Wales and Maine Road was the first football ground I ever went to when I was 7 years old, so it’s safe to say I missed out on the 70s success 😂 I’m 34 now and grew up supporting City through the 90s I have so many fond memories but also so many sad memories. Most of my friends were United or Liverpool supporters, mainly because they were winning at the time, but I wanted to be different. All I can say is all the heartbreak growing up was worth it, because now City are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and long may it continue 🤙⚽️💙

As part of the original pitch in the 90s for the Olympic Games bid for 2000 (which went to Sydney), the plan was that City were going to move the new stadium that would be built for that (may well of been a different design from the current Etihad). However, that fell through due to Sydney, and the Kippax was built at Maine Road. When a new bid was done for the Commonwealth the deal was back on to move to the new stadium (now the Etihad). Had Manchester not got the games, the plan would've been to replace the other three sides of Maine Road to match the Kippax. Still miss that ol' patchwork quilt of a ground. PS Best pre 2008 moment., Dickov 99. For me, best moment ever and better than "Agueroooo", simply due to the fact that if City didn't win that match, City would likely have been finished.
