Hi, my name is Emi. I'm born in raise in small town just outside Quebec City, this is where my lovely accent comes from. My #vanlife story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship once for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my belongings inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know where I would work, but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I would only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people consider this the lowest time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly, what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the savings that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving, and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I have been living full-time in my self convert van.

I’ve thought about all the people in the big houses lately and all the stuff they have. What do you do with the big house but pay for it , clean it, not really live in it . All we need is a place to sleep, to eat , to go to the bathroom. Your life style is so free . Sleep beside the ocean when ever you want. Xoxo

It’s so hard getting rid of stuff! Nobody wants to buy stuff anymore. So basically you just give it away. That’s pretty much what I’m doing. Giving a lot to a mission that helps people locally.

@HH-li5xl The majority of people is kind of aware of these facts, but they are under pressure of SHOWING OFF. Neighbor got a new car...the get one as well.. just abigger one. Co-worker moved into a brand new, bigger house... it will nag on their mind until they also go house shopping, even they know they most likely will have trouble paying the mortgage AND live a good life. You canct help those people. I never oriented myself on others, except they were decent, honest people who I shared my values with.

I spend a lot of time in my house, hardly ever leave. And that makes me happy. I used to go go go and I’m thankful I don’t anymore. I can breathe when I get home.

@@HarryMarsee-fw9otMore like something for your kids to clean out. Ugh. I was the only one of four to take on that responsibility. And I'm still cussing my mother's name and hoarding habit. No kids of my own, and I'm happy about it. I plan to keep simplifying and cutting back; leave very faint footprints and no guilty feelings on this world when I leave it.

I delivered pizza for a SUPER cheap company for many many years, and we always said that the worst tippers lived in the nicest houses... and they have money because they are SUPER CHEAP and do not tip at all.

Did I ever love the look on Miss Kitty's face at the beginning of the video! She looks so much like my cat, Gabby. I have found in my lifetime that the most honest people are those with little money. The ones with lots of money can be dishonest. Not all of them, but a lot of them.

A really good person will never tell about their money or show it. What's the old saying never tell your right hand what your left hand is doing. Emi, we love you because you are so real and honest. We love watching along all your travels good and bad. Watching you and kitty Kelly has taught me a lot. And we can't take the material items with us when we die & we all die.

I have a lot of people in the construction trades in my family and I actually worked in the trades for a while. Just a notice for all you licensed contractors out there no matter where you are if a client doesn’t pay you you can put a lien against their property.

I’ve worked for wealthy people too and your right some of them talk about money a lot and there are some who don’t. And some are very generous and don’t expect anything and others who give, hold it over your head, even if your earned It. And then there are those who have very little money and would give you there last buck. I prefer a person with a humble heart!

When lived in Vancouver about 25 years ago I worked as a secretary for a construction company. When I got my paycheck I noticed they paid me an hour less than what I worked every day. When I told the boss and the other employee there (female) their reply was, It's just how we do it here. I quit and I went to the law courts. No lawyer, I was 21, thick Québec accent, just myself and my word and I couldn't prove it. It was only $50 but I won, and they had to pay me that $50. The other employee had been there for 10 years. That's 25K she could have got, but she was afraid to get fired LOL. And that boss was creepy, trying to make passes etc (sex*ual harassment.) Always stand up for your rights!

Great video Emi, such awesome scenery! Thanks for taking us along. I think the people who don’t want to pay, a lot of times don’t have it. But people with money don’t worry about paying, their life continues on and they don’t worry about deadlines. If they are charged interest what is that to them, not like us, who don’t like to spend money foolishly. Your life is better than theirs. Nature is a lot more richness than they will ever have.

Unfortunately one of the ways some of “those people” make/keep their money is by being extremely tight with money no matter who they hurt. Not all of them. I’ve known a few wealthy people that you would not know they were wealthy. They lived well under their means, didn’t wear fancy clothes, treated everyone well. But I fear they are the exception.

My Aunt and Uncle were very well off. No one would have known it watching them live and raise their family in a small old farmhouse, working their land and cattle with help only at harvest time. No better clothes, farm equipment or car than anyone else in their small farming community. Just good, hardworking folks. I so miss spending time on the farm.

When I was a kid I climbed those N. Van hills when they were wild. Sure looks different now. We weren't rich and nowadays my mother cannot afford to live there... Everybody has to come along and fence off their own patch, don't they? Here's to you, Kelly and the van! and yeah if I were barefoot in the snow I would need to pee right away too, hahaha.

I always loved the tall hedges in Vancouver because to me the nature surrounding the home is nicer than any mansion, especially when the are flowering hedges like azaleas, rhododendrons or lilacs. I imagine some wealthy people want privacy around their property and the hedges cut down on the sound of the traffic, whi.e others are trying to hide how affluent their place is so they won't get robbed. Though it's true that many wealthy people are greedy and not so nice like anyone else others are thoughtful, kind and generous except in lower numbers. In Cornwall ON , the the snow is all gone except in parking lots and a tiny bit here and there in heavily shaded spots, non in the bush at all.

You can visit Washington and Oregon, just to stay close to Vancouver area (four to six hours drive away from home base) until you are comfortable about going the distance for warmer weather, more south. I hope spring IS around the corner soon!

11:11 The tree is probably a Native American tree marker. They used to bend trees into those shapes to mark commonly used areas. Probably because it's near water it was spent like that as a marker.

I remember getting stiffed on accounting work I did for a North Van business owner. I was very disappointed he screwed me on my last cheque. Even though he had more than enough to pay the bill. Years later when I became a mortgage broker I saw his file come through the fax at my office. It took every last bit of conscious for me not to shove his paperwork through the shredder. He was dealing with a different broker so it would’ve been a disservice to the other broker so I didn’t.

Also, I had an uncle who was a multi-millionaire and one day, me and my dad were in a tight crunch. We asked to borrow $5,000 and repay in 3 months with interest. Answer was no. A friend who was not rich, 2 kids, recently moved to Québec and was working super hard at building his butcher business, loaned us $7,000 and did not accept a cent of interest. Sadly, there are people that are self absorbed, they don't realize that there is empathy and honesty. They are consumed by the money and forget how to be a real human. Big house, money but no heart...... Love your video as always, hugs to you and your furbaby❤

Great video. I like that you talked about your work on rich homes. I understand as my ex and I painted for years on big homes. Some of the cheapest people are loaded. We did meet about it wonderful people on central vancouver Island though. Many who've moved from other places.

Have a beautiful week always nice to catch up to your videos. I used to clean houses like those. Some of the worst contracts I've ever had, beyond filthy dirty and I would often have to run for my money, even since would argue the job I had done. I took pride in my work and would put more hours where needed and not charge extra. I've learn to not do more but it was difficult as it comes to me naturally to reach my standards. You said it well some people have the big houses but not the budget or resources. Much love 😘😘

That area is The British Properties. Pretty houses, great views but if you can’t enjoy it all the time why bother? The tree was a nursery tree, it fell and started to decay and the other trees grew out of it. Pretty cool eh?
