After decades as an opposition figure, in November 2022 Anwar Ibrahim became Malaysia’s prime minister.
His appointment comes after a turbulent election, which saw an unprecedented hung parliament, large gains by a conservative Muslim party and heightened racial tensions.
The election exposed Malaysia’s deepening fault lines, notably an electorate polarised between factions that support multiculturalism and religious conservatism.
Anwar now faces the uphill task of delivering on long-pledged reforms, while reconciling the nation and maintaining political stability.
101 East joins Anwar Ibrahim as he navigates his first six months in power and examines the challenges that lie ahead for him and Malaysia.

Agreed. I'm so damn tired of the politicization of race and religion in Malaysia. Because to me, the more those things are being politicised, the more it divides us. The solution to this issue is simple. Just respect each other. That's it. No need to blow it out of proportion. I believe our politics should instead focus on economy, development of the nation and human development. Those should be the basics of our politics. Race and religion should not be the basics of our politics AT ALL. It's just gonna make things worse.

In Malaysia's democratic secular race-based politics, Anwar of all people knows that if he fails to deliver, he and his coalition will perish along with the 'One Malaysia' reform the country so desperately needs. That will surely pave the way for more racist and religious politics and instability, none of which will attract international capital and investment. Malaysia is at a crossroad and young Malaysians are desperate to move onward and upward, not backward.

As an independent observer 2 things i noticed in this video that stand out to me: 1. The PAS fella said he wants MY to be a Muslim state under sharia law but later he said he wants to have two parallel systems,i.e. civil and sharia. He is contradicting himself. 2. The 2 boys who were talking about being tired of reformasi message from anwar because their town has been flooding even though there is a message of reformasi for years. Anwar has been talking about it for years but he has only been in power for about a year. Reforms take time to implement, no? If the youth are not willing to give a new government chance to implement changes after decades of corrupt rule by UMNO than they are not being fair. The people to blame for things that happened so far is not the current but the past government. Success of MY is important to us in rest of SEA. I hope the youth will give the current government chance to prove themselves.

It is not a matter whether PM Anwar can unite a divisive Malaysia. It is a matter for all Malaysians to decide whether they want to achieve a Malaysia for Malaysians. If the people do not give full support to him, then it is an uphill task for him to fight alone against the opportunists. If one really subscribe to the notion of a Malaysia for Malaysians, then the people must move with him in that direction.

I can't help but see the similarities of PM Anwar and Presdent Marcos Jr of the Philippines. Both ran on a platform of unity. These two men are just so tired of the political divide, esp from their personal experiences and just want to work for the betterment of their country. You can clearly see that they are genuine and their heart is in the right place but a giant mountain is now in front of them and only time will tell who will conquer who

Malaysian politics has always been about race and religion despite being a multi racial country . There will always be a group of people who think that their rights will be taken away due to information fed to them that will make them fearful. I believe Anwar is one politician who will not use the race bait at this point of time . His unity government has the ability to unite the country . The threat of disunity will always be there because that is the core of a lot of political parties as well as race based NGOs. But I believe that we are now led by someone with a global vision who has the sensitivity and ability to bring the country to greater heights. Young politicians such as Syed Sadiq are also should play a vital part in the political landscape .

That last interview with those two first-time voters (presumably in Permatang Pauh) where they said that the slogan "reformasi" has little significance to people like them whose homes are still being inundated by flooding until now, when they as students are having to struggle with the rising cost of living and other issues affecting ordinary citizens - the rakyat Marhean, on the ground. Quite frankly, I never quite understood what the reformasi (reforms) were all about, which the Reformasi movement initiated by Anwar Ibrahim in September 1998, after he had been sacked as Deputy Prime Minister was yelling about all these years. However, a Wikipedia entry on the Reformasi movement says - " The movement, which began while the country hosted the Commonwealth Games, initially demanded the resignation of Malaysia's then-Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, and for the end of alleged corruption and cronyism within the Barisan Nasional-led (BN) government. It later became a reformist movement demanding social equality and social justice in Malaysia." Yes, these are the issues which have dominated especially opposition (anti-BN) Malaysian politics since 1998 but they are rather macro-level issues such as corruption, cronyism, nepotism, kleptocracy, transparency, accountability, competency and so forth, which are great to talk about in media articles, on social media, over teh tarik, pricey latttes or beers, but which do not address real-world issues such as high cost of living, cost of rentals and property prices beyond the reach especially of young adults, inflation, unemployment, under-employment, persistent flash flooding and so forth. Now like Penang which has been ruled by a Pakatan Harapan state government for 15 years now, my state Selangor has also been ruled by a Pakatan Harapan state government for 15 years and they have not solved the problem of flash flooding, such as the serious flooding of Taman Sri Muda in Shah Alam, parts of Klang and other parts of the Klang Valley in December 2021. Besides that, me and my fellow Petaling Jaya constituents who voted for Pakatan Harapan have other ground-level issues with the Pakatan Harapan state government. Thus it is no surprise that these two first-time voters you interviewed, voted for the Perikatan Nasional / PAS candidate in Permatang Pauh. However, whether a Perikatan Nasional government can effectively address the above immediate ground-level issues is left to be seen. Meanwhile, I feel that Anwar's reply to your last question about addressing the ground-level concerns of voters such as these two young men was rather lame and waffled.

Yes that's correct. Firstly Al Jazeera media coverage this time especially regarding Muslim countries non Arab appear to be more fair than usual.Usually it's like another copy of western prejudised media like CNN and BBC w more fairness and true reporting on the Arab site since Qatar based more democratic and go for truththan other govt media controlled by tyrants in the Middle east. Secondly as said true Selangor and Penang PH controlled w all talk on reforms w or not w Snwar as PM seemed hollow w usual ceaseless 9f tslk to eradicate corruption nepotism ras cism etc as PH more Chinese Indians biased and religion Buddha Hindu Christian no matter how much denied and corruption worst as giver of bribes dldince decades are the very sponsors of DAP PH billionaires w billions rasuah to bribe small Malay govt officers or individuals or politicians for land companies shares as well as in industries agriculture etc. Yes so much harping to control floods in PAS opposition states now Kelantan Trengganu Kedah and clean water and infrastructure etc.The same can be said of PH dominated states Penang Selangor NSembilan despite abundance of wealth of sponsors people and state . Yes inshallah w PN PAS must dominated by PAS heading cabinet and enforcement of rule state federal these issues can be solved effectively by no corruption at any level and other problems social crime as real crimes w Shariah laws that is Just for both Muslims and non Muslims. Before states under PAS controlled cannot do much as money funding diverted to Selangor Perak Johor Penang other states although Krlantan Trengganu are rich w petrol and gas and now Kedah as rice bowl and other products. For both Muslims and non Muslims there should even more peace prosperity as basic rights are given to all amenities to housing food health education work study opportunities with more for Malay Muslims as main ethnic of country controlling govt economy and all and Islam as main religion. Theres more justice and fairness compared to US UK Europe do called democracies or socialism of India China across the globe. No one can find an utopia w exact equality even with own race or within the same religion color or creed except as Muslims nor good rights and protection as non Muslims in Muslim dominated countries both Arab and non Arab worldwide. Concrete historical facts from time of Prophet RSAW and Islam since 6th C to end of time testify to that as indeed Islam and its governance is fair and Just to entire mankind regardless of nationalities color race or religion.

What pn can offer exactly when they take over penang and selangor? Negeri negeri yg diorang in power sekarang pun porak peranda. Nak berbual pasal banjir ni, banjir kat kelantan tu dah jadi acara tahunan dah. Dekat selangor and penang kita boleh salahkan pembangunan tak terancang, tapi kelantan dan terengganu? And the "reformasi", we just need to educate people about corruption or else yg miskin bertambah miskin, yg kaya bertambah kaya. Bayangkan la zahid yg ada kes songlap berjuta pun boleh menang pilihanraya.

Well if he follows the footsteps of the race based political parties like UMNO, Bersatu and PAS who only defend Malays bumiputera rights, he will definitely gain the majority of Malays support. Then, if he does so, how do you expect him to lead this multi racial nation and unite this nation if he is only focussing on defending the majority's rights.

@@myrakalim I think it's obvious from the last election malay votes are split almost evenly 30% across the 3 malay parties, moving forward parties need to get support from other races to win an election. So I believe this is a step in the right direction.

The way I see it as a citizen, we are pretty much a country, but we are never a nation. It had been this way for so long as I could remember. The Penisular with its West Coast state & the East Coast state, with its progressiveness & conservativeness brand. And the Borneo "state" of Malaysia of Sabah & Sarawak, with its own way of doing things. We could never be heading straight if everyone is driving to a different direction. It is so difficult to convince "everyone" headed forward with so many interest at stake. The Politicians will try their best to "divide & rule" because that will keep them in power. A "united" country will see "them" not relevant to the People.

He is the game changer man who will bridging between the Malays/Muslims with the other minorities despite differences in ideology but with grand formula finally we meet a meeting point that from there Malaysians all together moving forward and prosper with respecting of all differences. The key here is communication and understanding. Started with right education. Let say English Arabic and Mandarin is a MUST for All Malaysian other than Bahasa Malay itself. Yes. Accept it and unite or give up and go!
