They were before the communist anti white government forced them to feel there ranks with blacks and had to restructure the training so they could do it. But from the 60's through 90's there commandos were insanely talented and we're some of the bravest men on earth. There special forces were created by British SAS and they done there heritage proud. They never had the technological power but they made up for it in masterful unconditional warfare skills. Most haven't a clue about these men. They think of navy seals but these men are in my opinion as good as it gets when it come to special warranted operators. Like I said they ate masters at the fundamental skills of Cqb and that's what they focus on. They get way more time behind the trigger during training and are amazing Bush men too

I was at 32 Battalion - Buffalo, in 1979. Even though Johan came a little after the war against the Russians and Cubans in Angola, he certainly still carries the spirit and courage of the "ou manne". His conduct and experience in Afghanistan goes on to make us proud. Johan is a true recce and more, bold, brave articulate, astute and insightful. A true South African hero. A man specifically, that Field Marshal Montgomery might have had in mind when he wrote about South African Boere.

I served in the SA Army from 1988 - 1990 in Northern Namibia and spent time with the Koevoet and 101 guys. We met a few Recce teams when they passed through from time to time. The Recces and other special forces were known to be carefully selected and having had attended carefully thought out, brutally intense physical and psychological training. Johan seems remarkably well adjusted considering all the engagements he must have see/overseen in his days. No Recces were short of grey matter and Johan's sharp wittedness comes through in this candid account of his experience in conventional, covert and clandestine warfare. His assessments of Africa's needs seem well considered too and strategies I mostly agree with as well. These guys will always have work.

Hy vertel jou die waarheid - dit is 'n wyse man.

Julle dink "tribalism" is agterlik.

Worked with Maj Dave Drew from the USA who passed away. Thanks for your book " A breed apart" something to remind me of my time at 1 RECCE. During my selection course I was the only one left after we started with a group of 37. I then then had to join another group to do all the courses to eventually become operational.

No one took them up on the offer, which is hardly surprising, considering we were still shell shocked at being ripped from Civvie life and had only left school 4 weeks before at the age of 17 or 18. A few guys tried out for Bats and a couple made it and off they went to Bloem. The recces were disbanded in '94. The ANC were terrified they'd be used against them. Fair point at the start of the book which General Montgomery said, however a German general named Erwin Rommel stated in his dairy after trying to conquer the city of Tobruk from the allies. "If I had to take hell, I would use the Australians to take it and the New Zealanders to hold it." Not trying to shine a spot light, but thats a much bigger saying

You are trying to put the spotlight on it otherwise why would you say it. Considering Tobruk was made up of various armies mainly Aussies and the brits suppied them and eventually relieved them so why this comment?

@@toast2610 Maybe, but the likes of Mugabe and Nelson Mandela were part of an organisation that did acts that would be considered terrorism by definition. They are in power and connected to others in power, therefore, they get to write the history books and portray themselves as heroes and I don't see in the foreseeable future that changing and over time people won't really care what happened unless it serves an agenda. On the question of language. Afrikaners have English as a second language and it was not loved. (In 1937 it was nearly NP policy to stop English as official language. - English is the language of the conqueror. Same as you have today with the ANC in control - they don't like Afrikaans. The consequence that Afrikaans is dropped as a language of the Court, the Police, Universities and the State... ) Afrikaners of your and mine, our Fathers and our Great fathers generations used English out of necessity. I am refer to the book of journalist Chris Louw, "BOETMAN en die swanesang van die verligtes", H&R-Uitg., Kaapstad, 2001, Chris was also Recci-like soldier. The min. nr of words to communicate in a language is about 1000. Native English speaker (US, UK, NZ & Aussie) will use 3 000 and more words. And form that a non-English speaking ppl will understand us better. (We use less words.) Ich und dich leren aber Franzosisch. "Apprendre le Francais." The South African Economy is derogating and Afrikaans speaking Whites will have to change. Change their language or change their ethnicity or just leaf... Meci Beaucoup.

I've read a shitload of books about sf guys and I've read in one of them that the South African Recce selection is hands down the hardest. It could be bullshit, because every one of the books is subjective, but I found it interesting. I'm guessing the SA Recces are a very small SF unit. There's not much available info about them.
